As a huge fan of Skins, the television series I was thrilled to recieve this book off my mum for Christmas. (although I did hope that she hadn't read any of it as even the blurb would raise the eyebrows of a few parents)It is bascially everything that happened in the gap between series 3 and 4 and as I am a teenager who sits at home staring at the cat until the new series of skins starts this novel was a God send. It was like I was watching series 3.5 or something, if you watch series 3 and then...more

Skins: The Novel is the first book to be released based on the popular E4/Channel 4 programme, Skins. Based in Bristol, the book takes off from Series 3 of the tv series, and tells the story of the summer that passes in-between Series 3, and Series 4 (currently airing on E4 on Thursday nights at 10pm).
The book was written by Ali Cronin, a freelance writer from the UK, and captures the characters brilliantly. It feels exactly like watching the programme. The characters sound right in your head. Y...more

I have a love/hate relationship with Skins. It seems to start really well and then have an epic fail towards the end of each season. The book is between season 3 and 4. I'm not sure if you'd enjoy this book if you haven't seen skins because it assumes you know all the characters and what they are like and what's happened to them in the past. Each chapter is told from a different characters point of view and this is something the book has got spot on. When it says at the top that it's Cook's poin...more
So first off, I love Skins. I love it like I've never loved a TV series before. It's just, in one word, amazing. And this book does the opening to series 4 alot of justice. Series 4 has started, and I'd seen the first three episodes before reading this book in just under a week, so it's been fascinating to read up on what went down in Italy and France with Katie, Emily and Effy out and about. Katie as a character has really spoken to me through the novel, which was a great introduction to the la...more
Skins UK (Sorry I have to specify, because well I like it better than US), is one of my favorite tv show. This booked was released one or two years ago, I was devastated because I can't find a copy in any bookstore here in the Philippines. Just this year, Fullybooked was on sale so I went, while looking through books, I found this. And to be honest, I was shock and at the same time happy.

Rating: 2 1/2, Reason: Boring and too much swearing from Effie. I don't mind swearing in books, I've got a dirty mouth myself, but it was unnecessary in a big chunk in the book. Effie was saying f this, f that, when it didn't even warrant it. Plus, she was just plain annoying and whiny. I know it says R18, therefore I shouldn't have read it, but in saying it was R18 I thought it would be at least interesting. Nope, BORING! Yeah, there was a few funny moments, but that was like 5% of the book and...more
I really love the Skins series and I was amazed by what I've found on a bookstore! Skins. The novel. So I immediately bought it even though the cover is a little turn off.
Its nice that Skins have this untold stories stated at this book that made me understand more regarding the flow of the story. It is also nice because I can understand more the characters and what are the things they are thinking.
But the thing is, Skins the novel is like written in a TV series way, that if this is an episode, I...more

I have to admit, that I absolutely love Skins. There is something about it's rawness that makes it so captivating and I thought that Ali Cronin did a very good job at capturing that characters voices, it really did seem like we were inside their heads. But I do have a bit of a problem with the story line, it seems like the whole book was too wrapped up in sex, everything was about sex. Even Naomi and Emily's relationship which I always found to be very loving seemed to completely evolve around i...more

This novel was one of the first books that I willingly read in English. I think it wasn't the best choice because of the tons of slang expressions that were used in it. Of course it had to be like that, but this was not the only thing that made me feel a bit disappointed. The truth is, I expected something more of the story, maybe some background knowledge about the characters or some sort of development in their life but it didn't happened; not the way I expected.

I just finished Skins (Skins #1) by Ali Cronin. It's a novel based on the TV series of seasons three and four. It follows the gang of eight friends in the UK. It's teen angst at it's best.
It's not necessary to see the show to enjoy the novel. But I highly recommend seeing the TV show too. It's my favorite cast of characters. There's Freddy (the more level headed one), Cook (the crazy one), JJ (the smart one with mental issues), Emily and Naomi (the gay couple), Katie (Emily's twin sister with a...more

