Text Summary
Beginning with the marriage of Anne Frank’s parents, Edith and Otto Frank, and ending with Otto Frank’s survival and publication of his daughter’s diary, Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colon depict the life of Anne Frank, the horrific events of the Holocaust, and the legacy that Anne Frank and her family leave behind. As a child, Anne Frank was a charming, smiley, free-spirited girl whose laugh had the ability to bring “sunshine” to those around her. As she grew older, Anne Frank’s pass More...

This graphic biography compellingly depicts the life and legacy of Anne Frank. Some Frank family history, some broader historical context, Anne’s childhood leading up to World War Two, the span of her diary, and afterward are all within the scope of this book. The broader historical context of Anne’s time is chronologically interwoven in her life, which is again presented in a chronology section. The Anne Frank House Authorization of this book ensures its accuracy. Speech and thought balloon

I never would have thought that I would encounter the "The Diary of Anne Frank" in comic book format. For a book rooted in such a horrific period in time, the topic seems almost off limits to a graphic novel, but I must admit that I was thoroughly impressed with the level of tact and skill that Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colon employed in "Anne Frank: The Anne Frank House Authorized Graphic Biography". Their version of the story provide a new level of depth and emotion by providi

Everybody knows who Anne Frank is but not everybody knows how her life really was. In the graphic biography Anne Frank, it talks about her life beginning with her family history and continuing on with her early childhood into her experiences hiding during World War II. The story starts by explaining her family tree and then talks about the background of the war. Anne lived in Amsterdam and had a happy childhood. She had a good relationship with her father but didn’t get along with her mom. A

In many ways, this graphic biography was easier to read than Anne Frank's original diary. One reason was that she was still learning her craft as a writer. The other is that, very reasonably, her writings included her biases as a young teen girl. Everything is filtered through those. The book does draw upon Anne Frank's writing, though, and focuses on her desire to become a writer, and how this led to the diary.

The Diary of Anne Frank was one of the first books I remember reading that left a significant impression on me. This version of her story is equally moving. It goes beyond the diary, including the family's history as well as the events leading up to the war and during the war. Also included is how Otto Frank brought her words to the world. All this is done in the format of graphic nonfiction that is well researched and respectfully presented by its authors.

Anne Frank is no stranger to us. We all know about how she hid with her family and four others in a secret annex in Netherlands during the infamous Holocaust, for two years. Whether or not we have actually read or loved her diary, none of us would deny that she went through a harrowing experience - just as million other Jews, victimized simply because of their faith. But in so many ways, Anne has become a symbol of that period chiefly because she was just fifteen when she died (murdered is what

The graphic novel Anne Frank by Sid Jacobs was the first book I read because I wanted to get something more informational and historical out of the way. I was surprised at how much a learned about Anne Frank’s life that I didn’t know before. The way she was brought up made her who she was when she reached the Annex. The Annex is where her family and she were hiding out. I always thought that she ended up passing away from being found by Nazi’s. It turned out she was sent to a concentration

The Holocaust was a horrible part in the history of the world. This graphic novel tells the story in pictures of Anne Frank trying to live through World War II and the Holocaust. The story starts with telling about her dad's past and where he worked and whatnot. Then it gets into the details of Adolf Hitler taking over Germany with his Nazis, Anne's family being forced to go into hiding at Otto's (Anne's Father) office in his spice factory. They hide in the Annex above the working area. They sta

The facts and information in this graphic novel are great. I've read the Diary of Anne Frank three times (twice for myself and once for school) and from this biography I learned a lot of new details about Anne's life prior to when her family went into hiding. The book starts when Anne's parents marry and continues until her father's death in 1980.

I didn't expect to learn anything new, or even to be touched very deeply by this book (being that I know the subject matter so thoroughly -- having read the diary many times, and otherwise immersed myself in background material for the last 42 years). I was wrong. Somehow, the drawings of the familiar photographs renewed their emotional impact for me. Somehow, the drawings of the photographs of Nazi criminals, and the other instances of historical information and context, made it much more pe

Having always had an interest in World War II and the Holocaust I was excited when my friend Adam found this graphic novel sitting on a table in Barnes and Noble. During my graphic novel kick I asked Adam if I could borrow it, to which he responded of course!

A biography told in graphic format, ANNE FRANK, tells the story of Anne's life from her birth, to her life in the Secret Annex, to her tragic death in a Nazi concentration camp, to the lasting legacy of her diary. I wasn't sure that the comic format would be an appropriate way to showcase Anne's life, since some artist's styles are too campy. Not so, with this one. There's an adjustment in style when switching from life in the Secret Annex to updating major events in Nazi Germany and the war. T

Don't underestimate the power of this book on the merits that it is a graphic novel. While this book will be shelved in the young adult section of most libraries, I highly recommend it to readers of all ages and backgrounds. Many people are familiar with the story of Anne Frank and her family through her world renowned diary, and this graphic novel makes the perfect supplement, expanding on Anne's story with accurate historical facts.

