I love Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series. I'd definitely rate them as one of my favorite paranormal series of all time. My only complaint, and this is why it wasn't a 5 star review, is that I expected more out of Jenna. She went up against an ancient for Pete's sake! And yet she bailed on the Order and her bff Alex at the first chance she got.

What I loved:

7 hours was what it took me to read this book. I still can't believe it though,lol. I guess I really got caught up with it.
It was amazing. Much better than the previous book, although not as good as Tegan's, Rio's and Niko's books, but those are just too though to overcome,lol. But after those 3 this is definitely my fav in the series.

I did not enjoy this book as much as I liked "Shades of Midnight". I had been looking forward to this one, too, so I'm very disappointed.

First I found it difficult to like Jenna. Granted she'd been through a horrible trauma and was still nursing four-year-old wounds, but then maybe the book should have started later when she was a little less freaked. She was downright unlikable for the first half of the book.

WOW!!
I don't wanna say much since a lot of my friends haven't read this yet. Brock and Jenna's story was great! I really love their characters, and the development of their relationship. Brock is absolutely smexalicious!

This story picks up right where Shades of Midnight left off. There is lots of action, and the Order's ladies really stepped up in this one! Great continuation of the story, I loved it!!

I love how Adrian sticks to the series 8 books and she has never faltered from the romance and basic storyline like most series authors. This is a good story, just not one of the best I’ve read from Adrian. I loved that Jenna was not one of the breeds, but I wanted to know what exactly Jenna was and how her and Brock was going to make things work out between them since she wasn’t a breed. I guess I like clear closure, than again who knows maybe Adrian will bring Jenna out more in the coming book...more

The good news: for those of you who are new to the series, like me, you will be happy to know there is plenty of recap in TAKEN BY MIDNIGHT. Starting with book eight will not leave you wondering what the heck has been occurring within the prior seven books. The unfortunate part: I thought there was too much recap and not enough action. The first half of the book turned me away instead of pulling me in. I was tempted to skim quite a few pages due to all the dialogue and repetitive angst.

Jenna's character annoyed me. I don't have a problem with cop characters (though I do prefer to avoid stories with them just because I don't find them as interesting for some reason), but I had a problem with our heroine. I understand the trauma she was suffering from, but the pity party and her negativity made her extremely hard to like; not to mention her blindly running away from the situation. I agree with many other reviewers: Adrian should have started this story later on after Jenna adjusted to some of her issues. At least then she wouldn't have been frustrating to read about. As it was, she was hard to connect with.

Brock had the potential to be extremely interesting, yet I found his beginning scenes tiresome. Here's what you read about in the first half of the book: rage, angst, rage, guilt, grr. Now, don't get me wrong; I love rage and I love angst. But I also love reading about steamy sexual tension between my hero and heroine that makes me sweat wondering whether or not they're gonna do it on the kitchen table, or whether or not the hero's going to make a move and the heroine's going to slap him silly. I did not get that; probably because I didn't feel like I learned much about Brock's past and who he really is.

I thought the first encounter with Jenna was cute, and I loved how the two had an instant attraction, but after that... eh. There was too much telling, not enough showing, and not enough interacting (all of these apply to the first half of the book) between Brock and Jenna to make me feel invested in their romance. The romance aspect started strong when they met, yet it fizzled away as the story progressed to the midpoint.

The overall storyline was interesting -- which is why I want to start this series from book one. My only complaint about TAKEN BY MIDNIGHT was the fact that this felt more like filler than an actual story. What the heck happens to Jenna and that implant? What is she now? Will this all be addressed later on, or are we pretty much done with Jenna/Brock? I think I would have rated this higher if Adrian at least addressed this. I mean, there's so much fretting over what's inside Jenna now, and yet it simply gets shrugged off towards the end.

Because a lot of people have praised the prior books, I won't give up on this series. I will read at least the first two books by Adrian to get a better feel for the universe and characters. Perhaps if I enjoy those books, I will come back to this one and give it another shot. I suggest, for those of you who have not yet read this series, to start from the beginning. While TAKEN FROM MIDNIGHT is informative, I do not believe it is a strong book to introduce you and draw you into this world.(less)

I'm not really sure how to rate this. Like the other Breed stories, the writing is wonderful and I love being a part of this world. Lara Adrian is an auto-buy for me and this is a series that I go back to again and again.

