Oahu Revealed is the ultimate guidebook for a vacation to the most touristy island in Hawaii. The easy and enjoyable to read first hand writing style makes this one vacation guidebook you'll read cover to cover rather than just as a reference for specific topics here or there. I've heard there is a revealed guidebook for Maui, Kauai and the Big Island as well and should we return to Hawaii on future vacations, I would absolutely think those guides would be "must have" - this edition ha...more

This book is pricesless! My Sister and Brother-In-Law live on the Island of Oahu. My Father-In-Law just moved in with them there on the island, from his home state of Michigan. He has Mesothelioma from working around asbestos. He is on oxygen 24/7. While living here in Michigan, the weather is not good for his health, with the humidity to the winter cold. It made it really hard for him to breathe. Here, in Michigan, he only had a 'possible' 3 months left to live. Living here broke his ma...more
I didn't really need a guidebook since I'm staying with friends who live here. But on my first morning, my body still on east coast time, I woke up way before sunrise and needed something to read while I awaited the arrival of daylight.

This is definitely one of my favorite travel books, and although I'm not planning a trip to Hawaii anytime in the very near future (I can always dream) I like to look through it occasionally. I was actually on Oahu about 6 years ago and took a tourism course through my University while there. Our professor required the class to purchase this book, which was like our bible for the 3 and a half weeks we spent there. I picked it up the other day and read through about half of it. Mainly because I...more
I've had so much fun reading through and planning our trip for this fall. There is so much info in here, so many AMAZING pictures. I love it all. I also love that you can go to their website for any changes/updates in anything you read about in the book. Plus, did I mention that the pictures are AMAZING?! Those guidebooks with small print and little to no black and white pictures are okay, but with this one, I feel like I'm already diving into Hawaii and it makes me even more excited for ou...more
See my review also for Big Island Revealed. Same review, essentially. I poured over other books on Hawaii and Oahu, and this one was the best. The "Hawaii Revealed" series also has up-to-the-minute info on their website, so you can get the latest scoop on accommodations, etc. We booked many of our activities based on the recommendations given here. Forget Foder's and Frommers and even Lonely Planet. This is the series you really want to have for your next trip to Hawaii.
This series is excellent, and this one is no exception. This should be the template for all guide books. We stayed with friends that live on the island, and the book was still useful in picking restaurants, knowing when things were open, and even highlighting some places they weren't familiar with. It's fun to read, great maps and other forms of guidance (e.g. when to pack your mosquito repellent), and helps us make the most of our trips to the islands.
Excellent excellent guide to Oahu. Took it on our honeymoon with us and it gave us great and accurate insight to restaurants, sights, and places of Oahu. We found this awesome hidden beach that made us feel like we were on an adventure! It was really helpful to have price indications and reviews before we went to restaurants too. I highly recommend this book if you are going to Oahu anytime soon!
Sometimes too chatty for my taste, but otherwise accurate, honest, and everything a guidebook should be. Doughty gets especially high marks for his balanced treatment of Hawaiian history and his command of little-known trivia. Reading this will tell you what the "Eddie Would Go" bumper sticker means, and what one mistake the Japaneses made in the Pearl Harbor attack.
Pretty decent overview of the island and what to see. It gives honest opinions about what is touristy and what is important, what you should see and what you should skip. There were a few things I wasn't aware of that this book convinced me to take a look at while living there. For visitors, I don't think you can go wrong with this one.
Again, the five-star review doesn't mean this is on par with Moby-Dock, just that it's the best at what it is. This series is head and shoulders above other Hawaii guidebook series, really giving you the lowdown on all the best spots to visit, even how to get to individual beaches or even just spots by the side of the road. Indispensible.
A friend recommended this right before our trip and I'm really glad we bought it. The other guides basically recommend everything. This guide gives it to you straight, what is worth it and what is not. We used this every day on our first trip to Oahu, and found it well-written, useful, and informative. The only guidebook you need.
It did not live up to my expectations. I thought it was much worse than the books on the other islands. It was far too generous with the "Gem" and "Ono" awards given and missed some significant detail in some of the sections (e.g. long wait times, prices, large crowds etc.)
This is a comprehensive guidebook for Oahu. It is filled with good ideas on things to do and candid comments. His opinions are quite strong and do not necessarily coincide with those of other travelers. There are many books on Hawaii, but this is an excellent book on Oahu.
Loved it! Even though I lived there for 3 years, I used this book as a guide when I went back to visit (taking my husband for his first trip there). The book is super informative and well organized. We found lots of fun things to do that I had never tried before! A must read if planning a trip to Oahu.
This was a big help planning a recent trip. One of my favorite spots on the trip was directly the result of this book, so I was glad we had used it.
I had to add this to my collection of loves because first, I read the whole thing and second it brought me Hawaii in full beauty!
I broke down and checked this out from the library. I've always been sort of morally opposed to this series since they blithely say things like, "Just jump over the fence by the no-tresspassing sign, ignore the Private Property signs, and do whatever you like! The dumb locals can't keep you out, you're a TOURIST! Do whatever you like! You deserve it!"
And okay, yes, there's a smattering of that in this book, BUT, that SAID

I am all over this book. A friend who is traveling with me to Oahu handed it off to me and it's addicting. Great full-color photos, no-nonsense reviews and text that is actually fun to read - not DRY! Great maps, too! Our list of things to do on the island has just expanded exponentially!
If you're visiting Oahu, you need this book. Nuff said
This book has been VERY helpful! I have really enjoyed it! :)
Book #2 for trip planning!
This book is indispensable if you're visiting Oahu. Doughty was bang on about almost everything - the only review I disagreed with was that Chinatown was worth half a day - I spent an hour there and that was quite enough.
Doughty has a good sense of humor and he's not afraid to tell you the truth about a lot of these places. If you only buy one guide book, it should definitely be this one.

You're not going to believe it, but despite the fact that this is "just a travel guide" it is one of the most well-written books I've stumbled across in the last couple of years. Worth reading even if you have no plans of visiting Oahu (though the book may make you change your mind!)
this is one of the best travel books i've ever read/used. apparently the locals are none too pleased with the author, who refers you to AMAZING places you wouldn't hear about in the average tour book. i can feel their pain, though i was happy to escape the other droves of tourists.
Cannot imagine visiting Hawaii without these books. Invaluable resource.
Our trip to Oahu was amazing...some of our favorite snorkeling spots were only found because of this book! We referred to it for everything...shopping, snorkeling, boogie boarding, eating, driving, sightseeing, etc...I took it everywhere with us.
I find this series of guide books to the Hawaiian Islands extremely useful and truthful in their assessments.
I didn't find this as useful as the Maui Revealed or the Big Island Revealed, but it was still good.
Excellent guidebook written by locals. Will take you on many adventures in Oahu! We used it on our honeymoon and are taking it again on our next Hawaiian vacation.
