01/18/13: Revised rating after a couple of years of reading m/m: from 2 to 3.

I am very conflicted because I liked the way Jayden and Ethan got together and I sort of liked the two main characters, so much that I want to read the sequel, but the book didn't really satisfy me.

First of all, I think Jayden's acceptance of Ethan as a master was too fast. The words he spoke - especially "Yes, Master Ethan" at the end of their first encounter - were so unexpected. I don't expect someone who has not eve...more

Ethan, you delicious devilish Dom! Oh how I dream about you. Wow. I'm very impressed with this BDSM novel as it is very sweet and shows quite a bit of education. I wish all the BDSM communities were this way. Well, this is a fictional story so I can only dream and fantasize.

This story was just the right sweetness and tartness. Ethan is a complicated Dom who has his own demons to wrestle. We don't really know the full story about Ethan until close to 2/3 of the way through the story. This story w...more

I just thought that this book was OK. I felt like there was too much going on for it to have ended the way that it did. I felt very unfufilled at the end. There is supposedly a continuation, and I will likely read it to get a sense of what happened.

As far as the smut factor, the book was very hot as far as sex scenes and BDSM sessions go, but the story was lacking.

Also, I believe that I have said this before, there were spelling errors in the book. There was a big one where instead of using the...more

Sometimes, I thought it was an excellent novel, but at other times, I was bored enough to move on to other activities and to read another complete novel before returning to this book. Yes, there is a good psychological study of the characters, but why the authors always describe the Doms as having been abused children? I have known several dominants and they were all very psychologically strong. So please, stop describing them as damned sick! It was the same in Fifty Shades of Grey (which, incid...more

I loved this book! I enjoyed the journey the characters experienced together and individually.

When I think of doms and subs, I always think they just start out that way, but this story paints a very different picture of the process and I thought it was very fun and interesting...not to mention hot and erotic!

i am rating this as 1 star because i despise being misled about the contents of a book so that i buy it with false expectations. i am not opposed to female characters (no, in fact i rather enjoy strong/interesting female characters), but i do NOT enjoy them as lead characters in my supposed m/m erotica, and especially not in BDSM. heck, in this book the woman has a more intimate relationship with the sub than he has with the dom. i didn't finish -- not because the writing was bad (it's quite goo...more

I would be kinda mad if I paid for this book. I don't mind porn with a plot if the plot is as good as the porn but in this case the plot was not as good.

Twists felt as if they came out of nowhere. I didn't feel any connection with the relationship between the 3 main characters outside of the playroom. I'm supposed to believe that ethan, jayden and lexi have somehow become friends but there aren't many scenes that show them building that relationship. I suppose the scenes in new york were suppos...more

ayden is in his final year in college and finds himself looking for an apartment to rent. He couldn't stand the circus in the dorms and he loves his sister Kimberly, but sleeping on couch got old real fast. After reading an add looking for a roommate he thinks it is an answer to his prayers. The first time Jayden meets Ethan everything works out well. The only hitch is that there is one room that Jayden isn't allowed to see and of course the temptation eventually is too great, especially after E...more

I have so much respect for this book and its sequel that I have had a hard time putting what I think into words.

On one hand, I had an immediate reaction between "what I would do" versus "what the characters do." As you'll see from some of the other reviews, Jayden is given a choice ... stay and submit or leave the house. His inner dialogue splits his decision so equally that the only reason we know he will stay is that it would have been a very short book had he decided to leave.

On the other ha...more

This review is for all 3 books in the series. I think it's a better story if all 3 books are read as one.
I am not sure I would have read this story if I knew what it was about. However, even after knowing, and even though I skimmed large parts of it, I still found it to be a very compelling and emotional read. The first book gives you the story from Jayden's point of view and the second is from Ethan's POV. The 2nd book also looks back at some things that happened in the first story and explains

If I was an author of erotic fiction I would be very pissed off if the cover of my novel had a guy on it with zits all over his shoulders. That just doesn't scream erotic.
If I was an author of any book I would be very pissed off if the editing was substandard and the text was littered with spelling errors. That just doesn't scream professional.
I am not an author. I am a reader though and those are things that would turn me away from buying the book. Thankfully I was privy to receiving a free cop...more

I was recommended to read this book a while back and I finally got round to it. I have to say that I was intrigued at first, the characters were written so well I needed to find out more about them.

However, I have to say the BDSM content made me feel very uncomfortable at times as it was more prominent than the character development. This is not a negative to the book though as I knew it would be in there, I chose to read it and in no way does it affect my rating. However, certain elements of th...more

I found this book to be, well not sure what to say about it . I loved it, but at times it tore me to shreds. I can see so much of why Ethan is the way he is, and I can understand why he lives the way he does. His life is so filled with control, and its the only thing that keeps him going. Jayden is a little harder for me. He seemed to take to this life quite quickly, and he was perfect in every way for Ethan. He has to make some tough choices, but its the right thing in the end. Lexi is great sh...more

I don't think I realized this was MMF, or at least not as much as it was. The ending left me unsatisfied although I know that life isn't always able to be tied up in a neat bow. The BDSM aspects were well written and sexy.

College student, Jayden, needs a place to live. He finds the perfect house where he can be roomies with a nice looking man. There is only one rule- a forbidden room he must not enter. Of course, the temptations of the room prove to be too much and Jayden is caught. Faced with an ultimatum - submit to his landlord or leave Jayden choses to submit.

The characters in this story all come loaded with baggage and the story is wound around the difficulties the face in dealing with that baggage.

A painfully beautiful book with flawed characters and intense emotion. You must read both The Forbidden Room and A House of Cards in order to experience the entire story.

