Blood Price (Victoria Nelson #1)
by
Tanya Huff
Vicky Nelson is a private investigator. She used to be one heck of a murder detective for the Toronto police, but deteriorating eyesight and her stubborn-ness led her to leave her true calling.
A killer is stalking Toronto and the first victim's girlfriend hired Vicky to find the killer, since she doesn't believe the police are looking in the right places. Vicky's ex-partne

I'm all for amazons. There really aren't that many of them in literature. What? Homer kills the queen and its no longer cool to be one? We get Wonder Woman in the forties, but how many others? And Victoria Nelson isn't really an amazon, not in the traditional sense, but she is a 5'10" female warrior (excuse me, private investigator) and the only thing she's missing from the stereotype is that she's got both breasts.

Before Anita Blake, before Buffy, before there was a genre called “urban fantasy,” Tanya Huff introduced readers to P.I. Vicki Nelson and her vampire sidekick Henry Fitzroy in the novel Blood Price, the first book in Huff’s popular Blood series. I can now see why these books, which are today considered urban fantasy classics, have become so influential. I ordered the books after watching the television series they inspired. I must say, Vicki is a strong, admirable character. She's openly flawed, which is refreshing. She's witty and a bit of a ball-buster. I can really identify with her need to put up an emotional wall as well as her commitment issues. They're a testament to 21st century women.

Another winner in the "Blood Book" series! For the first time I wasn't a bit bored by werewolves as the main plot of a novel. It seems in every novel I have read with weres the plot seems to bog down for some reason. Odd, because you would think this could be an interesting and creative subject to explore. But most of the novels I have read like this seem to bog down in a dry presentation of pack dynamics. Not so with this one! Somehow Tuff managed to keep my interest throughout the entire novel...more

I don't really know what to say about this book. I've been watching the television series based on this book series that ran on Lifetime, and I have to say that the book is better. That's not saying a lot though. The plot is straightforward enough. A demon threatens life as we know it and private investigator, Vicki "Victory" Nelson, gets sucked into solving the case. Along the way she tries to enlist the help of Mike Celucci, her former partner on the police force (she had to resign due to visi...more
This is actually a reread for me. I’d read the first three in the series and never finished it. I think the series may not have been fully published by then and that’s why I didn’t finish because I really enjoyed the first three books. Recently, I saw on Netflix that they’d made the books into a television series. I put the DVDs in my queue, but I decided that I wanted to finally read the full series first. I purchased the volumes that I didn’t own yet and am set to read them all.

Allora, cosa dire...l'ho trovato molto corposo (posso dire così?!).

Review of Blood Price by Tanya Huff
This novel is the first in the successful series by Tanya Huff featuring her female PI, Vicki Nelson, one of the earlier urban fantasy/horror offerings that helped to popularise the hordes of vampires and demons stalking our streets.
It began with blood and death. And Vicki Nelson, PI was at the scene. The victim had been brutally, inhumanly opened up. Messy work. She’d had to cover the corpose with her coat. It had sort of made her feel involved.

Vicky è una donna orgogliosa e impulsiva, forte...more

Based on a recommendation from Itunes, I downloaded this TV series and loved it. I had never heard of it, but looked it up after seeing the "based on the books by Tanya Huff" note in the credits. And was both surprised and disappointed to find it wasn't on kindle.
however, I did find "The Enchantment Emporium" on kindle, and have been staring fixedly at Tanya Huff's amazon page since about the minute I finished it, waiting for either a sequel or the blood books.

Victory Nelson, a former homicide officer turned private investigator, stumbles upon a grisly ... scene where the victim appears to have been ravaged by a vampire. She quickly finds herself deeply entangled in the case when the victim's girlfriend hires her to investigate the vampire lead after the Police refuse to believe vampires exist.

