This reminded me of Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones, only more of slapstick humor variety. This book takes populr paranormal tropes and thoroughly takes the piss out of them. It's dirty, hot and really, really funny! It's a great mix of paranormal romance and urban fantasy, and a heroine who decides in favor of bazooka instead of stakes is my type of gal. Recommended.

Well, just to start off, I asked Didi to give me something light and “fluffy” to review since I have been doing some strong, serious books lately. Well, she delivered! The “Biting” series is funny, sassy, sexy and oh-so-much fun!

In “Biting My Fire” we meet Elena and Bo. Elena, is a strong-willed police officer who is trying to make Detective in the town of Meier's Corners, a little town outside of Chicago. She is relegated to night shift and has

Elena O'Rourke is the junior probationary police detective on the third shift, pining desperately to make full detective status, when the body of Napoleon Shrimpf falls into her lap - metaphorically. Dubbed by Elena to be The Case of the Punctured Prick, she scrambles to solve this bizarre murder as she struggles to maintain her rep as a competent cop's daughter (WWDD - "What Would Daddy Do?" is a mantra of hers) amid the frustrations of an unwanted and criminally chatty partner and under the at ...more
I did like the story. I don't mind recommending it at all. Not sure that I will read Nixie's story as this one got more stars both here and on amazon and Nixie doesn't fare too well.

Why only 3 stars? It was the writing. The love just wasn't believable to me. Read Black Dagger Brotherhood and you are in love as much as they are in a day or to. This one I just couldn't really bite into like that. I loved her snark, but maybe it was too much? Or not at all the right times? Heck maybe it was because

I usually can pull something out of a book that I enjoyed but I really didn't like this book. I almost didn't finish it but came back and pushed through. I got it because it was supposed to be a funny vamp book/steamy romance and I have read a lot of books like that and enjoyed them. I didn't think it was funny - even though it was obviously trying to be. The fact that the main character didn't figure out the hot guy who kept showing up at night and biting her was a vamp until my kindle said I w ...more

Whilst this book is 1st in series, it is actually the 2nd bk written. This is the world of Meiers Corners, a satellite city of Chicago, with the good vamps protecting the unsupecting humans from the coterie of Chicago bad vamps. (think vamp mafia)

Detective Elena O'Rourke is given the first murder to happen since the 1920's and is determined to solve the case. Little does she know that it is a vampire killing.

Bo Strongwell, the local Master Vampire, is having trouble with a lot of rogue vampires

Seriously this book was so awful I wish I could give minus stars.

Elena is too stupid to live. How many hints do you need you ridiculous woman! Geez he's a fucking vampire and everyone but you seems to get that.

The male Bo...geez what a loser. He's alpha, then he's a giant pussy (and I don't mean cat) then he's spouting nonsense about her wetness and pussy and how good she tastes and how just one taste of her blood and he knew she was his forever mate (vomit) then he's cutting off a rogues head

A couple years ago I read The Bite of Silence which I would find out is actually the third book in the series. I'm finally getting around to starting at the beginning of the series. Bite My Fire being the first and it turned out to be an excellent read. Bo & Elena try to resist their attraction to each other, but they burn too hot to stay away. Exciting paranormal elements... Viking vampire anyone? Plus a mystery to solve. Mary Hughes has created a set of characters that charming, sexy and f ...more

I picked up Bite My Fire because I'm a fan of paranormal romance, and I'd heard this book was both funny and steamy. I was not disappointed on either count. Det. Elena O'Rourke's snarky internal dialogue and wacky adventures definitely make for a hilarious read; the desperately frenzied build up of her romance with vampire Bo Strongwell left me panting for more. The story itself -- of Elena's investigation into her small town's first recorded murder, the bizarre actions of her recently widowed y ...more

Small town junior detective Elena O'Rourke is excited to get assigned lead in a murder investigation. The victim has an odd injury in his private parts--two small puncture wounds. And even odder he was drained of blood. One of her suspects, sexy Bo Strongwell keeps turning up everywhere. She just doesn't trust his story that he's part of the 'neighbohood watch' and that he's her sister's apartment 'building manager'. What's up with that? And why does he keep nibbling on her when they kiss? While ...more

Written in 1st person, in the snarky voice of Elena, this book is off to a good start from the very first page. With golden lines like "bend me over and smack my ass with a waffle iron" and "think Santa in lederhosen", I fell in love with this author without even having to think about it.

With the German-speaking Mayor getting whipped by Heidi while on the phone with our Elena, this story is off like a rocket.

I accidentally read this after 'Biting Nixie'. Probably for the best. Book 2 is better than Book 1, but I appreciate Mary Hughes snark. It has been a while since I read a vampire book, so I'm not exhausted by the premise. My problem with the series is not addressing the fact the partners are going to age while their vampire partners won't. They will die and their husbands won't. I'm sorry, but I think this is kind of important.