Ethan is an extremely tortured soul and I fell in love with him immediately. Barnaby paints a vivid picture of his demons as well as his journey of releasing them and experiencing love for the first time.

I hope Barnaby will continue Ethan and Jayden's story with more books in the future. I feel like they only found happiness at...more

Firstly ignore that shitty cover. What you are about to read is H.O.T seriously freaking off the charts VOLCANIC!
This book was so erotically attractive to me. Arousing, provocative, sensual and down right carnal. At times it was even wickedly depraved and salacious.
Yes it's BDSM erotica with but for me the edge play was more focused on the B&D rather than the S&M (thank god)There is a lot of sex in this novel and I mean A LOT, but whereas usually with this amount of sex I become bored a...more

I loved this book by J.P.Barnaby, which has a strong well paced story line, characters that are well developed that the reader quickly develops an affinity with; you feel as if you are there like a silent witness, everything is so clearly described. Jayden in his graduate year needs independence from parental financial support and his college digs, he applies and passes an interview to rent a floor of Dr. Ethan Bryant's lovely home, all bar one room that is Forbidden to him. He observes Ethan ta...more

This is my first book by J.P. Barnaby and it came highly recommended. By no means is the book a bad one, it just left me sad and none to happy. I enjoyed Jayden's journey into this new lifestyle and the relationships he develops along the way.

I loved the chemistry between the characters and the scenes they created and even enjoyed the scenes between Jayden and Lexi. I just didn't get Jayden. I though he was a selfish brat who wanted his cake and eat it too. At times, I felt like he used Ethan an...more

Hmm. Mixed feelings about this one. Good writing, despite some typos. I'm not a fan of m/f or m/m/f so I found the scenes with the girls a little... jarring, almost. It was a little heavier on the smut than felt necessary, but, at the same time, some of those scenes were incredibly hot. If I were rating it just for erotic value, it'd be an easy five star read. The plot is engaging and the characters are pretty well done, so, for me, I would've preferred more of that over a few of the sex scenes....more

Thought that the story was pretty good. Think that certain scenes were glossed over and not sure why, specifically closure scenes, they just kind of rounded up a bit too neat, not really believable in my head. Wished the ending was a little different.

I'm glad that I found out after reading most of the story that this was written based off of the twilight characters(not that I hated those but it's apples and oranges, you know?). I think it would have possibly turned me off. Instead I had already...more

There was so much emotion in this book. I could not put it down. All the characters feelings and responses to their lifes. I was so impressed with the author's descriptions of everything. How it doesn't matter the sex of the person you love just who they are as a person. It was very beautiful. When I was young I was pretty strick in my thoughts of people being gay was wrong. But as I have grown up I realize it is not a choice and that love is better then hate. What could be wrong with love.

I come across so much dismal writing these days, not only of the M/M and romance and erotica genres, but what the mainstream publishers hawk as well, that to read something that flows nicely with solid prose, I must give five stars. Perhaps five years ago, when this novel was written, I'd given it three. Still, a good effort that shows tremendous gifts as a story teller--and do I dare use the term, artist?

I never found myself bored enough to set the novel down, unless I had life's pressing issue...more

Don't let the cover mislead you. Great male/male interactions but also some very steamy male/female scenes. Very nice descriptions of the 'dungeon'. The only negative comment I have is that some of the characters are emotionally 'damaged' and this is given as the reason they came to the bdsm lifestyle. It perpetuates the stereotype that bdsm practitioners are born of some prior trauma in their pasts. For a great many of us, this is not the case. We are well-adjusted, average folks who simply enj...more

I was unsure about reading this as I tend to like my BDSM books as being M/M only and there is a definite female element to this book but I continued reading and I am so glad that I did. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved Ethan and Jayden and actually liked Lexie as well. I liked their interactions and I thought the story interesting and well written. I thought that the BDSM scenes were well written and believable. Highly recommended!

J.P.'s writing has such emotion that althought I am not a big BDSM fan I liked this book so much.

This book is full of questions and some answers and i truly hope I get to experience the answers to all of them. I am addicted to lexi, Ethan, and Jaydens relationship and I definitely cryed in several parts of this book. I Liked it so much and have now gotten everything of JP's to read in the future.

I just finished reading The forbidden room by J.P Barbaby. At times I did not really like the book. Ethan (the Dom) has major issues. It also has a female in the group. I didn't care for reading about her. I soon did fall in love with the character. I am planning on giving it high markes. There is another book, but I did not find it on Kindle. I will look other places

I read this book for the first time a few years ago and it's still a book I read often. As much as I loved the Little Boy Lost series by J.P. Barnaby, this book remains my favourite :-) I think what I love most about it is the emotions behind the characters and going through the journey with Jayden. I highly recommend this book!

Loved this book. A look into a total different perception on everything. We had M/M to M/M/F. There was a male dom and a male sub and a female sub. Then there was threesome. Started by training a sub to training as a dom. We even had a female dom. Very interesting and some scenes very HOT!!!!
A different look into the BDSM life. I enjoyed the book a lot.

OK....I am changing my review in fairness to the author. It is not her fault that I have the hangups that I do. I did not enjoy the way this book ended.....but it was a very good read. Having found out that there is more to Master Ethan I am much happier. Sorry....I get attached to the characters...can't help it. I am looking forward to reading more by this author....and keeping my fingers crossed that she will do right my HEA hangups

An award-winning, best-selling novelist of over a dozen books, J. P. Barnaby is a proud member of the GLBT community both online and in her small town on the outskirts of Chicago. A member of Mensa, she is often described as brilliant but troubled, sweet but introverted and talented but deviant. She spends her days writing software and her nights writing erotica which is, of course, far more inter...more
