If the world of contemporary literature could be compared to, say, food, it would be a buffet line, full of soggy green beans and sour tapioca pudding. But Naeem Murr's "The Perfect Man" would be a gourmet meal: juicy, perfectly cooked sirloin steak with a piping-hot baked potato--oh, and cheesecake for dessert.

In other words, the flavor and texture of Murr's latest novel is, quite simply, exquisite. He crafts characters with a complexity and intensity that they become more than &q...more

This is an excellent novel, full of interesting (if largely flawed) characters, a compelling trio of lifelong friends, the tragedies that can come from thwarted lives and fateful decisions, and an ode to how a displaced boy can find community, family, and one day, some solace and hope.

The "Perfect Man" is Rajiv, a boy born of an Indian mother and British father who is dumped by his ne'er-do-well dad on the doorstep of a woman who had been living with his brother in a tiny town in M...more

When I joined a book club with a friend and was made aware of this selection, at first I was afraid that it was a saccharin love story/romance. Nothing could be farther from the truth! I had a tough time believing that a man wrote this book, since almost every male character in it is a complete waste of oxygen! And the ones who are not complete jerks are sad sacks, either alcoholics or social phobics or mentally ill.

So I then became afraid, part of the way into this novel, that this aut...more

A bit choppy - moves briskly in parts then drags - the writing is also a bit sporadic - in parts it flows beautifully, other parts it is as if the author has challenged himself to be as obtuse or high falutin' as possible - these parts I skim (but my vocabulary is improving despite my efforts to avoid).

Also, seems to be afflicted with a bit of the "everyone has a deep, dark, past or odd sexual tendencies" Oprah drama.

The negatives said, the characters are sharp and interestin...more

After reading this book I stopped reading fiction for a while, because I wanted to let the feelings this book brought up to stew a little.

It's strange and wonderful when a book seems to be telling your story, when it is clearly not (that's not what I mean -- you know what I mean). Even stranger and more wonderful when you think it is also telling the stories of people around you. The universal contained in the one -- will I ever manage that?

I was scared and exhilarated, and I am not jo...more

A coming of age story in Pisgah, Missouri - this book bounces along under a dark cloud.
The author makes human depravity plausible, almost acceptable and juxtaposes it against
innocence, compassion, sincerity and intelligence. Fully developed characters, each with his own story to unravel. This was an excellent book - I left off the fifth star because it left me feeling kind of leaden - like there was as much evil in the world as good, and evil might be ahead some.

An irresponsible father takes his son, Raj, from India to England and dumps him with his brother who, after a period of time, takes the boy to Missouri to dump on yet another brother but instead the child winds up with the brother's girlfriend. That's the start and, amazingly, uncomplicated part of his life. Of course, everyone in this small town has problems: dysfunctional is the norm. Fascinating book about growing up, trying to fit in, love and loss, etc.

What does it mean to be black or white? What does it mean to be a woman or a man?

The residents of tiny Pisgah, Missouri in the 1950s have definitive answers to these questions, and they are determined by who holds power over whom.

Rajiv, a young man of English and Indian heritage, is considered lower than all (including women, the insane, and the poor) because of his dark skin and status as a foreigner.

this book caught my eye in the library where (at my tiny branch) there are REALLY not too many books to choose from - annoying, but a good way to find a hidden gem. yes, i first picked it up because of the title - but no, it turns out it is not a chick-lit wry romance novel. i am staying up too late and taking the local train to and from work instead of the express because it's so amazing.

There are a TON of characters in this book. I read the first 100 pages or so not knowing who anyone was, but I couldn't stop reading because such interesting things kept happening. It took me a while longer to read this book than most - I think because I kept having to stop to figure out who in the world people were.

This was a really great novel about an Indian boy who's shipped off to live in Missouri with a woman who sort of knows his father's family. It's the 1950s and a small town, so he feels out of place, but still makes some great friends. Their story, along with the town's dark secrets, makes for a compelling read. A-.

An East Indian born boy named Raj is dumped by his father and relatives in a small Missouri town in the 1950's. Compelling read that explores childhood in a small town, but not only the happy happy side of things, also the angst of growing up...I'm not finished yet, but I highly recomdnd it...

I'm mixed on this book. It took a while, almost half the book, to feel engaged as we get to know that a variety of characters in this dysfunctional and dark midwestern town. But I eventually was engaged and at times really interested in the atmosphere created in this novel.

This is a tour-de-force of characterization. It is the story of the childhood and later life of the son of an irresponsible English father and an a retarded Indian mother, as well as all the friends and acquaintances, good and bad, with whom he spends his pre-adult years.

Beautiful, superbly written literary fiction. Made for a great book club discussion - not all liked it at first because of the complex plot, and dark side of human behavior, but as the discussion evolved, most came to appreciate the merits of this extraordinary book.

LOVED this book. It's everything you want in a novel in that it's so balanced. It's focused yet expansive, the characters are specific yet relatable, it's funny and suspenseful, and the prose is beautiful. I can't wait to read everything else he's written.

Read this book for my book club and just hated it. Overly dramatic with a writing style that told you everything instead of showing it. There was not one clearly developed character and just did not ring true with voice, time, history.

I blew through this book on a plane ride... It has some of the most amazing character development I think I've ever read. The story itself is interesting but what he does with his characters is amazing. Read it!

Multiple characters "come of age" in this complex and dark novel. This is not "beach reading". It is deep and dark and powerful. After you finish this novel, you need something light for balance!

Pretty engrossing story. Shifts perspectives a lot and lets us see the inner workings of different people's minds...Love, loneliness, belonging. Good stuff