Brock and Jenna’s story started at the end of the last book, Shades of Midnight, when Jenna was rescued from captivity with the Ancient one. From the first moment he saw her, Brock felt drawn to her, and that intense protective nature is carried over to their story. He barely leaves her side as she is bought to the compound to recover from her ordeal. But it is soon discovered that the Ancient has left her with a mysterious ‘device’ planted inside of her body that wreaks all sorts of changes within her. Remaining with the Order for further testing and observation, Jenna becomes drawn into the world of the Breed and the mission of the women of the compound to locate and rescue missing Breedmates that are being held by Dragos. All of this, while she and Brock tentatively explore the strong connection between them. Ooohh, it’s all happening!

I loved the relationship between Brock and Jenna. Jenna is still suffering from the tragic deaths of her husband and daughter four years ago, so in addition to everything that is currently going on in her life, she is still dealing with their loss. Neither she nor Brock, dealing with a loss of his own in his past, are expecting or prepared to fall for somebody else, and so they try to keep things simple between them, caving into the feelings they have, but without the entanglements of romance. Holy freaking hotness, these two steam it up!!! And of course it doesn’t take long before they realise what a load of crap all of that is, and they fall deeply and hopelessly for each other. And through it all, Brock is absolute perfection! Strong and dependable, he is also incredibly gentle and tender with Jenna, and he absolutely stole my heart!!

“I don’t know what I want … other than more of this. More of you.”
Brock lifted her beautiful face on the edge of his hand. “Take all you want.”

So freaking swoony!! And I loved the twist in this story, that for the first time, the heroine is a human, not a Breedmate, so there is the added complication of them contemplating a life together even though Jenna is mortal and they cannot have the bond that the other couples do. My heart broke for Brock as he came to his realisation.

She wasn’t a Breedmate, and that troubled him. Not because of the fact they would never have offspring together. Not even because of the absence of a blood bond, which would connect them to each other inexorably for as long as both of them lived.
He didn’t need a blood link to strengthen what he felt for her. She was his mate already, in all the ways that mattered. He loved her, and although he wasn’t sure what their future would look like, he couldn’t begin to imagine living it without her.

But I suspect that this is not the end of the story ;) There are a lot of loose ends left at the end of the book, but knowing Adrian’s writing, I’m expecting more of Brock and Jenna’s story to be told in future books, and I cannot wait!

In other parts of the action, Drago continues to be an evil bastard - taking hostages, attacking Darkhavens and plotting an almighty strike against our beloved boys. The girls of the series are in fine form, being all badass and awesome, and I LOVE THAT!!!! We also see a bit more of the other sides of Chase and Hunter (whose stories are yet to come) and are introduced to Lazaro and Kellan Archer, as well as Corinne, the heroine for the next book.

This was a really exciting addition to the series. Brock and Jenna’s story had me swooning, and the overarching plot is zooming along at a great pace. I freaking love these books!!!!(less)

This story continues right after the ending of Shades of Midnight with Jenna having just been rescued from the Ancient who was holding her prisoner in her home in Alaska. She has been taken back to the Order's compound in Boston to recover and is being cared for by her best friend Alex and the warrior Brock. Brock has the ability to take away people's pain by absorbing it into himself which is something that Jenna has been badly in need of during her recovery. Since her escape from the Ancient Jenna has been going through some surprising physical changes, nobody knows quite what is happening to her and it is up to the Order to try and solve the mystery.

Anyone who knows me can tell you that I'm a massive fan of this series, it was my first introduction to the world of paranormal romance but remains a firm favorite. People tend to compare this series to JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series and although there are some similarities I only really found that noticeable in the first couple of books. These are both series that I love but for me the Midnight Breed series comes out on top in any direct comparison. Lara Adrian writes great stories with fabulous romance and and interesting, suspenseful story arc that has had me hooked from the beginning. I love the fact that both the heros and the heroines have important parts to play in the overall story and we get to see all of the previous characters make regular appearances.

Jenna is probably my favorite of Lara's heroines, she is a strong character who has been through a lot but has managed to survive. She's a tough cookie who has always had to work extra hard in her job as a police officer to prove she is as good as any man and she doesn't like to show any weakness or want to have to rely on anyone for help. Although she has a tough outer shell she is much softer underneath and could really use a bit of looking after and Brock is the ideal man for the job. Both of them have suffered from losses in their lives and understand how the other is feeling - they really are the perfect match for each other.

Brock is a newer member of the Order and one that we hadn't been given much information about until the last book in the series. We know him as a tough warrior who loves trading snarky comments with Kade but in Taken by Midnight we get to see a much more sensitive side to him. He is so caring towards Jenna and some of the scenes between them will melt your heart. The passion between them is intense from the start (the shower scene is particularly memorable!) but neither of them are looking for long term commitment. Their relationship develops in a completely believable way and I loved watching Jenna and Brock together.

