This book is made of 3 parts. The first (p. 1- 50) is the foundation of her system, excerpts of which can be found below. The second, (p. 53-236), is age specific advice and solutions which are organized as follows: Newborn to Five Months, Six to Eight Months, Nine to Twelve Months, Thirteen to Eighteen Months, One and a Half to Two and Half Years Old, and Two and a Half to Five Years Old. The third (p. 239-334) discusses Co-sleeping and the Family Bed; Twins and Siblings; Nightmares Sleepwal...more
We followed this for my 2nd child after having read and tried every other approach with my first and him. This is the only approach I found to make sense, and therefore work. The idea of letting a baby cry it out, except when you are ready to get him/her in the morning or after a nap, never made sense to me or my babies because they couldn't tell time or keep track of when is an appropriate time to be picked up. Plus, it was painful for everyone, and I hated causing this pain to them without the...more
After reading "Baby Whisperer" and "Baby Wise" and having no success getting my child to sleep on his own, I finally went to the library and found this book. BEST BOOK EVER. It helped me to get my 15 month old to go to sleep on his own, and the best part was that I didn't have to walk out of his room and let him cry. I hated that part. I always felt so mean and guilty. In this book, it gives you "The Sleep Lady Shuffle." It allows you to stay in the room and to be w...more
Plain and simple. The Sleep Lady is my hero. Hero, people. Do you understand me?
For those of you who do not follow my personal blog, I have two little girls. They are 2 and 3 years old with only 15 months separating them. I haven’t had a decent night’s sleep in 2 or 3 years. These girls, while they are magnificent children, are simply not the greatest of bedtime goers. I have never had a problem with them sleeping through the night…With the exception of a few months here and there wh...more

People, all I need to say is: my baby has been sleeping glorious 8-9 hour stretches and putting himself to sleep in ten minutes without me even needing to be in the room AND without our family having to suffer through a cry-it-out technique. Thanks, Sleep Lady!

I think if you got this book when your baby was a newborn and followed West's suggestions all the way through, you'd have a really pleasant sleep training experience. We didn't pick the book up until our baby was 7 months, but we had already been implementing most of the program. When it came to following West's method of sleep training, I dialed back the type and amount of crying I was willing to tolerate (she suggests soothing at set intervals; I just listened to whether the baby's cries sou...more
This book helped us to get our youngest to sleep through the night in her own bed w/o nursing after bedtime. It took about 28 days, but she went from sleeping in our bed from about 11 PM until morning and nursing on and off (more on than off) all through the night . . . to nursing around bedtime and then sleeping on her own in her crib all night until morning. She sleeps from around 8 PM until about 6 AM now w/o nursing. And she goes to bed AWAKE for both nap time and bed time now. Our life ...more
Book was recommended to me by my sister-in-law. Was tired of 13-month old not sleeping through the night, and being hard to put down, but didn't want to just let him cry it out in a dark room. This book saved my sanity, and helped my child be happier and a better sleeper. He was sleeping through the night 7 pm - 6:30 am with no waking up at all within 2 weeks of starting the technique. He became much easier to put to bed for naps and at night. Thank you Sleep Lady!!! I highly recommend thi...more
I really loved this book. I especially loved how she laid out her plan but still allowed for ways to make it my own without speaking as if I would screw the whole thing up. My son hadn't slept through the night in over 7 months when I read this book. Within four days he slept through the night without waking once.
I appreciate that she has the book broken down into different age groups. I read other books that weren't much help if I didn't apply their theory from birth. With We...more

It's not that I think her methods are flawed. I've heard many people who say her method worked great for them. I just hate her. I should never have read a sleep theory book. It just makes me depressed and even more guilt-ridden. I hate her and her perfect know it all ways and her own two perfect little children who despite colic slept through the night at 8 weeks. I hate her smug little, "even with other siblings, you should still be able to get the baby on a regular nap schedule."...more
This is the best book I've read so far on developing a healthy sleep life for parents and baby. She charts a warm, fuzzy middle path between the hyper-attachment style of parenting and the cold, hard, never-look-back CIO approach. We didn't actually do the entire "sleep lady shuffle" as described here, but her presentation of data about sleep and cognitive development, "sleep architecture" etc, is much more practical, warm, and sympathetic of what parents go through than We...more
This book came highly recommended by someone that I agree with on a variety of subjects. There were a lot of helpful suggestions, but I didn't agree with everything. We planned and mapped out how we were going to use what the author calls her "Sleep Lady Shuffle" method, but decided not to in the end. It is a little bit cry-it-out (at worst), but with the parent still in the room so it isn't as traumatic for the child. We did combine some of her ideas with the No-Cry Sleep Solution...more
WOW! This book helped me to get Alden to sleep (he is currently 15 months old) after 13 months of no schedule and an insane Mom and Dad (probably kid too). It does not use the "cry it out" method so I was most comfortable with this approach to sleep training. I would strongly urge any parent to get this book. It is the most humane way to get a baby/toddler to sleep without letting them face their crying alone. It wasn't easy to do but it was well worth it. Now everyone in the hou...more
In The Sleep Lady's Good Night, Sleep Tight, Kim West provides a lot of information on the science of sleep as well as a program to teach children from newborn to age five how to sleep better on their own. The first four chapters provide a great foundation for understanding how children sleep and why it is so important to help teach them to self-soothe and to not rely on their parents to help them get to sleep in the middle of the night. Although I read the majority of the book for the purpose...more