Written in 1991, somehow Tanya Huff's books have fallen through my reading net. I had no expectations, but was really surprised how well the character's Henry, Mike, & Vicki are crafted, not to mention the supporting character's too, all individual all play in your head like a cinematic film.
Vicky's character is real & in someways sad, her relationship with Mike is truly vitrolic at times, but you can sense deep love & companionship below the adversarial frustration, neither wanting...more

This book is almost 20 years old - the first of one of the early urban fantasy series. It was good, but I had a really hard time with how dated it felt. A major component of the plot had to do with not being able to reach people who weren't at home. The lack of cell phones and PDAs made it seem dated to me, not contemporary, and I prefer contemporary urban fantasy. BUT I think there's a good chance that this series has kept going for the last 20 years (need to look it up), so it could have evolv...more

This is the first book in a series concerning Vicki Nelson, private investigator, and Henry Fitzroy, a five hundred year old vampire and illegitimate son of Henry VIII. So far, so cliched urban romance story, right? However, there are a few things about this novel that piqued my interest and guaranteed I'll be reading the rest of the series.

I was so excited about the TV show Blood Ties, and so saddened by the end, that I had to borrow these books from the library to see what started it, and how it goes on and what's different about Vicki in the books.
A few things are different, actually. What I felt truly important, and the reason why I didn't immediately go on to the next book in the series, is that the emotional tension that I so loved in the show seemed to be ... missing. There were times that Henry would look at Vicki and know...more

One of the things that I’m studying in the genre of urban fantasy is how a series works. If you do it right, you end up with an established character, a dedicated fanbase, and possibly even get optioned for a TV series based on your books, or even films. When studying popular series writers like Rowling, Butcher, and Hamilton, I gleaned from interviews that they wrote these series because they loved the settings and characters and their fans. Tanya Huff, however, states implicitly in the introdu...more
Blood Price is the first in a series of books featuring Vicki Nelson. Vicki was once the golden girl of the Toronto police until she developed a degenerative eye disorder, which has all but ended her night vision and is slowly reducing her peripheral vision. Rather than be given a desk job, she quit and became a private detective, much to her former partner and lover Mike Celluci’s dismay. If this sounds familiar, it was a short-lived show on Lifetime.

Blood Price and Blood Trail made extremely interesting reads, with an engaging storyline and likeable host of characters. We've all seen female protagonists like Vicki Nelson before - tough, stubborn and independent, with a background in the social justice department, and otherwise fairly normal in modern urban fantasies. What made Vicki more likeable, or at least more believable, is her unique handicap, rentinitis pigmentosa. Whoever's heard of a female detective that wore chunky glasses and is...more
The series book named Blood Price by Tanya Huff, and a Lifetime series named Blood Ties, is about trying to stop the demons from hell. It first starts with Vicky Nelson, a famous private investigator, in Toronto, Canada who was also an ex-cop, who hears screams in the dark alley. Even though she is not armed, she decides to go help the victim, in this was the first night she was able to witness a death from a vampire. However she was unsure to what she saw that night because she was not wearing...more

Watched Blood Ties oh so long ago and was really disappointed when it was cancelled. I saw the whole collection of books at the library while shelving the other day and have been meaning to check them out, so I took Fate's advice.

This was a fast paced book that went from zero to sixty in ten seconds. This is a good thing because as of right now, no one but Henry is that likeable.
One thing to look out for is that while this book reads like a television show (which makes sense considering the eponymous show of the same name)it also does weird POV shifts. Now, there are three main characters. In order, Vicki, Henry & Mike. Now, Mike has less page time but he's mentioned a lot and is in a lot of Vicki's scenes. That'...more

Despite having been written in 1991, this book holds up remarkably well. In fact, as Tanya Huff's intro to the omnibus version (Blood Price and Blood Trail in one book) mentions, the only things that make this seem set apart from modern day crime novels/urban fantasy is the lack of cell phones and reliance on computers/internet and the prevailing attitudes towards those of the nerdy or geeky persuation. In this book, we meet Victoria Price, an ex-cop turned private investigator living in Toronto...more
