Six Characters in Search of an Author
This 1921 intellectual comedy contrasts illusion with reality by introducing 6 individuals to a bare stage occupied by actors in rehearsal. Proclaiming themselves the incomplete creations of an author's imagination, the 6 demand dialog for the story of their lives. A classic dramatic exploration of the many faces of reality.

These characters are looking for an author to finish their drama, which they say is unfinished. Through the telling of their story they convince the director to be their author. SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR. (1921). Luigi Pirandello. ****.
If you read any of the short biographies of Pirandello on the web, you will get an idea of where the plots of some of his plays originated. This play is probably his most popular one, and relatively accessible for the reader. Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was born in Sicily in the town now called Agrigento. We have visited there, and were impressed by all of the buildings still standing and in good shape dating from the Greek...more

Oh, this play is great. What a fucking thing it is. It's about how we create our own realities: how each of us choose to play a character, to such an extent that we sometimes sit outside ourselves, watching our characters act out their scenes. And it's about the subjective nature of reality: how to each of us, the scenes we live through may be be completely different to each actor in them.

The play, by Luigi Pirandello, was first performed in Rome in 1921. It opens with an acting company preparing to rehearse a play. As the actors prepare themselves for the rehearsal they are interrupted by the arrival of six strange people. The Manager of the play, annoyed by the interruption, demands an explanation. The Father reveals himself and his family as unfinished characters in search of an author to complete their story. The Manager initially believes them to be mad, but as they argue am...more
This is by far THE best play I have ever read (not that I have read too many to compare it with, but I did plow through a dozen of classical plays -mainly initially written and performed in French- in high school and I still remember, very vividly, how boring and barely engaging they were).
This play is relatively fast and short; the style is not flowery, either. However, despite its fast paced style and succinctness, it is guaranteed to keep the readers cogitating while, and after, reading it....more

Six Characters in Search of an Author is an interesting exploration into the idea that characters in a work of fiction have some kind of Platonic form that is only imitated or hinted at when actors perform a theatrical work. In some ways it's a deconstruction of a play in that it's more about the writing and performing of a play than it is a play in itself. In the play, six characters from a play that never got written come to visit a theatrical troupe and try to convince the troupe to perform t...more

A play that asks the question where does the author end and the character start, and where does the character end and the actor start. This opens up so many philosophical questions about literature and entertainment and life. A masterpiece of theatre and literature. Any writer should have a well worn copy of this on their shelf, refering to it simply as "the bible."

I read this play for my English class and I find it catching only it one aspect: it played with my brains quite well. I liked how Pirandello uses the element of a play within the play to represent the conflict between "make-believe" and "reality." The piece conveys the message that the art of theather cannot be fully trusted as it depicts a world of make-believe that tries to imitate reality but actually fails to do so; yet, Pirandello deliveres his moral through the world of theather, mocking t...more

This book was literally amazing. I was drowned into awesomeness every page. Every word the characters said were intelligent, but in some ways a little bit bizarre. You do not meet every day Characters who escaped of a book, but not only escape, their author set them free. The characters were looking for an author, but they may never find him. They are their own author, they are creating their own life stories. They are damned to repeat their story every day, for an eternity, waiting for an autho...more

While I imagine that this play probably scandalized a 1920s audience, I wasn't that impressed. I think it was probably really innovative and metadramatic for its time, but the gimmick doesn't completely make the entertainment for me. While I was reading it, I couldn't stop thinking about that Jeff Daniels movie, The Purple Rose of Cairo, where a movie character comes out of the screen, interacts with the 'real world,' and literally meets the actor that portrayed him. I think the film might have...more

Not the most profound play i've ever read. I think it has a lot to say about theatre and the philosophy of creating a character, the permanence of art, the authorship of a play (how much belongs to the author, how much is due to the actors etc) but i don't think it had much to say about broader topics like life, human nature etc.
It seemed like a silly post-modern exercise in deconstructing an art form; A play that looks inwards at the language of plays, but has nothing to offer outside of that....more

But for the random, Chekhovian ending, a clever metaplay. Six characters show up at a rehearsal for a different, fictional Pirandello play ("The Game As He Played It," the title of which refers to this play we're watching, since, as one of the characters says, "acting is a game"). The characters demand that since their story is worth telling, worth putting on stage, the director ought to stage it. The characters and the actors quarrel over how to do so, the characters preferring accuracy, faithf...more

Extraordinariamente creativo.

In this play there is a group of actors rehearsing for a play when suddenly six characters enter the scene and demand for someone who completes their reality because their author has stopped creating their lives. This play explores the different aspects of reality, past, present and future, and has very interesting reflections on how do we accept certain aspects of our lives and take those for granted, whereas almost nothing can be taken for granted. I loved it.
"Six Characters" is a pivotal text in modernist studies, as well as theatre arts. But saying that does not communicate nearly enough the dynamism and brilliance of this text. Taking it apart on the levels of action, theme, and philosophy makes one's mind bubble with new insights into theatrical conventions, but what's more, the work forces you to ask yourself questions about issues of living, being, and essence. In addition to being a joyous read, it is wonderful to teach in a variety of context...more
I had to read this for a college course in modern drama that had a rather intensive reading routine and this play is one that stuck with me - a nice surprise in what was a collection that had some plays I had to slog through. Read exceptionally well and from what I remember a rather accessible language - and the whole concept I found, well, rather awesome. I kept the book and will read it again. Worthy of study and enjoyment.
I quite enjoyed this play, once I worked out who all of the characters were and what they were doing. It was quite strange to wrap your head around the concept of a play about actors performing a play. There wasn't much connection between the audience and the characters, but that's kind of expected because the play's about the actor's connections to the characters and fiction/reality boundaries. Overall I quite enjoyed studying it.