I think this is my favorite book out of the series. Elena is refreshing. She seems real. Her desire to protect is compelling and her sarcasm and wit was appealing to me. As a detective its her job to protect but its also part of who she is. Elena would do just about anything to solve her murder case. Including dance on a bar, risking her job. Falling for the viking vampire Bo Strongwell, one of her suspects, wasn't part of the plan. The whole series is hilarious. I found that i've laughed at the ...more

I think I'll put all 4 books into 1 review. They are cute, funny, really sexy...something you want to read when you don't want to think. I'll give 3 stars to all.
A little different take on Vampires, I like the "common house" that they have with their love ones and "donors" living like in an apartment building.
They take off fast, the Vamps finding their one and only pretty fast so the sex gets going right off the bat. I like that the "bites" are orgasmic not painful or poison, all have a cute sto

I really enjoyed this funny, sometimes silly, sexy vampire romance. Elena O'Rourke is a junior detective on a small-town police force who's given a murder case to solve "quickly." The victim died with holes in his private area, so Elena dubs it "The Case of the Punctured Prick." While trying to solve this case, with every obstacle imaginable to slow her down, she keeps bumping into the head of the local "neighborhood watch," Bo Strongwell. Bo is sexy, tall, blond and causes Elena to lose focus o ...more
I'm so glad I'm done with this book. It was such a drag and the drag was so not appealing. I'll give it a 2.5 star for the parts I did like. The humor seemed so forced and most times unnecessary to me. The vampires the book were not properly established so the appeal was very little. The romance between Bo and Elena seemed so rushed. All of a sudden they were in love, and I was asking myself, "where did that come from?". I liked Bo as a character but Mary Hughes didn't establish the whole vampir ...more

Mary Hughes is all over the place. I feel as if I am read a straight stream of inner dialogue from a 12 year old boy crazy little girl in major need of some ADHD meds. The book had no structure- the sentences were all over the place, the slang was rough and pervasive, and the plot progression was nonexistant. And Hughes making the character take 80% of the book to "realize that vampires exist" was unbelieveable and frustrating. I thought the premise was good, but 3 pages in I was already rolling ...more

I read book 2 in this series before book one, and while reading them out of order is no problem because Hughes does a fantastic job of setting up her world of Meiers Corners and the denizens thereof, I liked the character of Nixie in book 2 just a bit more than Elena in book 2. Nonetheless, Elena is a winner in her own right, driven by her sense of justice and her need for sex with one irresistible neighborhood watchman, Bo Strongwell. The humor ranges from sly to laugh-out-loud outrageous. Just ...more

Too much humor(So much so I can't find it funny) for me to get into the romantic part.
Mini Review:

This story had me laughing out loud so many times, my cats abandoned the couch! Seriously funny & Seriously Sexy.
The plot twists and turns in slightly predictable but entertaining directions. Random thoughts become integrated into the story line to create a menage of humor, sex, and mystery. I loved it, was entertained every reading moment, and will be looking for more!

Great potential. I thought I found a perfect vampire romance: smart female cop meets ancient vampire. Turned out more like virgin nypho cop wanna-be meets ancient vampire. There was a lot of sarcastic witty humor, but too much sillyness for me. I found it enjoyable. I didn't want it to be over, just wanted to get to know the vampire a bit more and move the story along in parts. I may read the second one and give it one more chance. Silly, and funny...funnier, if you're German, Ja?

The entire town and every citizen are uniquely wacky in someway.
I would compare it to Janet Evanovich's plum series without the PNR aspect.

Recommended for those whose looking for some chuckles with the bonus of a hot Viking physique vamp that's awesome at pleasuring his woman.

frankly this book was just okay i'm not a criminal justice major or anything but i thought there was something wrong with the way the police department was run, add the fact that the case was ridiculously easy to solve and you have a two or maybe one and a half star book the main character was kind of infuriating with her horny-ness i just wanted her to shut up all of her private thoughts were about sex i mean come on...

I read this series backwards! last book first and this the first book last. I'm kinda glad I did, I'm not sure if I had read this one first if I would have read the others and I loved them both! This story was good, but, it took a really long time to get into the meat of the story. Lots of dancing around and no answers for over half the book. And once again written in first person, which is not a fav for me.

Wasn't to wild about this one. It had a lot of humor and quirky dialogue, but it was a bit slapstick. The story premis was good, but I just couldn't get into it. She had an annoying stupid detective partner and it took her 1/2 the book to realize her lover was a vamp even though he was biting her. Found myself skimming pages, but hoping it would get better and unable to just move on to the next book.

As a girl, I spun romantic, happily-ever-after stories to get to sleep. A husband, family, two degrees, and a blackbelt later, I'm delighted to spin them for readers.

I've lived with love and loss, in bright times and dark, and learned we can all use a break from reality now and then.

So join me for action, sparkling wit and red-hot love. Strong men. Stronger women.
