What if you discovered that you knew nothing about the person you were married to? Creepy stuff. It would seem far-fetched, except that I've read several of Ann Rule's true crime stories about women who married dangerous men. These men fabricated life stories for themselves and the women fell for it, to their detriment. The main character in this book, Isabel Raines, is like those women. She's relatively happily married, wealthy, and has a successful career as More...

I admit, I went into this one with some trepidation--I'm not a huge fan of books about authors (unless the author in question is in academia--go figure!)--but I really enjoyed this.

Isabel Raine has breakfast with her husband, Marcus, and then he never comes home. When she tries to find out what happened to him, she finds out that Marcus never existed. That, and he's taken everything--all of the money she's made, and the company he was so proud of turns out to have been nothing but a More...

I believe I requested this book because it was mentioned on DorothyL and thought it sounded interesting. And it was interesting, though only in the manner of an assumed identity thriller. It's the story of Isabel Connelly Raine, whose husband Marcus leaves for work one day and never returns. Isabel goes to his office the next day to talk to his business partner, who has not heard from him either. While checking Marcus' desk, she is interrupted by a raid. The group are wearing jackets with FBI on More...

n Lisa Unger's DIE FOR YOU, Isabel thought she knew her husband, until the night he didn't come home. Married to Marcus for five years, and except for one brief indiscretion by her husband, Isabel thought they were happy. After alternating between anger and panic all night, she finally gets a phone call from his cell phone- and hears a violent struggle and a man scream on the other end of the call.

A call to the police goes nowhere, as a husband who doesn't come home is not high on th More...

Ordered this from the library to help me finish my A-Z Challenge but was really surprised how much I am enjoying it. Started it last night as I couldn't sleep and have almost finished it. A real page turner. You really want to know what she is going to discover next. First time I have read anything by this author and am certainly going to order any of her other books from the library.

Basically Isabel thought she had a wonderful marriage and a great career - that is until he walks out More...

I'd actually probably give this a 2.5 stars rating... in all fairness though, this isn't a genre that I read frequently - I read it because I needed a "U" author for my ABC Challenge.

Okay... here are some of my dislikes;

- Okay, so the main character, as is described on the jacket blurb, is betrayed by her husband, who is not who she thought he was. I get that she's upset and all... but I really didn't understand her motivation for trying to find him after he dis More...

am i the only one who hates it when an author creates a protagonist who is an author??? it just feels like such a blatant cop out to me.

lisa unger has a knack for addictive popcorny mindrot. she creates ludicrous plots, usually involving a heroine with severe trust issues who blindly falls for the wrong guy and then who must suffer the consequences of once more misplacing that hard-earned trust. sigh. here, it's isabel and she's fallen for a man masquerading as another man, a man he More...

“Why?” This was a thrilling novel that had me putting myself in the character’s shoes to see if I thought I would make the same choices. I definitely wouldn’t have the guts for half of Isabel’s choices. This novel shifts perceptions of the various characters so the reader is able to experience what is happening all the time and not missing any details to put together the eternal question of “why.” I found this a fun way to present the story. Another change from the usual thrillers these days is More...

Isabel Raine has a really good life. She has a good career and a wonderful husband. Isabel and Marcus have been married for five years. They have gone through a lot together, including a miscarriage.

Marcus leaves for work. As he goes, he tells Isabel "Thanks for being the most beautiful thing I'll see all day". It is late at night and Marcus is not home yet. Isabel calls both his cell and his work but no one has seen or heard from Marcus. Marcus has now been missing for ho More...

A bestselling writer and her software designer husband are living the ultimate urban dream. With a beautiful home in Manhattan, skyrocketing careers, and an extravagant lifestyle, they seemed to want for little. Except that when it came to Isabel Connelly and the man everyone knew as Marcus Raine, nothing was as it seemed.

Isabel and Marcus seem to have the perfect life until one day Marcus goes off to work, but doesn't come home. This sets Isabel on a quest to discovering who the man More...

My first Lisa Unger book and actually I was very pleased with it. I did find it hard to stay connected to the book - I didn't put it at the top of my priority list of things to do, so it took me awhile to get through it. However, I felt completely connected to the characters and was interested in their stories. I placed myself in Isabel's place a lot, trying to think how I would feel if my husband up and disappeared one day. I just felt so much empathy for her.

Sometimes the book wo More...

Die For You by Lisa Unger is the story of an author, Isabel Raine, whose husband disappears and she launches into her own investigation to figure out what happened. Fiction writers make pretty good detectives. She loves her husband and does not hesitate to go looking for him even though it puts her in great danger. Die For You is a fast-paced novel about trust, love, marriage, forgiveness, betrayal and identity theft.

This is one of those books that is difficult to put down because More...

Okay, to start with, normally when you read a book you like the main character or at least understand him/her. I very much disliked Isabelle. Her every decision was stupid, naive and completely selfish. She puts her family in jeopardy just because she wants to know why? I could understand, disagree with but understand her putting herself in jeopardy, but to risk her family?? Even after her stepfather is almost killed, it doesn't stop her. Her own husband, h More...