As for the ongoing war between the Order and Dragos things are really hotting up so expect plenty of action on that front. We get the answers to some of the questions raised in previous books but there are also new questions raised & I'm particularly looking forward to finding out more about what is happening with Jenna and the effect that may have in the future. I enjoyed the build up for Hunters book which is coming next, he is a really interesting character and I'm looking forward to meeting the woman who will get under his skin. There were some great scenes with Hunter and Brock but I especially loved one scene with Hunter & Mira where we get to see a new side to the aloof warrior. It seems like a really long wait until Deeper than Midnight!

Overall I think any fans of the series will love Taken by Midnight, it is the perfect combination of suspense and romance that is both sweet and erotic. I loved getting to see snippets of the Order's daily lives and spending time with the characters from the previous books but that didn't take anything away from the relationship between Brock & Jenna. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book & would recommend this series to all fans of paranormal romance.(less)

Jenna lost her family in a car accident years ago and has lived with the grief since. She is attacked in the last book and her determination to survive pulled her though it. I admired her character a lot for her intelligence, stubbornness and ability to keep picking herself up and moving forward no matter what cards she is dealt. Like most she has her moments of self doubt but nothing that made me dislike her character. Brock is one of the newer members of the Order, which is an elite group of ancient vampire warriors. He is a skilled fighter with a likable personality and selfless in his act of taking pain from others onto himself. He also carries baggage from his past that helps him relate to Jenna. These two click right away and you know a physical relationship between them just won't do. They make each other stronger and help each other move on from their past tragedies.

The ancient who let Jenna live didn't part without leaving a part of him in her. Unexplained changes are happening to Jenna that give her abilities no mortal should have. I thought this was an interesting twist and glad that she wasn't just another breedmate, women born with a special birthmark that makes them the only ones who can mate with breed males. I did wish that more time would have been spent on examining her new skills. I felt they were talked about then written off too quickly. I hope that more light is shined on this in future books because the whole thing really had my curiosity going.

The Order has been after Dragos for some time. He is responsible for horrific crimes against his own people that includes hiding the last ancient and kidnapping breedmates to create his own army of assassins. Though the main focus is Jenna and Brock's relationship, there is some new light shed on the situation. Dragos will not stop or run and hide from the Order just because they have managed to ruin his plans. He has yet unseen plans in the works that will prove to make him harder to find and stop for the Order. Some questions are answered and even more are left hanging. I've come to expect that from this series. I enjoyed the ending but did feel it was tidied up a bit too nicely.

Taken By Midnight is the latest in Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series which is one of my favorites. This book did feel like it was a stepping stone to something bigger plot wise but it should not be skipped. Jenna and Brock's relationship alone is worth the read and there was a twist or two that I found interesting. The Midnight Breed series is a great balance of suspense, danger, unbreakable bonds and steamy love scenes. Taken By Midnight is all this while adding it's own spin to a series that is a must read for fans of paranormal romance.

As one of the breed Warriors Brock has sworn to protect the humans but once he meets the strong willed human Jenna, he may be what she needs protected from. As a human he has no future with her, he is assigned to protect her but none of this seems to deter him from pursuing her.
After surviving the attack from the ancient vampire Jenna finds herself surrounded by strange unnatural men, one man in particular seems to be the only thing that she can cling to for sanity. She knows she should be scared but it doesn’t matter, hid touch sets her body alive in ways she never imagined. With the weird anatomy issues going on inside her from the ancient, she must come to grips with all the changes her body is making. Can Brock help her though it or is she naive in thinking that he feels the same way about her as she does him.
This was a great addition to the series, of course I love all the breed warriors and Dante and Tegan will always be my fave. But I see Brock in a whole new light and I like him a lot now. He was so sweet and protective of Jenna I liked it. Even if they didn’t have the bond the other warriors have with their mates he still loved her with equal passion. The changes in Jenna from the ancient are interesting and it will be interesting to see how that works out. I felt the ending was lacking in a few details I would like to know but maybe it will all get in explained in some of the upcoming books. I loved the end when Drago found out about Hunter. I will be interesting to see what he has planned for the Order. The story was nonstop actions, I couldn’t put it down and stayed up way to late reading it.

OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!!! I am so totally loving this series! I cant say that this was my favourite couple of the series (Tegan still tops for me), however the story is just so absolutely incredible, I cant wait to see whats going to happen. Dicevo, una storia carina utile ai fini della trama base della serie, necessaria per chiudere un capitolo iniziato con il libro precedente e obbligata per sistemare altri due personaggi poco incisivi.
Brock, come Kade, è uno dei pischelli nuovi e, quindi, ha avuto poco spazio per diventare un personaggio fisso e per entrare nei nostri cuoricini. Sa il cielo che mi sono resa conto solo a metà di questo libro che Brock è un afro americano, quindi si può immaginare quanto mi sia rimasto in testa durante le sue apparizioni. Tutto sommato Brock è un buon personaggio, però poco delineato. Sembra uno stampino neutro sul quale basare un personaggio maschile tipico dei romance paranormali: gli dai i canini, gli occhi stile fendinebbia, glifi e muscoli e tié l'eroe è pronto. Nulla di particolarmente affascinante, niente carisma super sviluppato, si lascia schiacciare dalla presenza di altri personaggi (Hunteeeeeeeeeeer) pur rientrando negli standard che il ruolo richiede. Brock è ok, credo, niente di trascendentale. Jenna, invece, non mi è piaciuta. Il tipo di donna che vuole fare la dura, la maschiona, l'indipendente incattivita tutta 'lasciami in pace!' con tanto di grugno infastidito. Ma che rimanga a cuocere nel suo brodo! Ma no! L'antico la prende come cavia personale e Brock si lascia impegolare dal suo stato di damigella in pericolo. Il tira e molla emotivo di Jenna è pesantino, troppo self centered per i miei gusti. Avrei preferito uno scontro più personale tra i due personaggi, invece di Brock che insegue Jenna che a sua volta lo vuole ma non vuole cedere eccetera...noia.
Interessante, invece, lo sviluppo della trama perché sembra che le acque si stiano smuovendo e finalmente succede qualcosa di concreto: l'antico pare essere morto - per ora, non ne sono convinta - e Dragos si è ripreso in fretta dall'ultimo colpo dell'Ordine, ha in serbo un colpo basso e son curiosa di sapere cos'è.
Non mi resta che aspettare con la bava alla bocca il prossimo romanzo - esce il 27 Agosto YEAH! - perché Hunter mi ha ossessionata dalla sua prima apparizione. Le mie aspettative saranno la mia rovina.(less)

I really liked that the author took a different direction with this book and didn't make Jenna just another breed mate. Not knowing exactly what was going to happen to Jenna after she was given the "gift" by one of the originals made the book hard to put down, although I totally called all of the changes she went through. Brock always came across as toughie in the other books, but it turns out that he is the biggest sweetie of the bunch. Am I the only one that thinks Brock sounds a whole like Ba...more

Ne Il bacio di fuoco la Adrian esalta in modo particolare il grande lavoro svolto dalle compagne della stirpe nella lotta contro Dragos...partecipano attivamente, sul campo, e grazie al loro impegno e al loro coraggio l'ordine raggiungerà un risultato importantissimo . Nonostante la serie sia già all'ottavo libro, continuo a leggere la Adrian con molto piacere: la sua narrazione è semplice e coinvolgente, per niente noiosa. Il bacio di fuoco non fa eccezione, però devo ammettere che tra tutti quelli pubblicati, questo è quello che mi è piaciuto di meno. E' la storia tra Jenna e Brock a non avermi "presa" completamente. Jenna è una donna con un passato estremamente doloroso...sopravvissuta ad un tragico evento che le ha portato via gli affetti a lei più cari. A questa sofferenza si va ad aggiungere l'incontro non certo piacevole con l'Antico...incontro dopo il quale la sua vita non sarà più la stessa. Brock è un guerriero deciso a non instaurare legami sentimentali seri e duraturi, che fin da subito si prenderà cura di Jenna. Inevitabile che tra i due si scateni la passione e che nasca un sentimento più profondo. Nonostante la loro coppia presenti una novità interessante rispetto alle precedenti, non sono comunque riuscita ad appassionarmi a loro come per gli altri. In ogni caso, consiglio assolutamente la lettura di questo libro, ritengo che la Adrian sia un'autrice sulla quale "puntare" ad occhi chiusi.(less)

Soy muy tiquismiquis con lo de empezar las sagas a la mitad en lugar de por el primer libro y normalmente no me gusta comenzar por cualquiera por si me pierdo detalles. Sin embargo, esta vez me he saltado esa norma y no me ha ido del todo mal. Es cierto que debería haber empezado por el principio, porque siempre es mejor partir desde cero e ir avanzando, pero al tratarse de historias independientes (bastante típicas en este género) dentro de un gran arco argumental común, no me he encontrado completamente perdida. Es más, tengo la sensación de que me faltan detalles, pero nada esencial para comprender la historia. Aunque desde luego me muero por hacerme con los anteriores para deleitarme con todos esos personajes que he conocido en Las puertas de la medianoche. Y eso es algo que me ha encantado de la autora: mantiene a los personajes secundarios al frente de la acción, pese a que no sea propiamente su libro, los muestra de una forma interesante y los mantiene activos, no como meros espectadores de las aventuras de los protagonistas de turno.

