Brilliant addition to the Tunnels series. Very fast paced and action heavy, it was a quick read and better than the book that came before (Freefall, which was also excellent).
This book is an excellent addition to the Tunnels series. It follows on from 'Tunnels' 'Deeper' and 'Freefall'.
'Closer' is as much a page-turner as the other three and it is slightly easier to read and enjoy. This could be partially related to the plot being interchanged between different members in the group, as well as d...more

Ages 10-14. Book 4 of the Tunnel series. In this futuristic world, Will, Elliott and Dr. Burrows have left Rebecca One for dead and have taken a "journey to the center of the earth", where they've discovered pyramids and vestiges of an early civilization. Chester is taken hostage by crazy Martha on their journey Topsoil (aboveground), and must escape to find his parents. Drake, taken for dead, has made an alliance with Elliott's father, a Styx (the enemy) who claims to be against the Styx's camp...more
I guess maybe you had to have read the first books in the series. I like a page-turner fantasy, especially an alternate-world type. This one was about a race of people who live way below the surface of the earth and tunnel up to have a hand in the course of world events. I picked the book up at our local library and so it was very much like coming into the last part of the last season of a series. There were lots of cuts to different scenes, lots of back story, and lots of tying of loose ends th...more

I had been waiting for months for the fourth installment of the Tunnels series, "Closer", to be released.
And finally it has.
I read the book in a couple of days, so caught up was I in the ever-developing story of Will and friends.
The previous three novels have been a joy for me, pure ecstasy.
I adore the whole world Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams have spun from their creative imaginations and I am so glad I have had the privilege of seeing the plot bloom and thrive, pulsate with excitement and...more

"Closer," (the fourth installment in the "Tunnels" series) is probably the best one since the very first book, Tunnels (also the name of the book series). In the series, protagonists Will Burrows and Chester discover an hidden hole outside Will's house, which they explore and eventually leads them to a massive underground city called The Colony. From there, Will and Chester must adapt to the new life there while trying to find a way back home. In...more

Imagine a pile of snow blowing up in your face. That's what reading Closer is like.
Why snow? Because if snow did happen to blow up in your face one day, you'd probably think, "What the--? Snow doesn't do that!! That can't happen!!" And while reading this entire book, you're bound to think the same: "What the--? That can't happen! That did not just happen!" Well, it did. In the form of pure awesomeness.

The story picks up following the events of Freefall. In the world with its own sun in the center of the Earth, the Rebecca twins, they both look exactly the same had dived into a pool in order to escape an explosion set off by Will and Elliott, the evil leaders and eventually are able to survive by breathing air they find trapped in the roof of some underground tunnels. Chester and Martha return. Chester is basically the big brother of Martha. They can both protect them selfs its just Chester ha...more
It was great to finally get the last book (but is it REALLY the last book?) in the series. This was a page turner, you can't really put it down without feeling some kind of pain because you want to know what's happening next. I felt wholly disappointed at the ending however. Without spoiling it for everyone, I was greatly disappointed in the ending, and see how they could have "book #5". I really hope they don't add insult to injury thought. Some of the things come full circle here, but for the...more
I really did like this book a lot. Action, great characters. It has been so long since I read the first three in this series there was a lot of background I had forgotten but much of it was mentioned in this volume so it helped to bring me up to speed. Main characters, Will, Chester and Elliott have survived, barely, to help others try to save the planet from the underground dwellers called the Styx. But, to continue to survive they must involve other Topsoilers who they must trust to keep their...more

Ugh... as expected, they end the book with a cliffhanger >,<
This makes me hesitate to read the 5th book, Spiral, because I know another cliffhanger will be lurking...heheh.
Anyway, overall, I like this book. I like the plot and the pace and the characters, and the character I like the most is Mrs. Celia Burrows! Yep; it's hard not to fancy her and her newly acquired ability. If you despise her in the first book, well, you should know that she changes a lot. She's more confident and wise. I...more

It has been a long time since I read the three earlier books in the series and I was afraid I might not remember enough but Mr. Gordon's prose was so good that it felt like I had just read the three others last week. Will and Chester's adventures continue and I was so happy to see Chester given more time to be developed as a character. More information about the Styx is revealed and the relationship between Elliot and the Styx known as Eddie is given. I simply couldn't put the book down and I en...more
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone with a weak stomach. I am not bothered by The Hunger Games at all, but this book made me feel nauseous. For those who have read the other books in the series, Martha and Chester make it Topsoil, but Martha goes crazy and forces Chester to eat Topsoilers without him knowing. The pretty detailed account of the bodies made me almost barf. All in all, it's a decent book, but not for those with a weak stomach.
I powered right through this thick book. The fourth installment of the Tunnels series, Closer continues the discovery of underground worlds, villains, alliances and unlikely heroes. The inner and outer worlds are more connected than anyone previously thought, and now the Styx are bringing the battle to the surface. Don't try to read this without reading the other books first -- it simply won't make any sense. But it's a good read if you've read the previous books already. Fair warning, it ends i...more

I've generally enjoyed this series so far, but with this book and the one before, I've had a hard time sympathizing with any of the characters. I know most sci-fi is plot-driven rather than character-driven, but I feel so disconnected from these characters at times that when one character dies in this book, I was actually glad to be rid of that person. The characters are flat, and some of the events of the last two novels seem unnecessary. I'm still not sure what the function of the Land of the...more
I have continued to enjoy the series and actually felt this one was a bit better than the last one, but I still feel like the characters are a bit flat or that they are just kind of annoying to a point. When certain characters died I wasn't really saddened as much as I was glad to get back to the story. I did like the addition of a new character or two but only because these characters showed more character than many of the more simplistic ones. I'm looking forwards to the end of the series thou...more
OH MY GOD! :|
Excellent YA novel, maybe even J but it's a bit intense sometimes and it's got higher vocabulary than a lot of J. It took a bit to get into this book since I hadn't read the previous book since it was published - there are so many story lines going on that it's hard to remember - so it's best to refresh your memory before starting this one. I hope I don't have to wait too long for the next in the series - #5 Spiral.
This is an extraordinary continuation of the tunnels series. It has to do with another world at the center of the earth inhabited by tree men and a race of Germans who went there during WWII. The Germans had an agreement with a race of people called the Styx who are intent on killing all "Topsoilers" (all who live on the surface of the earth, because they live below the surface). This agreement entailed assistance from the Germans but they don't know that there is much backstabbing going on on t...more

I think this book is really great, I mean its filled with action, suspense and tradegy its like you can almost picture that you're in some sort of movie. Every ending in this series makes you think of what might happens next. I wonder if Will would and the others would somehow save the Topsoilers from the Styx.
A world under our, Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams have returned with the book, CLoser, and it is more dangerous, more exciting, and more intense than ever. I could not put the book down and now I can't wait for the next book, Spiral. If you have read the past book, you will enjoy this one as well.

Roderick Gordon is the author of the Tunnels series of books. Born in 1960, he grew up in Highgate, North London, and eventually went to University College where he dabbled in genetics and listened to Joy Division. After graduating without the faintest idea what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, he spent some time in the wilderness when he played in a few bands, then somehow fell into a jo...more