Such a fun book. I was looking for something to read on the flight home from NYC (I'm terrified of flying) and knew I needed something fast-paced. I love suspense stories. Unger does a great job with the story and alternating points of view. I particularly liked her insight into writing. One of the characters is a writer and she talks about her hypersensitivity to detail and body language and how she feels outside of life most of the time. Needless to say, I could relate to that.

It's More...

To be honest this book has left me totally confused. I finished ‘Die for You’ a few days ago, but thought I should wait to see if I could gain some perspective about this story before attempting this review. But here I am a few days later, and I’m still not sure about this one.

I’m not a new reader to Lisa Unger, having read ‘Black Out’ last year and really enjoying it. But ‘Die for You’ was a complete struggle to get through after the first few chapters. At first I sympathized with More...

Maybe I should have read this book instead of listening to it on CD, as the narrator's voice drove me nuts most of the time throughout. Every line of dialogue was enunciated as if the speaker was either (#1) in serious physical pain or (#2) distraught for some imagined dramatic effect.

The story was interesting enough, although I couldn't buy the fact that some seemingly "with it" woman such as Isabel was totally daft in letting her husband control every monetary aspect of More...

I am still reading this book. I will not post what happened because I am sure you can go to the dozens of other responses and find out what happened through them. The synopsis seemed interesting so I decided to start reading it. The storyline was interesting but not as interesting to keep me going.

This is one of those that I can see becoming a movie with some A-star actors and actresses. I feel that the character development was nice but I am kind of biased for books that have a tou More...

Isabel Raine is a famous writer who seems to have everything: a handsome and successful husband, a flourishing career, and a loving family. One morning, Isabel's husband, Marcus, dissapears, and the trappings of her safe world begin to unravel around her.

Lisa Unger wraps her story around a familiar theme - a husband with a secret life and the wronged wife who risks her life to find out the truth. What makes this book engaging is that the author manage to throw in likeable characters More...

Wow! This was the 1st book by Lisa Unger that I have read. It was a GREAT book. I picked the book up and then put it down, read the back cover, and decided I'd try it. It ended up being a great read, so I was happy that I kept it. I read it in one sitting. "Die for You" had me on the edge of my seat.

This is almost a five star book for me. I'm so glad I picked it up at the airport having read Harlan Coben's endorsement of Unger. The only problem I'm having is that I cannot determine my reason for my obsession with this book. I think it's because the writing is some of the best I've read regarding loss, despair, and betrayal. It might however be because those are feelings I identify with very easily and feel very deeply. In addition, the plot was not too far off from something I experien More...

Just a so-so thriller. I found the constant switching between the main character's first person POV and the other characters' third person POVs interrupted the flow. So did the timeline - it jumps around quite a bit. The writing also tends to veer off into moments of, well, philosophical reflection on might call it? Although that might be a bit too strong a term - the characters ruminate on the meaning of the situation or experience they're currently engaged in, which don't add much to the s More...

This is a story of betrayal, forgiveness and suicide. The incredible love that Isabel has for her husband, only to find out that he's not who he says he is, is almost unbearable. Even for the reader.

There are so many characters in this story. I found that I liked many of them, and of course disliked the villains. Detective Grady Crow is an awesome character. He's even keel, even in the most bizarre of circumstances. He keeps his head, and still has his own life going on in the backg More...

She calls the police who tell her "men leave all the time"; racing to his office, she finds herself in the middle of an FBI raid. Hours later she awakens in a hospital with a concussion and by her side, a homicide detective. [Marcus isn't Marcus Raine, not the real one:]
Isabel won't rest until she finds out what is happening. In the process, she discovers many untruths and a few truths. More...

There are a bunch of things about this book. the storyline is great if not intriguing, however the writing style in the first 1/2-3/4 of the book is such that it moves slow. As a result it took me a while to really get into the book. The first portion of the book contains a lot of unclear shifts between current story/flashbacks/different characters/introspective thoughts. There wasn't much dialogue or action and it made the book hard to follow. I spent much of this time confused as to what was More...

It's what I call a "late starter." But even after 100 pages, it never really takes off for me. The writing isn't all bad but it is flat and even elementary in some places, especially in her dialogue; the characters have no depth, no passion. People's "centers" have too much prominance and I still can't picture "palms up." Up where, how? The editing is atrocious, not only in the text but in at least one glaring anachronism when the little shops are filled with " More...

Loved this, again Unger did not dissapoint. There is some swearing, not a lot but enough that I feel I ought to forwarn for those of my friends who would rather avoid it (hence the three stars and not four). I'm impressed with Unger's characters and her ability to draw me into her plot. I couldn't put this down and was sad when it was done. The author also has a way of bringing her stories to an end that is satisfying but not along the lines of a nice neat little package (not sure if that makes More...

What a gripping read! I've never read Unger before, but I'm tempted to start. I thought it was pitch perfect, suspense-wise, until the last third of the book, and then Unger was adding in too many emotional back stories of side characters which I thought took away from the main action. The most compelling story was the central one--Izzy, a writer, is married to software developer Marcus, and one morning he goes missing. Frantic, she tracks down all possible leads and realizes that Czech-born More...
