What happens when fate links the destiny of a Pennsylvania grandmother of Mennonite heritage with a Las Vegas cocktail waitress? For Las Vegas widow Nan, memories of a Pennsylvania Dutch childhood are an ache from the distant past, a painful memory of abandoned roots and lost connections. Does life offer any real second choices and chances?

When the end comes, it is often just the beginning….

Ruth loses both her brother-in-law to a terrible disease and her husband in a fatal accident all in the same day. With no family to turn to, her mother-in-law Naomi becomes her only refuge.

The three women, Naomi and her daughter-in-laws Ruth and Orpah, were a mess. Their combined grief was heavy and burdensome long after the services passed. Money was scarce. Naomi’s husband had died just three years previous and nearly ...more

This is the modern retelling of the story of Ruth from the Bible. I really enjoyed this book and related to the characters and the story very well. Naomi is a bitter widow who lives in a tiny apartment in Vegas (Sin City) and only has her two sons and daughter in laws to count as blessings in her life. When both sons unexpectedly die Naomi feels she must go back to her roots and the only time of real happiness in her whole life, her childhood growing up in Amish counrty. Her daughter in law Ruth...more

I wanted to like this book more. I felt it was somewhat shallow, and the authors didn't know very much about Mennonites. It is a retelling of the Book of Ruth. The "far country" is Las Vegas and Moab, UT. In Utah, the only "Mormons" presented are polygamous, of course, since this is written by Evangelicals. Ruth is a cocktail waitress in Vegas and marries a son of a Naomi who abandons her Mennonite roots. Then the sons die and Ruth goes with Naomi. The authors spend 2/3...more

This is a modern day retelling of the book of Ruth from the Bible. Naomi and Ruth travel from Las Vegas, Nevada back to Naomi's hometown in Pennsylvania back to her Pennsylvania Dutch roots. The names of the characters that are mentioned in the Bible are either the same names are close to the same names, even Boaz. Both Ruth and Naomi find their way to God in this book. This is a good modernization of the Book of Ruth. There is even mention of Boaz's parents in the book which is similar to ...more

Really, more like 1 1/2 stars......I really wanted to like this book; the idea is so cool (a modern retelling of the biblical story of Ruth), and the first chapter was awesome. But after that, it just didn't do it for me. It got too implausable, the religious aspects jumped forward too fast and the relationships between everyone except Ruth and Naomi were too underdeveloped. Which is too bad...it could have been a cool book.

i was pleasantly surprised with this book. the beginning was slow but sort of interesting. slow makes me want to put a book down but i held tight. I was pleased with the ending. i love happy endings. i don't want to give anything away for one who might want to read this. BUT i ended up feeling good in my soul after reading, stay with it. This book is true for many of us and has a very positive and encouraging message. that is all, thank you :)

I was a little skeptical reading this as it is written by a man, from a woman's point of view, which you could tell, but...it's wasn't horribly done like some are. I loved reading about places I love and have been and being able to see in my head exactly where things actually are, like Bethlehem Steel and south Bethlehem, Hotel Bethlehem. These places are real to me, as are Moab and Vegas. Even Lancaster County...I even am PA Dutch...so it was fun for me. I also liked how it was all brought ...more

Nearly perfect retelling of the Biblical story of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz.

If you're a Christian, you'll find a fresh perspective on ancient themes. If not, the story may feel forced and hokey.

Ruth is my favorite story from the Bible, and this modern retelling did not meet my expectations. It is worth reading for anyone interested in Christianity but do not use it as a staple for real Biblical truth.
Melissa
It was okay. Ruth & Naomi are on a road trip for most of the book - & i felt like it dragged just like a road trip does! But once they got where they were going, it got a lot better!
Cherie
The only interesting aspect of this book were the geographical ties to the Biblical Story of Ruth. The characters were hollow and the story was, at times, ridiculous.

I must admit that I had to set this one down twice before I was able to finish it. It started a little slow but it did turn out as a nice retelling of the story of Ruth.

It was a good story, but at times, the connection to the Biblical account made it a little less believable (i.e. all the same names). Overall, I enjoyed it.

From the pit to the palace. A lovely read for GPs, a tale reminiscent of the things God has prepared for them that love Him, no matter what the origin.

I loved this book. What a wonderful tale. Let's have a movie too. I did not want it to end. Many of you will also enjoy this, especially if you are from PA and have traveled the I-70. ENJOY!!!

This book grew onme. By the end I was glad I had read it and would recommend it. Itis a modern day telling of the Bible story of Ruth.

This. Book. Sucks.

The dialogue is unrealistic, and one of my huge peeves with it was that the author shows you, for example, that Ruth likes referencing pop culture, and then TELLS you. It got on my nerves. The information that Naomi gave about the Mennonite culture sounded as though it was lifted straight from Wikipedia. And it's so unsubtle with the mental-healing-physical-journey theme.

This is a man writing a woman's story. If they'd done it well, I wouldn't be complai...more

Great book. This modern day version of the Bible story of Ruth was wonderfully written. This was a quick read.

I grew up New Order Mennonite. Very obvious that Tenney did not bother to research the Mennonites.
Donna
I learned more about the Mennonite and Amish religion that I hadn't been aware of before. Very good book.
Cherie
What a delightful read! I would love to see this book made into a movie.

The Road Home is supposedly a modern telling of the Ruth story from the Bible. However, it seems to be more about a crazy road trip, with a bit at the end to tie together all of the main plot points in an unreasonably quick and convenient way. The characters were hard to connect to and the story was just not written well. Sorry Tommy Tenney... I don't think I'd read any other books by this author.

I loved this. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it.
Michael
A modern re-telling of the Biblical story of Ruth that has its moments when it absolutely works and its moments when you feel like the authors are trying too hard. It does have some slow spots, but the timeless story of redemption is well done.

It did make me yearn for the orignal story in the Bible, which I went back and read.

Recommends it for: Adults
This book is a good spin on an old biblical story with a modern day twist. The authors gives a new insight on how the life of Ruth can be viewed through contemporaries eye and give a better understanding on how life can be bettered through faith. It is a great story with contemporary problems and excitment for the causual reader.

Recommends it for: anyone
This book is a modern retelling of the story of Ruth in the bible. Amazing real life story driving home the love Ruth has for her mother in law and how God awards her faithfulness.

I could not put it down! It is a wonderful way to read this bible story without the "thee" and "thou" language. I would recommend it to anyone.

I think the story itself is sweet, although the writing is kind of slow. I felt like it could have been more vivid and probing, but given the characters, I can see how the authors didn't want to go to excess. It took me a long while to get "into" the storyline, but I was glad I did.
Nicole
This book is hard to put down. I hope to one day have my own story to share traveling cross-country!
Nori
A modern day Ruth and Naomi story. It makes you think what life would be like if you would translate some biblical stories into today's world. Very interesting but sometimes difficult as it deals with some harsh realities.