Me he encontrado con una historia bien construida, narrada con una prosa amena y ágil, en la que los personajes principales son el plato fuerte. Jenna es la protagonistas femenina, una mujer fuerte que se enfrenta a la vida con coraje pero que ha sufrido mucho. Brock, por su parte, el personaje masculino principal, es todo un guerrero, valiente, apasionado, bien entrenado y sin miedo a nada, dispuesto a enfrentarse a lo que haga falta por proteger a Jenna, de quien se quedó prendado nada más verla.

He encontrado algunas similitudes o detalles que me han recordado aunque sea vagamente a la fatídica Hermandad de la Hormona con Patas pero, por fortuna, ya estoy curada de espanto porque esa fue una de mis primeras lecturas del género y una no estaba precavida. No han sido tantas como para que llegara a molestarme, solo pequeñas pinceladas curiosas. Además, en mi opinión, esta saga le da mil vueltas a la de la Hermandad y pluma de Lara es mucho, mucho, mucho más cuidada y brillante que la de Ward.

En cuanto a si ha decaído o no en relación con los anteriores ejemplares de la saga, no puedo opinar; lo que sí puedo decir es que, si bien el ritmo no me ha parecido trepidante, la autora mantiene un buen desarrollo de los personajes y de la historia, manteniendo en todo momento el interés debido a ese halo de misterio con el que lo cubre todo. Ahora bien, no estoy diciendo que la relación entre los personajes principales sea especialmente sorprendente o novedosa, que no lo es, pero sí que sabe alargar el suspense en la historia que se forma alrededor de ellos con asombrosos giros argumentales que atrapan la atención del lector.(less)

Alzi la mano chi, avendo letto il settimo volume, non si era già fatta il film su una storia d’amore dell’Antico? Invece no. Scherzetto. La Adrian mi aveva abilmente depistata, perché ha scelto, almeno per ora, un ben altro destino d’amore per Jenna, ex-poliziotta infelice (prima di incontrare il suo vampirozzo).
Non che Brock non sia all’altezza degli altri Guerrieri dell’Ordine, però, un brivido…alieno non mi sarebbe dispiaciuto.

Wow - book 8 and I'm still reading the series, that's always a good sign, right? I plan to read the next book, Hunter's story - another good sign. So while I'm continuing with the series and it still holds my interest, I'm not rushing out to get the book on release day. In fact, I waited on this one for the library copy to be available. I'm not sure what it is, I like the cast of characters, I like the premise - alien vampires crashing on Earth but... it's become a comfortable read. As in I pretty much know what to expect based on previous books and the blurb. There are a few surprises but nothing earth shattering.

Jenna Darrow was introduced in the previous book, Shades of Midnight. She is good friends with Alex Maguire, heroine from that book. After Jenna's vicious attack she is taken to the Order's compound in Boston to recover under the care of Brock, a Breed warrior. It's there that Jenna begins to learn what was done to her and the after-effects of the attack. I liked Jenna but it wasn't like "hey, she great!" more of a "oh, she's nice". She does have a couple of TSTL moments triggered by the freakish situation she finds herself in. She was attacked by an alien vampire and now she's living underground with more vampires and something weird is going on inside her. That would freak anyone out. But she deals with it and with her growing attraction to Brock.

Brock is the calm in Jenna's storm. His ability to take away pain with just a touch keeps him by Jenna's side after she's attacked. He cares about her but he doesn't want to get too close. His past mistake with a female has him determined to keep his distance from Jenna which is hard to do since he's basically put in charge of her. So the inevitable happens, they give into their attraction and spend a hot time between the sheets. And then tell themselves it was only sex. Yeah, right. Brock is a hero that would rather stay in the background. Most of the time he's not an overbearing alpha but he does try to order Jenna around a bit but it was his need to see her safe and not an ego trip. Jenna is more outwardly alpha than Brock. But Brock's easy enough to like. He's a typical vamp hero - dark, dangerous side tempered with a gentle, caring side for his mate.

