Each of the homeless we met was unique from one another. No one was quite like Papa. Papa wasn't like Michael. Neither of them was like Jed, nor did they even like Jed. Funny how a term like “homeless” could dictate how society read people who lived on the street.

This book provides a view of homeless people, and the view comes from the homeless people themselves. Lots of pictures and verbatim comments and interviews are included... but that was an issue for me because each homeless person tells the author that she can't trust one of the other homeless people, either because they are on drugs or mentally ill. About half-way through the book I realized that what the homeless people were saying could just be one lie after another. That made the book frustra...more
This book intrigued me from the start. My husband and middle son are both amateur photographers, so I knew a little about Susan Madden Lankford. Her first book in this trilogy Maggots in My Sweet Potatoes: Women Doing Time, was a powerful visual commentary on women prisoners. I was looking forward to Downtown U.S.A. as I wanted to see what her vision would be for the homeless.

Wow what a powerful book. I was deeply touched, Susan Lankford not only gave a gripping voice to the homeless she also captured them with stunning photographs. A real eye opener and heartbreaking as we follow Michael, Papa and so many others through there daily struggles and see what it means to live on the streets. We cannot and should not ignore this problem any longer. This book should be on your "must read" list.
I really enjoyed looking and absorbing the atmosphere created in this book.
I wouldn't really call it a book, it's huge and much more than just a 'book'.
Very well written with lovely pictures, this had me go through a tonne of emotions.
This is a piece of artwork for want of a better word and one i will happily display for guests to peruse for years to come.

Susan Lankford grew up in the Midwest and holds a BS degree from the University of Nebraska. She attended Ansel Adams' prestigious workshops, studied under such photographic masters as Richard Misrach and Ruth Bernhard, and spent many years as a successful wildlife photographer and portraitist. The parents of three adult daughters, Susan and Rob Lankford live in San Diego.