A big disappointment, the series was so MUCH better (I love the telly programme). This story (what there was) really went nowhere. It had some amusing parts, but they were few and far between. Plus, the use of the f word was monotonous, and this is coming from ME! Not someone that has a problem with swearing in books, but really, it was extremely overused and in areas where it really wasn't necessary. It's like, "Do you want some story with those swearwords?" Because you pretty much didn't get i...more
So it's a little embarrassing that I've read this book, but I am totally obsessed with the show so I guess it makes sense. I thought the book did a pretty good job of capturing the voices of the characters, although I don't know if this book was really necessary as a precursor to the 4th season/series, because not a lot happens. I did enjoy this as a companion, but let's be honest I would rather watch these characters and listen to the awesome soundtrack than read about them.
At the time of watching the series, I wasn't aware of this books presence, but then when purchasing Summer Holiday, this came up in the related titles, so I got it as well, deciding to read it first as it was the season that came first. And I have to say that on the whole, I enjoyed the book. It's a nice segway between season 3 and 4, and the characters voices could be clearly heard. I liked that even though it was in first person, even the grammar used by characters, Pandora especially, fitted...more
OH MY FUCKING GOD. SOOO... I was in FullyBooked a while ago, then I heard this girl freakin' out "OHMIGOSH" because of the book she found. She was like "OMG. Can't believe I found it!"... so when she was about to pay for the book, I had a glimpse of it and I saw the effin' face of Effy, Freddie and Cook of SKINS.
Unfortunately, there are no stocks left. BUT.. BUT... FUUUCK. SKINS is one of the most amazing shows ever created. EVER.

A nice quick, fun read. I read it in a day. It would have been in one sitting had it not been for the fact that I was on the bus.
The reason it's a 4 star. The language. I know it's Skins and the language is to be expected but I'm not a big fan of swearing. Also Effy's sections didn't seem to tally much with her screen persona. In the Skins series she doesn't talk much and when she does she's usually quite dreamy. This didn't really come across in the book, in fact her sections were often quite l...more

I fell in love with the skins TV series and I wouldn't miss an episode unless it was an emergency, so I wasn't sure if the book could live up to my expectations. In some ways I loved the book, and could imagine the characters as i read about them, but in others it just wasn't the same. I think i just enjoyed the book because it was a nice way to fill the gap between series 3 ending and 4 beginning, and i went to London to meet the cast and get it signed!!
Books based on TV shows/movies are usually boring, corny and completely irelvant to the thing its based on. The only reason I read this was because I'm so obbsessed with skins that I can't get enough of it. So, I did not have massive expectations for skins: the novel, but it was actually pretty good. The diologe was well done. The characters were alot like they were in the series with the exception of Effy, but she was close enough. This was no master piece, but it was a nice quick read and I ha...more
Based on the summer between season 3 and 4, we catch up with all the characters, what and who they did ;)
Set just the the TV series each chapter is titled by the name of the subject character. I found the writing for each character spot on, I had a few giggles and gasps along the way. Definitely a light read for any Skins Gen 2 fan. Oh and there is a bonus of some really nice glossy photos of everyone.

This novel managed to get the voices of the characters pretty spot on, but as for the rest of it, for me it didn't really fit the feel of the show. It was almost as if the writer decided that making it all about sex and mentioning drugs a lot was all that Skins was about. To me it felt pretty lacking in any depth. Then again, it's pretty rare to expect anything that great from most TV tie-in novels.
The novel was everything I expected it to be.
Having a dysfunctional life myself, I found myself relating to most of the characters.
I loved Effy here. Effy is, well, Effy. Perfectly imperfect. Beautiful.
The course of their lives in the novel is enchanting in a messed up teenage way. The secrets and the lies and the hurt and the sexuality and sex itself. All of these mixed with anger and love and passion. Everything in a novel. I loved it! Going to look out for another one of these babies soon.

I made the mistake of picking this as my "I'm-going-to-be-in-the-bathtub-for-four-hours-and-read-an-entire-book-while-I'm-in-there" choice. It wasn't until I was submerged in bubbles that I realized this was teen fiction allegedly based on a television show? I don't know but I read the fucker anyway. I really need to lay off the crack before I check shit out of the library.
Seriously, this is what they put out after that great series? I didn't even finish this it was so boring. R18, you've got to be joking. Just because it's got swearwords and some lame sex scenes doesn't make it R18. I'm not going to say anymore, because I wasted my money, so it doesn't deserve a real review.

I loved this season of Skins on TV,so bought this supplement, which looks into what they did in the Summer inbetween the 2 series. I adore Cook, the loveable rogue. The finale with him is a favourite bit of mine.
