It is truly a vital field, central to the health of society, but it is often p ...more

He had me until he went into redistribution politics. The author believes that "justice" requires every human have equal health care. Maybe Cuba can be his world model. Otherwise a good book.

Epidemiology is the study of factors affecting the health and illness of populations. However, the purpose of the epidemiology is not just the passive study of those illnesses from a purely intellectual viewpoint, but rather coming up with strategies and means of preventing and controlling the disease outbreaks. An excellent cursory view of what epidemiology is, what it aims to do, and how it achieves those aims.

Another solid entry in the Very Short series from Oxford, this is a crash course in the field of epidemiology--the study of health in populations. After a historical background, including the careers of pioneers like Snow, Semmelweis and Goldberger, the book lays out the vocabulary and parameters of the design, implementation and outcomes of studies, using diabetes as a common theme to illustrate investigations ranging from chemistry to genetics to social factors, and the ways in which this info ...more
Ugh
A Very Short and in my opinion very good introduction to edpidemiology. That's a judgement you could only really make if you knew a lot more about epidemiology than I do, but it's very interesting and readable, and there's a lot of return for your minimal effort. One or two sections could be a little clearer, and there are a couple of mistakes that aren't very helpful - one of them in a demonstration of how to do a calculation - but aside from that I thought it was pretty darn good.

The book is a primer and the majority of concepts are well explained. Some very interested case studies are mentioned.
