I read Tennis Shoes Gadiantons and the Sliver Sword. This was a great book for me I enjoyed it very much. But I have to tell ever one that if you are not LDS then a lot of the anicent people spoken of in these book you will have no idea lived at all. But if you are LDS I would say this book is ment for you. You can read it for yourselve and deiced if you share my opion or not. I wish this book was longer because I think Chris Heimerdinger could have throw in more small problems so the book could...more

This is the much better sequel to Heimerdinger’s previous book. It’s basically The Lord of the Rings with an LDS gospel twist to make it a little bit different.

This is my favorite of his books. Possibly because of the multiple Lord of the Rings references, certainly because of the epic feel of the story. I love the cleverness and realistic reactions of the characters. I love the mix of ancient Book of Mormon villains in our modern world. The settings of Provo and Mexico are both familiar and str...more

I really liked this book. The first one was fun and surprisingly well-written. This one was even better. I especially liked the familiar setting of BYU. Since the characters were closer to my age this time, I really became involved in a way I never could with the first book. The moral lessons taught were incredibly insightful and true. I found myself thinking about my own problems as the main character was dealing with his. Besides that, the action was great, the plot fun, and the characters int...more

This is a great adventure book about good vs. evil. I listened to this whole book while driving to and from work, and I never wanted to get out of my car! There is still a lot of cheesy dialogue, but you have to remember it was written quite a while ago. I love reading a book that reminds me about making good choices and being a good person. Again, I would really recommend this series to a younger audience, but it's fun for almost anyone.

This book was much better than the first in the series. I loved it! Suspenseful and gripping story, and also very spiritual with some wonderful and profound truths sprinkled throughout. The only thing I missed from the first book was the ancient setting, as this one takes place entirely in modern times, so it lacks the "imagining what these ancient people were really like" aspect. But it was an interesting different direction to take. I will definitely be moving on to the next one in the series!...more

This was the second of two read-alouds that I read to my kids over the summer. The first was Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites. In some ways, this one wasn't quite as exciting, but since a healthy portion of the book takes place at BYU, I loved all the references to that location that I could picture so vividly as I read. My son loved it as much as the first.

The second book in the tennis shoes series, this book is a good change from going back to the time of the nephites, to remaining in present times and having a group of gadianton thugs as the protagonists.
I believe it is the only one in our series set entirely in the present day, but it still brings the nephites to life.

I guess I would have to say that I didn't hate this book. I liked it the first time I read it. It's an OK story. However, when you get down to it this book is little more than a bad knock-off on The Lord of The Rings. Of course, this is such an obscure book that there is little chance that Tolkien's family would ever know of its existence so it doesn’t really matter. The author should have quit after the first book.

Another problem I noticed with this book as well as the rest in the series is tha...more

I enjoyed it, despite some grammatical/spelling errors and use of big words. The story was fun and interesting. In both Heimerdinger books I've read, I find he abandons characters in a difficult situation until everything is pretty much resolved. I found it interesting who his first love became.

This book is interesting and okay. It is about a guy named Jim who meets ancient people from earlier times in search for a sword. Jim and a good one of the men and some of Jim's friends and his sister have to get rid of the evil sword before the wrong hands get it, if they don't already have it.

I liked Gadiantons, but not quite as much as Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites. Gadiantons was a little darker, which I didn't love. Still, Heimerdinger created an exciting, quick-paced story. It was fun to see Jim, Garth, and Jenny again, and to meet a few new characters as well.

Jim Hawkins is now in college at BYU and is just reaching thanksgiving break. When it finally comes he told his parents that he was coming up to texas to spend thanksgiving with them but they told him not to come cause people have been coming to their door asking for him and they were dressed as indians. Jim decides to go any ways and helps and old jershonite f riend from the past to help him destroy something evil.

This series is still awesome the 4th or whatever time around this is. I loved reading these to my kids when they were smaller, and still like to come back to it by myself every five years or so. This book still has Jim as the main character, except he's college age now, not 13 anymore.
Tyler
Not the best of the series, but still a really good book! I really found it interesting when Hiemerdinger added a twist and set the setting to modern times. It was a good book with lots of action and suspenseful scenes. It leaves you on the edge of your seat when it ends.

I liked this one alot better then the first one. This one i thought was more intence and i really liked the age of the main characters and they were more mature and grown up. I liked the ending and i'm reading the third one. I'm kind of ready for a new series though to have a break with it but i'm going on!

OK -- so again we listened to the tapes. I was a little worried that this one would be too intense for my kids, but they really liked it -- especially my 11 year old. It was all set here in our time, which I thought wasn't as good as the 1st, but I still liked it.
Becky
We're half way done listening to this one. Our whole family loves these. Even Wesley - I don't know why, because I know he doesn't understand what is going on - but he cries when we turn it off!
Done with this one too now. We really liked this one and I'm sure we'll be starting the next book in the series this week.
Angie
Another fun one. I had to laugh at myself having a hard time putting it down when there is so much other "stuff" to do around the house. I better take a break for a few days and get some work done before the fam gets suspicious! =)

I really like this book. The story is exciting, and it is easy to read.

Nine years have passed since Jim Hawkins' first time traveling adventure. He is now a returned missionary attending BYU. His life is suddenly turned upside down when Gadianton Robbers from 50 B.C. emrge from the time tunnel, in pursuit of a cursed sword once wielded by the Jaredite king Coriantumr.
Jim and Garth must now take the sword to a place it can be destroyed: the original Hill Cumorah down in southern Mexico, in a box...more

I didn't like this book as much as the first one. It is basically a Mormon version of Lord of the Rings, and not nearly as good. I sense less adventure and more indoctrination in this one. Hopefully they get less preachy or I might not get through the whole series!
Lisa
A wonderful continuation of the series. Jim, by now a college student and returned missionary, comes home for Thanksgiving only to discover that there are strange people asking about him and following him. Soon, it comes to light, that these are men from Book of Mormon times - and not just any men, Gadianton Robbers - who have come to receive an ancient and powerful sword. Jim must not only find the sword, but destroy it before the evil men can get a hold of it.

A fun adventure, and I loved the...more

By far the best in the series! This one is a little darker and a little edgier than the others, and for some reason, I think it's Heimerdinger's best book in the Tennis Shoes series.
Ann
Now in college, Jim, Garth, and Jennifer are again caught up in a fight of good vs. evil when they must return a sword with power over its owners to its final resting place in Mexico.
Ian
Much more sophisticated than the first. Functions as a thriller. Plus, a lot of it happens at BYU! and Renee is the best character in the series. Sadly this marks her only appearance.
Katherine
I liked it, but it was Lord of the Rings reheated, with an evil sword instead of an evil ring. Still, very entertaining, and I remember liking it very much when I read it first, long ago.
Angie
This is a little different than the other books in the series because the characters do not got back to Ancient times, rather the ancient people come to modern times. I love this series
Chris
My least favorite so far. It gets kind of preachy and the story drags. I am all for a good moral to the story, but this one was "be perfect or else" and it got tiresome.