This was a fantastic portrayal of the Anne Frank memoir. I am a truly big fan of graphic novels and this one has to be one of my favorites; its so much nicer to see the book (after seeing it firstly in your head while reading) in picture form!
Well done Sid Jacobson! ;)
If you have read this, and enjoyed it (for some reason BEFORE the actual book) you will probably enjoy the book , it is much more detailed and has a lot more back story.

I really enjoyed this graphic biography of Anne Frank and her family. The book covers more than just Anne Frank herself...it covers her family and friends as well. It also provides the context to Anne's life (Nazi rise to power, WW2 battles that the family followed, etc.) It's a great refresher of the history of the events surrounding Anne's life.

This is a graphic novel by Sidney Jacobson about Anne Frank’s life starting with her parent’s early lives and ending with their final fates, including Otto’s death in 1980. Anne Frank is the famous teen diary writer who lived in hiding with her family so as to avoid being sent to a concentration camp. The artwork is full color and easy to follow, providing historical information giving background information about the Depression and the rise of the Nazi party. Adults and children will both li

This graphic biography chronicles the life of the Nazi movement (beginning with Germany in WWI) and its rise to power, and the life of Anne Frank (beginning with her parent's courtship) and her development from carefree girlhood to pensive adolescent, culminating with the Armistice and Anne's death at Auschwitz, just a few weeks before the end of WWII.

Really enjoyed this work. At first it was hard to imagine this work in graphic novel format but the illustrations and writing work well together. At times it was a bit confusing with the multiple dialogue boxes but the story, though not new , is fresh and compelling. It briefly tells the story of Anne's parents' lives and provides a historical backdrop of the situation in Germany and the world. Beautifully told and deeply moving.

YES YES YES
6 star book
this being in graphic form and more complete than the "secret annex" is amazing.
drawings of Anne and Margot playing are next to ones of hitler. there is an illo of Anne and her father walking in front of a store w/a "no jews allowed" sign in the window. much of the diary and their lives after capture are illustrated.
this book is a gift to the world. it should be in your public and school library.

This sequential art version of the Anne Frank story is quite literally a graphic depiction of the brutality of the times. Anne's story, although familiar to all of us, takes on a new slant in this format. It is a wonder for historians and readers alike to 'hear' Anne's own words through her diary.
Would be a great companion work to Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl to be used as a curriculum tool.

(in case you haven't noticed) i have a thing for graphic novels relating to world war 2.
this particular title is a mixed bag-
good:
color artwork, feast for the eyes
the additional perspective of what was happening during the war as anne wrote. she mentions some things in her diary but wasn't aware of everything (she couldn't be).
additional info about what happened to the residents of the secret annex after they were arrested
bad:
the dialogue. oh god More...

I'm adding this to my many books about Anne. I think reluctant readers would love this and there are wonderful visuals with brief kid friendly historical explanations throughout. What I really liked is the continuation of Anne's story after the arrest and after Otto Frank's release from the camps. If you teach Anne Frank, or are interested in her or the Holocaust, I would highly suggest reading this.

I appreciate this book as a biography, but it does not have much merit as a graphic work. Sure, it has graphics that depict scenes, but the book does not use graphics to show that which has not been described in the text. This work fleshes out Anne's diary to provide more context and background on who she is as a person; however, the real power is in reading her diary, for which this is no substitute.

This is an excellent supplementary bio for people reading Anne's diary to also read. The illustrations work well to place the history and context of what was happening. Also it's impossible to escape the horror of what happened with illustrations to accompany the timeline. An important addition to the Anne Frank cannon.

This is a great graphic novel to introduce students to biographies. I liked that author started with much earlier in Anne Frank's life as well as gave historical information about what was going on in the world to help understand the world she and her family lived in before and during the family hiding in the annex.

I think the drawings in this graphic biography kind of cheapened Anne's legacy. It was filled with an easy to follow time line and lots of pre-journal and post-journal history, though. I can see how this would be helpful and engaging for readers who are looking for an easier to read recap of her life.

Great biography of Anne Frank's life. This is a great way to introduce different types of biographies in literature. There are tons of books, non fiction, fiction, and graphic novels on Anne Frank and about the Holocaust. You can use Number the Stars in teaching Holocaust.

This very comprehensive graphic biography of Anne Frank depicts not only Anne but her immediate family as they move from Germany to The Netherlands, go into hiding, and are ultimately found and sent to concentration camps. This book tells the story in a well-explained historical context, detailing pertinent events that took place within the timeline.