While Jenna and Brock are denying their growing love, the rest of the Order is working on finding the evil that is Dragos. He has eluded them for sometime but they have been making progress. One thing I do like about this series is that the females, both current and former heroines, don't fade into the background. This time they are working to find the missing Breedmates that they think Dragos kidnapped to use for his breeding program. The women even have their own "war room" in the compound and use their brains and special talents to track down potential leads. And it's not just the men humoring them, they take the women seriously and want their input and involvement as long as their safety isn't jeopardized.

The overall story arc, centered around Dragos, doesn't move along as much as I had hoped. There are a few questions answered but also more crop up. We do find out what is causing Jenna's transformation but it's unclear what she's becoming. A few new characters are introduced with the potential for their own stories but it didn't feel like sequel bait, they actually did add substance to the plot.

The relationship between Brock and Jenna was full of bumps and bruises. They both had past tragedies to overcome before they would allow themselves to feel worthy of being loved. Neither had any problem caring about the other, it was the fear of permanence that held them back. I did think Adrian did a good job showing both Brock and Jenna coming to terms with their pasts and realizing it was okay for them to move on to a lasting relationship. I also liked that Jenna told Brock why she was letting him go, rather than pretending she didn't want him or care about him. Of course, they worked it out and got their HEA.

The next book in the series, Deeper Than Midnight (June 2011) is Hunter's story and yes, I will be reading it. Hunter is one of Dragos' former assassins who is now a member of the Order. He's hard to know, keeping to himself and showing no emotions so it will be interesting to see how he evolves when he falls in love.(less)

Romantico,intenso,appassionante La sua storia è meno tormentata degli altri personaggi di questi volumi,per questo affronta l’amore non come l’ultima spiaggia per non soccombere alla brama di sangue ma solo come mezzo per sentirsi completi e appagati . Per questo la storia d’amore,seppure, equamente costruita fra scontri e sensualità non risulta ma eccessivamente crudele. Il libro è ambientato quasi interamente nel quartier generale dell’Ordine e questo ci permette di ritrovare un po’ i precedenti personaggi che non smettono mai di sorprenderci con la loro umanità.In questo volume viene descritto l’evolversi del sentimento tra Brock e Jenna in un modo che risulta molto delicato, coinvolge la tenerezza e la semplicità delle loro azioni, quelle decise come quelle che li portano a inciampare e persino quelle che li conducono a una piccola fuga. Jenna ha avuto una vita sofferta( morte del marito e della figlia in un incidente d’auto) e ora si aggiunge la paura per la sua condizione fisica inspiegabile dopo gli abusi dell’Antico. Solo che invece di mandare in pezzi la sua vita le permette di sperimentarne una nuova chela riporta ad amare “Non era mai stata capace di provare questo senso di liberazione. Resta in sospeso cosa è Jenna,la nascita di un nuovo membro e cosa ha in mente per loro Daegon.Impossibile non fare il parallelo con la saga della Ward . Qui per certi versi ritroviamo molto dei guerrieri della confraternita,ma il modo di scrivere è diverso,forse meno ricco,ma ugualmente interessante. Una buona prova . Tre stelline.

I was not sure if I was going to like this book because of how I felt about the last book so I cautiously gave it a try. This one like the last one was about a warrior who hasn't played very prominently in the main action though his page time did increase in the last book. I am happy to say that I was more into this story and found it a really good read.

Brock is impressed with Jenna from the moment he sees her after she survived being held prisoner by an Ancient in the last book. Jenna has injuries and trauma after the experience, but those are nothing to the new mysterious changes going on in her body because the Ancient put something inside her. Brock has the gift of taking upon himself someone else's pain. He does that with Jenna even as he admires the way she is facing everything that has been thrown at her.

Jenna is inwardly in shock and frightened of her new situation of being an alien experiment that nobody can give her answers about as well as learning that her brother is dead and she can never go home to her old life. First she does a runner which is a legit reaction to it all and then she tries to be a tough gal and go it alone. Soon though, she is drawn in by the friendly breedmates who befriend her and she is drawn to the mission of freeing the captive breedmates that the ladies are all working on. It awakens Jenna's cop instinct and skills making her want to be a part of the team and help. Through all the changes in her life, she slowly begins a tentative relationship with Brock feeling very attracted to him even though they both swear that there will be no long-term since they both have fragile hearts from past hurt. Can she open her heart again and take a chance on love?

