My Jekyll & Hyde Book Review:

Tips, in general, irritate me. Frosted tips, sirloin tips, mom tips, acting tips, signs that say "tips welcome" with a smiley face--they are all bad news. So why did I read this dreadfully tip-laden book? Well, I read it for new tips. There weren't any, though. I don't really think this book is necessary if you read the newspaper, listen to NPR or have even one friend who recycles. In other words, the information (tips) in this book are so readily available, so o...more

The focus of this book is implementing changes in your lifestyle that will be greener and also save you a ton of money. I eagerly snapped this one off the library shelf hoping for some new idea's on saving money.

My friend, Liz, calls me cheap. I prefer the term FRUGAL. :-) This book was a major perk for me because over the past 20 years, I have implemented about 90% of the suggestions in this book into our lives. We don't even think twice about it. We live a very pleasant life so none of it is a...more

This book is full of simple ideas in the pursuit of a better life. Many people are put off by activities whose sole purpose is to save the environment because it will cost too much money or energy. Shift Your Habit: Easy Ways to Save Money, Simplify Your Life, and Save the Planet takes the approach of small changes to your life that will save you quite a bit of money and, by the way, help the environment too! It is a very low pressure book as you can pick and choose the shifts that best suit you...more

I enjoyed this book, but I didn't learn anything new. Maybe it's because I'm an avid reader of frugality books and money blogs? I did think it was easy to read. Plus, I like the focus that saving money usually results in helping the environment.

The only tip I had a problem with was to turn your thermostat off when you go on vacation. If you live in northern climates, turn your thermostat down, not off, or you'll come home to frozen pipes. :)

The book is a quick read, and won't require an all-at-once overhaul of your lifestyle in order to save a few bucks here and there. I read it through in under an hour with a notebook in hand. I was able to translate the tips into a few simple "to-do" items, and for a few other things, just change how I do them - just what it says on the tin.

What I liked about this book is how it breaks down how much money each individual shift "should" save you. I also like that it talks about how each change helps the environment as well. I didn't see much that I hadn't seen elsewhere, but I am excited to try some of these natural face masks and washes.

Easy, digestible tips.

The only one I didn't already know? "Almost all food-related stains can be removed with spit. Yes, spit. And sometimes it takes a lot to get the job done."

Thing I will not do? "Live without television."

Thing I should do but don't? "Check your tire pressure regularly."

I really wasn't very impressed with this book; most of the ideas in it were just common sense. The author also suggests that many organic or eco-friendly versions of things are cheaper than oonventional versions, and this is almost never the case unless you are buying used.
Cyndi
I'm not sure what to give this. I didn't really learn anything, but I may not be the target audience. That said, I think there are better books on the topic.
Jillian
I've read several books on living green and I'm always excited when I find new tips. Great read.
Carol
Picked up a few tidbits here and there - the one about setting your water heater to vacation mode was great. Never thought of that. Was disappointed in the baby section. It was very short and really didn't have much beyond use cloth diapers and glass bottles (can't do either because of day care).
Selena
Enjoyed it. Simple tips that are often easy to implement. Good bathroom book.
Michelle Wallace
A good, quick read, though I already do pretty much everything it recommends.
Tori
Meh- most of her tips I already do. However if you're just starting out it's a good starter book.

Tamara says, "Easy, digestible tips."
Kristin
This book is mostly common sense. I could have saved some money by not buying it (but at least I got it on clearance when Borders went out of business). In the baby section she mentions cloth diapering but NO mention of how much money and resources are saved by breastfeeding?? Amazing . . .
Syntax787
good tips, and they seem easy to add to the everyday hussle.

Whether you want to save the environment or save a few bucks, this book has many simple, practical suggestions that will help you do both. An easy and interesting read.
Tina
An easy book to digest, Shift Your Habit, is filled with helpful energy (and money!) saving tips. I really like the layout of it.
Mary
I read most of the tips, but bypassed all the explanations. Turns out I already live fairly green. It gave me a few more ideas.
