Brilliant addition to the Tunnels series. Very fast paced and action heavy, it was a quick read and better than the book that came before (Freefall, which was also excellent).

This book is an excellent addition to the Tunnels series. It follows on from 'Tunnels' 'Deeper' and 'Freefall'.

'Closer' is as much a page-turner as the other three and it is slightly easier to read and enjoy. This could be partially related to the plot being interchanged between different members in the group, as well as d...more

Es cierto que muchas de las acciones de los styx no están encaminadas por el camino del bien pero también es cierto que ellos lo único que quieren lograr es la salvación del planeta que comparten con los seres de la Superficie. Aquellos seres de la Superficie han acabado con el planeta Tierra y no son los únicos afectados, pero no por ello se les debe erradicar.

Como ven, el tema de los styx es algo delicado, y aun cuando en las reseñas anteriores he demostrado que no estoy de acuerdo con ellos y sus acciones, lo sucedido en esta entrega me hizo cambiar de parecer. No estoy a favor de lo que hace “cierto” viejo styx, como dice Eddie, pero también estoy en contra de que los seres de la Superficie destruyan el planeta sin medir las consecuencias.

El modo de escribir no ha sufrido mayor cambio. Sigue primando la descripción detallada de animales y lugares; se vuelve monótona en algunas páginas pero no es nada que unas cuantas escenas de acción no puedan mejorar.

Me ha encantado el nuevo personaje, Eddie, no me lo esperaba aunque me hizo pasar buenos momentos y como dice Drake: llegue a pensar que eras mi amigo. Llegue a pensar que sería un buen aliado hasta que decidió seguir del lado de los styx y abandonar a la resistencia, es una pena.

En cuanto a la señora Burrows tiene más protagonismo en este libro que en ninguno otro. Nos encontramos con un nuevo horizonte después de que se le hubieran aplicado las siete luces oscuras y la hubieran dejado en un estado vegetativo. Me ha gustado bastante el cambio que experimenta, las habilidades que descubre y el personaje es más llevadero.

El trío fantástico también es el triángulo amoroso más extraño que jamás haya leído; Elliot está en medio, sin saberlo, de una pelea adolescente entre Chester y Will, a veces se siente que prefiere al primero para después reír y sonreír con el segundo, no sé a donde quieran llegar Gordon y Williams pero espero la chica termine con la persona que espero.

Lo bueno, sigue la historia, no hay un cambio significativo en la forma de escritura y se hace un poco más activa la lectura con las escenas de acción.

Lo malo, es que el quinto libro Spiral apenas se ha publicado en el Reino Unido por lo que se tendrá que esperar cerca de un año o más para tener el quinto ejemplar de la saga; además Spiral sería el penúltimo libro de la saga por lo que serían seis libros en total. Para más información entren a MundoTúneles. Además mi edición es la primera por lo que vi varias erratas que, espero, sean corregidas en las próximas ediciones.

En resumen, es mi favorito de los cuatro publicados hasta ahora, un gran y hermoso 9.(less)

I guess maybe you had to have read the first books in the series. I like a page-turner fantasy, especially an alternate-world type. This one was about a race of people who live way below the surface of the earth and tunnel up to have a hand in the course of world events. There were lots of cuts to different scenes, lots of back story, and lots of tying of loose ends that didn't make much sense to me.

I don't hold that against the book. After all, what else could you expect when you get to the party so late? But I don't think I particularly want to read the earlier books. There was a tone that was slightly distasteful to me, like a macabre though somewhat clever video game. There weren't many moral distinctions between the "good guys" and the "bad guys" except that the bad guys were a little more gratuitously cruel and exploitative. The good guys were only cruel and exploitative when they felt justified in being so, which seems to flatten out the differences to me. The characters could never breathe for a minute, and this flattened them out and made them seem sort of thin as characters.

