Não acho este livro inferior ao "A minha verdade é o amor", acho-o diferente, nem parece que foi a mesma autora a escreve-lo. Este livro é muito mais profundo e sentimental. Emocionei-me em diversas partes. Mais uma vez simpatizei com as personagens, até com o Richard que no fim admitiu os seus erros e procurou ajuda. A greatly satisfying read, The Edge of Winter introduces the reader to Neve; her daughter, Mickey; Ranger Tim O’Caseys; his father, Joe; and Shane, a teenage surfer who’s a little rough around the edges. The characters all share a love of birding -- particularly snowy owls -- and sunken Nazi submarine, the U-823, off of their beloved Refuge Beach.

this was okay. it made me cry, which probably means i've officially crossed over to the bad place.
it was sappy, and too simple, and not that well written. and all the diving references were wrong. which leads me to believe her Uboat history was off too.

Didn't get past the first few chapters. The characters and plot were predictable, unimaginative and far too cookie cutter for my tastes.
This is the second book of Luanne Rice's that I've listened to & I quite enjoy the stories. They are perhaps wrapped up a little too neatly for real life, but sometimes a good happy ending is what you need in a book.
Looks to me like she has a trend of involving the sea, animal lovers & young people in her books. Often characters with broken pasts that need to find themselves again, and usually do so with the help of sweet characters who come into their lives.

The current rating for this book on Goodreads is 3.65, and I think that’s a pretty accurate representation of its quality. The plot was rather predictable, with very few surprises. Pretty much everything progressed along the lines you’d expect. What made this novel worth reading, though, was Rice’s ability to draw rich, three-dimensional characters. I read this in 24 hours which must mean that on some level I was moved by the story. "The Edge of Winter" will interest young female readers. The story of Mickey and her mother Neve, slowly expands to include a number of interesting and believable characters that truly add to the story. The plot is a bit heavy handed and the happy ending may turn off a sophisticated reader but will be charming and engaging for the younger reader. This was a very good book. It told a good story with characters that people can relate to. It held my interest enough to finish reading it in one sitting over the course of a couple hours. I liked that the "happy ending" seemed realistic and showed how happy endings don't always mean that everything works out the way that you thought they would. The Edge of Winter was very enjoyable. It was very easy to get wrapped in the story, and there was a gentle pull to set things right. I may be biased because I love to read about the interworkings of families and I love nature, especially birds. Families are a complicated subject and I think that Luanne Rice handles them well. I have always enjoyed this author, and I think that this is my favorite to date. It contains, family difficulties, World War 11 intrigue, love of nature, and the importance of forgiveness in all of our lives. Não chega aos pés do anterior, mas não é mau. É um livro para o triste, mas com uma bonita mensagem de esperança e de todos merecer-mos uma segunda oportunidade.
Se não tivesse ainda lido o anterior, de certeza que tinha gostado muito, assim posso dizer que gostei mas sem o brilho do anterior que é fantástico. Mesmo assim, é um livro a guardar pela mensagem e pelo amor que ela sempre nos traz nas suas personagens. Aqui é nas relações entre mãe/filha e pai/filho em várias gerações.

At first I thought this book was so ridiculously fluffy and unsubstantial that I wouldn't be able to enjoy it. BUT it turns out it was just what I needed. I'm also reading 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy and that book combined with general life stress makes me want to hang myself. But this book came to the rescue. I am now officially done with summer reads! I gave this book 3 stars because of the good research that went into the narrative about snowy owls and their behaviors as well as the history of the U Boats who came so close to our New England shores during WW2. But the cheesy story line interwoven into those two story lines but a bit much. And I also think I'm done with novels by Luanne Rice - unless of course I'm actually on a beach with nothing to read.
This book was written by one of my favorite authors. In this story teenagers help save a local treasure. People learn about migrating birds. There is a sub-plot about snowy owls. I did enjoy that love melted a few hearts in this book. One of my favorite quotes from this book is,"There is goodness in the world, Mickey." The character of Mickey tried to see the goodness in everyone and in everything. I will be seeking out this author again.
This is a story about loss. There is a teen-age girl who has lost her father to alcoholism and divorce, a teen-age boy who lost his father to a surfing accident when he was a toddler, and a middle-aged man who lost his father also to alcoholism and PTSS and his son to the war in Iraq. Together they find a cause and fight for it and find a way to reconnect with the ones they lost. I thought it was a wonderful story and couldn't put it down.
This book is not technically categorized as Juvenile Fiction, but it certainly reads that way. Although it has many adult themes i.e. alcoholism, post traumatic stress syndrome,forgiveness,loss of loved ones to death, divorce - the dialog and some of the descriptions are simplistic and contrived. Made it about three quarters of the way through but I just couldn't finish this book. The story was a ho-hum romance - the added plot involving the snowy owl and the sunken u-boat made it interesting, but the characters were still too cookie-cutter. The reason I couldn't finish it was the choppy, forced writing. Too bad - she has a ton of books at the library, so I was hoping it would be good so I could go back for more...
I might be a little prejudice reviewing this book. It is set in Rhode Island and clearly the author knows Rhode Island. And, the story is about World War II and men who served with my father--even though Luanne Rice fictionized the book, the details of the 492nd Bomb Group is very accurate. Her father served in the same group. Anyone who grew up at RI beaches will recognize the references in the book.
A good story! It talked about historical and environmental preservation without being too preachy. Instead, it focused on how important the beach and the offshore WWII U-boat wreck were for various members of the community. I love stories where the individual character's lives are so intertwined; in my opinion, Rice does a good job of doing this without being too predictable.
This book seemed formulaic. It had all the right elements to make it a bestseller including blossoming love, environmental advocacy, and anti-war undercurrents. Predictably, the hero is the high school drop-out, and the rich kid is the bully. And predictably, all the characters come together, teary-eyed, as they share their abusive pasts.
This book was hard to get though. It had nothing that I was interested in. It was mainly about the distinction of a type of owl (the white owl i think) and how selected people were trying to save it, while others just beat on it. Throw in a teenage romance with the parents disapproving. I had to force myself to get though it. Not a keeper.
This was a cute story with a young girl falling in love at the same time that her mother falls in love. Secrets lead to trouble with the older couple, while attempting to do the right thing leads to trouble with the younger couple. A lot of reference to the wars and military, as well as, lots of information on different bird types (snowy owl in particular). It was easy to read.
Quite a fast, easy read. Fairly predictable but guess I need that this time of year. It brings up some history from WWII. The description of the East coast and the birds there was great. Wouldn't go out and buy this book, but someone gave it to me to enjoy then pass on. Glad I did read it.
This is my second book by Luanne Rice. As with the last one I read, The Geometry of Sisters, I'm not sure who her intended audience is. There is a mix of teen and adult so while the story is good, I never really can get into it. This is the type of book I will need a reminder to remember what it was about - good but almost boring.
