Mr. Lunch, the professional bird-chasing dog, never expected his canoe trip to turn into a transatlantic doggie-paddle. And never did he imagine he'd wash ashore in Venice, where the streets are paved with water, and the plazas are paved with...PIGEONS! It's nothing less than the opportunity of a lifetime. This book holds a special place in my personal canon because it's the first picture book I read aloud to a group of kids, as a librarian, that allowed me to share their delight. Seibold (and Walsh)'s books are some of the weirdest out there, but because they're totally unapologetic and have absolutely no ulterior motives, they are, IMO, some of the best picture books around.

Once you've read this book 50 times, you can convert it to a song for your 2 year-old to the tune of "Yankee Doodle":

Mr. Lunch borrowed a canoe
And he went to Venice;
He chased the birds out of St. Mark's -
They were such a menace!

Mr. Lunch saw some boats
Including a rustbucket;
Mr. Lunch sailed back home,
And gave his canoe to the elephant!

I like Seibold's art, but I wasn't as fond of the Mr. Lunch books. They're cute, but they don't linger in my mind as great stories, the way Olive, the Other Reindeer does.

The illustrations are very cool and the narrative is quirky and fun. Mr. Lunch is a dog - and a professional at chasing pigeons.