Brock goes about his tasks, but is all to aware of Jenna and his protective and possessive instincts kick in. The protectiveness causes some battles between the two because of their mutual stubbornness and independence. Their mutual attraction makes him eventually decide to just go with what they are feeling and act on it. He knows that at some point it will end because bottom line? Jenna isn't a breed mate and if she were, he doesn't want a mate because he's already proven that he can't protect those in his care.

The plot revolves around Brock and Jenna's relationship, but it also follows the mysterious changes Jenna is experiencing as well as Dragos' nefarious schemes. This book ended leaving most threads still dangling which has me eager to grab up the next one. I am so intrigued by these mysterious changes in Jenna that are still happening and the those hints that Dragos dropped about worse things that are still to come.

As I said before, I was concerned that I wouldn't like this one because I had trouble getting into the previous couple primarily because they just didn't get enough 'couple' time. This installment spent more time with just the couple, but it was a near thing for me. I was really close to not liking Jenna and tossing my hands up and not caring if she survived or got her happily ever after. Jenna's stubborn 'I don't need anyone and I'm going it alone' was really getting on my nerves when it was proven time and again that she really had no business taking that attitude in the condition that she was in. BUT-
Fortunately, Lara got her to see sense soon enough and act like someone who had law enforcement training and was worthy of Brock's admiration. After that, I enjoyed her character and rooted them both on to happiness.

So, this was a good installment in the story and I feel eager again to continue the series. (less)

Jenna really isn’t in a good place. She has spent her life feeling that she has something to prove, to her Dad & brother, fellow officers, husband etc. She lost her husband and six year old daughter in an accident that she blames herself for. She is captured and persistently fed upon by the escaped Ancient one … the blood loss making her weak. Her brother is killed and she finds out that he was a dishonest cop. She then wakes up to find herself confined in some sort of high security establishment, confused and disorientated … and discovers that The Ancient one has implanted her with something that it is changing her DNA and molecular make up. She has grieved the loss of her husband for four years but finds herself falling for the big warrior called Brock … a tough, seasoned Breedmale who is willing to take her pain into himself to relieve her suffering … that is even willing to endure sunlight to save her.

Brock has allowed himself to grow attached only once before in his existence and distracted, he lost the very person he needed to protect. He has consequently kept all his relationships light and casual, sex only … with no feelings involved. He finds himself falling for the feisty ex-cop despite the fact that that she is only human. Only Breedmates can bond with Breedmales, only they can produce offspring and prolong their lives by exchanging blood with their mates. He can never have children with Jenna. He would have to watch her age and die … but still, he cannot help falling for her. However, the changes wrought by the implantation makes their future uncertain as Jenna starts demonstrating strange powers and body changes.

Dragos is angry about being forced out of his multi-million pound laboratory by The Order. He is still determined to force through his evil rebellion, despite losing his grandfather, The Ancient one … that he has tortured, experimented on and bred. Nothing is too evil for him to attempt when seeking his goal. Not the capture, imprisonment, rape, experimentation and death of innocent Breedmates. Not the mass murder of innocents. Not the creation of assassins. Nothing.

Dragos is escalating his manipulations and murders. He is determined to eliminate all the original Gen Ones and The Order. He is determined to see himself in power and mankind reduced to nothing more than slaves providing a ready food source to be used in any way that The Breed see fit. The tendrils of his power extend further than The Order could ever imagine but as they work tirelessly to track him down, they manage some successes of their own. However, Lucan realises that The Order are more vulnerable than ever. They may have successfully killed all but one of The Ancient Ones. They may have spent hundreds of years hunting and killing Rogues. However they are family men now. Having so many Breedmates in the compound makes them more vulnerable. Their battles with Dragos has resulted in a lot of bloodshed and they seem no nearer catching him, despite their constant searching and tracking. Lucan is beginning to feel like they are living in a house of cards that is ready to fall despite his best efforts to keep The Order and their families safe.

There were a couple of little inconsistencies but nothing that spoilt my enjoyment of the book … for example, when Alex refers to Breedmates several times before Jenna finally asks what the phrase means.

There are a few scenes when the impact of the powerful warriors fairly jumps off the page ~ like when Brock rips the freezer steel door off it’s hinges. The image of this powerful male, dressed in black fatigues, leather coat, fully armed and transformed, being so determined to rescue his woman that he literally pulls the door off is a very powerful one. Then, when Jenna is trying to take in all that’s happened to her, the supernatural beings that she is surrounded by and what has been happening to her, Dylan tells her that she can see dead people and she literally doesn’t know whether to burst out laughing or just give in to the madness around her.