OK. This is the book that I bought when Kayla was transitioning from the crib to her toddler bed (which happened at 18 months because she was climbing out all the time and scared me to death, crazy little monkey-girl).
I wish I had this book to begin with; Baby Wise is my "Baby Bible" and this book compliments it really well. Baby Wise is more about how to feed them, and this is pretty much only about sleep, but I think it mentions feeding a little (can't remember very well,...more

Oh man, best book ever. Went (at 13 months) from co-sleeping to crib sleeping through the night in 3 or 4 nights with very little crying. I had taken time off work and was prepared for 9 days or more of sleepless nights to get the transition, but this method reigned supreme. Obviously every kid is different and my results may not be typical, but if you're looking at transitioning to crib sleep I highly recommend this book.
This is the best book I've found on helping babies sleep. She has some good bonus information as well, like a description of the five s's of soothing babies. She has her own sleep training method, but she describes other training methods out there and is flexible about using them when they make more sense than her own. She talks about sleep habits/ sleep training through 5 years old.
I ready an article by Kim West in a parenting magazine once and decided to check out her book from the library. We used it to sleep "train" Hazel, then bought the book because I felt it was the best sleep book we'd read, and we'd read about five or six. Obviously not every method works for every family, but this one is a match for us - thank goodness for Kim, "The Sleep Lady."
Of the many (MANY!) sleep books I read in my quest to find sleep, this one ended up being my favorite and the method I most closely followed. It's a good middle ground between the no cry method and Ferber, and the breakdown in ages and stages is very valuable. Lots of compassion for both parent and child, I read and reread this one many nights.
I loved her advice for helping teach children to sleep. It's a nice compromise between let them cry it out and holding them every night. And it is conveniently broken down into age group sections. So you don't have to read the whole book (I don't think I have, but I have referenced it plenty).
I got a lot of good ideas from this book. It helped me to move out of my son's room and to the end of the hallway while he is falling asleep. Soon I hope to be able to say goodnight and walk away. I will refer to this book as I walk the "sleep modifying" path.

I just finished this book so I haven't done the whole program yet but I have already used some of the strategies described and in only 3 days my 18 month old has gone from waking up 3 times a night and not sleeping in her crib to only waking up once and is sleeping in her crib.
This book was recommended to me by one friend who is a mom, and the other sleep book I'm reading was recommended by another friend who is a mom. After starting them both, Jack and I decided that the other book was more in line with our parenting skills, so I stopped reading this one. But I do think this system would work well for some parents.
This book is a great reference for child sleep. It gives average sleep needs for children from birth to five-years-old. It also gives some tips on helping children sleep as they grow. We have loved this book.
I read the whole book but only tried it for two days. Ben was so hysterical that this method didn't work for him. I am trying some of the tips though and getting him into a new routine every day to get him to be tired at the time he would take a nap or go to bed.
An excellent resource on getting a child to sleep better and as a result be happier when awake. A gentle method that I find to be a very happy medium between the extremes of attachment parenting and Furberizing.
Every new parent needs to read this book to really understand sleep patterns. I wish I had it when my baby was a newborn. Now she is five months old and it has helped tremendously. Get this book :)
This is one of the BEST books dealing with sleeping and babies/children. With easy to follow plans to help your babies/children become a self soothers and get to sleep themselves. I recommend it to anyone that have children of any age. I would also recommend giving it as a baby shower gift.
This book is fabulous! After my son suddenly stop SSTN, the sleep lady got us back on track. We started again when my daughter was 6 weeks and have not had a problem with her SSTN, ever!
I just picked this up at the library since the book I really wanted was checked out...and I was surprisingly impressed. There were a lot of good ideas that I've been applying.