I really enjoyed this book and the way that the story of The Order’s battle against evil escalates with each successive book. I have already started reading book nine! (less)

Questa volta i protagonisti sono Brock, un guerriero della stirpe (già conosciuto nei precedenti libri ) e Jenna, un' umana (avete letto bene!) ex poliziotta, amica del cuore di Alex (la compagna della stirpe di Kade, conosciuta nel precedente libro “Il bacio oscuro”).
La storia inizia con i ricordi di Jenna sull' aggressione subita in Alaska da parte dell' Antico, per poi spostarsi nel complesso dell'Ordine a Boston. Fin dall'inizio si nota quanto Brock (forse uno dei più delicati tra i guerrieri con un passato alle spalle che lo ha reso estremamente garbato verso il sesso femminile), oltre ad essere sessualmente attratto da Jenna, sia sensibile, affettuoso e protettivo verso la ragazza. Jenna, oltre ad essere anche lei attratta fisicamente dal bel vampiro, deve sconfiggere i suoi sensi di colpa per la prematura dipartita del marito e della figlia, dimostrando una forza di carattere e fisica (grazie al dispositivo impiantato dall'Antico) fuori dal comune. In alcune situazioni si trova perfino a dover salvare Brock da morte sicura e lei e Renata, sono di fondamentale aiuto in una battaglia importantissima per la salvezza delle compagne della stirpe. A differenza degli ultimi romanzi questo è più corale, infatti troviamo proprio tutti i guerrieri della stirpe e le loro compagne (perfette sia come guerriere che come strateghe). Tutte (eccetto Tess all'ottavo mese di gravidanza) impegnate in una guerra (sia di mente che di fatto) contro il cattivissimo Dragos. Sicuramente se dovessi dare un voto alla storia d'amore tra Brock e Jenna darei quattro stelline, ma l'importanza delle donne svolta in questo storia e il ritorno in massa dei guerrieri, mi ha fatto apprezzare maggiormente la lettura perciò posso sicuramente dire che come voto si merita il massimo se non oltre. Sono proprio entusiasta di questa serie che a mio parere ha avuto un leggero calo solo con “Il bacio del risveglio” e “Il bacio eterno”.
Spero che la leggereditore sia così fantastica da regalarci la storia di Hunter (“Il bacio immortale”) tra quattro mesi, la sua innocenza me lo ha fatto diventare uno dei personaggi che amo di più fin dalla sua prima apparizione nel “Bacio svelato”.
Per chi ancora non avesse letto nulla di quest'autrice e volesse iniziare a leggere, ricordo che essendo una saga bisogna iniziarla dal primo libro e seguire la numerazione. (less)

What I Loved: I loved how this book was a huge catalyst in pushing forward the story of the fight between Dragos and The Order. Most of all though, I love the story of Brock and Jenna. This is probably going down as my second favorite love story in the series. Both of them had so much they needed to heal from past relationships and so much they had to handle in the present, that theirs was such a classic love story. Could love conquer all? She was not a breedmate only human, neither were interested in love, and most of all were the ramifications they were having to deal with based on what happened to Jenna at the end of the last book. I won't give anything away but their journey to each other was just a wonderful read!

What I Liked: We got to reconnect with all the Breed and their Breedmates. The book personified why I am a series reader, I love seeing what characters I care about are doing now. This book also opened up a huge realm of possibilities on where the series can go from here: from what is happening to Jenna (the ramifications of the attack from the last book) to what happened at the end (which I won't give away). I am excited to see what happens next.

Complaints: I wasn't a big fan of the abrupt end but I kind of see where there was no other choice. I will be waiting for the next book!

Why I gave it a 4: I realize this book is one that mostly just pushes the story forward but to me it is one of the best love stories of the series. Brock and Jenna are the reason this book is so good. Their story is well worth the read as well as the leaps forward the overall story takes.

Who I would recommend it too: PNR readers. However, I will say this. If you haven't read the rest of the series, you can read this one but you won't get the richness of the bonds all the characters feel towards each other. Lara does an excellent job of giving you the background story without hitting you over the head with it but you would be missing an excellent progression of story if you just skipped ahead to this book. Read the series, it is well worth the time!

Shelves: midnight-breed

Man I love this series. I mean it isn't the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward but it is nearly as good. I haven't been that curious about Brock in the other stories but he really held his own in this book (much like Kade in the previous book). He has a backstory while not really being fleshed out, it is intriguing. Adrian makes you care about Brock without knowing a lot about him.