I liked the British tone and a sort of junior-highish flippancy which was a bit like Harry Potter (in fact, the book even refers to one character comparing his plight to Harry Potter's). But the plot was so action-packed and so short on nuance while being high in ambiguity that I think I would hesitate to give the book to the younger teen audience of HP. One example that sticks in my mind is of a situation where a boy finds he has inadvertently been a cannibal. It is so gruesome, but sort of slips past in the rocket velocity of the plot. That left a bad taste, if you will pardon that.

On the bright side, no real bad language at all and no sex -- there is a very mild romance but it is not developed at all. And the violence, though extreme and intense, was not the pornographic kind you come across in some books for adults and in horror movies, etc. It had that cartoony feeling, again, of some video games. The women characters are treated seriously -- often, in fact, they were the strongest people, whether for good or evil, and there wasn't a single girl or woman in the book that shrieked breathlessly and waited to be saved.

All in all -- very interesting concept, page-turning action, colorful characters, but not much depth besides the geographical depth of the below-earth scenario. (less)

I read the book in a couple of days, so caught up was I in the ever-developing story of Will and friends.

In the series, protagonists Will Burrows and Chester discover an hidden hole outside Will's house, which they explore and eventually leads them to a massive underground city called The Colony. From there, Will and Chester must adapt to the new life there while trying to find a way back home. In the process, they must stop the treacherous government called the Styx, who plan to release a mass virus called the Dominion back on Topsoil which will kill every human being living above the surface. And when Will finds out that not only was he really born in The Colony, but his sister Rebecca turns out to be a part of the Styx and has a twin sister, complicating things even more. At the start of Closer, we leave off from when Will, Chester, Will's father Dr. Burrows and new comrades Elliot and Drake attempt to kill Rebecca so they can control the Dominion. This attempt fails, as Will shoots her in the arm, but unknown to Will it turns out that she lives the assassination. Afterward, the Rebecca's find a hidden city call New Germany, where German soldiers have been secretly living since World War II. The Rebecca's force the New Germanians to help them and the Styx in an effort to stop the protagonists and acquire the Dominion. As time progresses, the four (as Drake went above surface to get an ally to sabotage the Styx) are captured by the Rebecca's and Styx, and Will's father is murdered. However, the group manages to escape from their clutches and go above ground, where it is found out that Mrs. Burrows has developed supernatural powers due to after effects from Darklight (an interrogation device used by the Styx).

This book for me is 4 out of 5 stars. I would give it a 5 out of 5 stars but for me, the book had a REALLY slow beginning, which makes me take off one star. Otherwise, this book is AMAZING! There were many plot twists throughout the book (for example, Dr. Burrow's death) which threw off my predictions, but that resulted in a very fun experience. Plus, the action was very intense, such as when the protagonists were trying to escape from the Rebecca's and the Styx after Dr. Burrow's passing. It would keep me biting my fingernails at times! As mentioned before, this book is similar to Tunnels, and the only real problem with that book was again, slow progression. All in all, this book is a very good read that will keep you wanting more and more. If you enjoy this book, the sequel, Spiral is definitely something to consider!(less)

Imagine a pile of snow blowing up in your face. That's what reading Closer is like.
Why snow? Because if snow did happen to blow up in your face one day, you'd probably think, "What the--? Snow doesn't do that!! That can't happen!!" Like always, the book takes off right where we left off in Freefall. If you've read Freefall, then you know about that HUGE cliffhanger we were left with. I was pleasantly surprised when the first chapter in Closer actually backtracks to what happened when the Rebeccas escaped through the pool in the ground. That was cool to read about and see what happened to them. I hated the fact that they survived, but it was cool to read about nonetheless. From the first chapter of this book, the reader will be able to tell that this book is going to be one heck-of-an-action ride.If you take all of the action from all three previous books and smother them into one, times 25, you get Closer. This is ultimately my favourite book of the series (so far.)
I loved how there were multiple plot lines, and each one was fluently written and not jumping all over the place. I was also really fond of how the characters developed, how they became more rounded with each novel. We're introduced to new characters in the book, and for a first time appearance, they're pretty intriguing.
As far as plot goes, the plot is so good.... so good!! Multiple things are happening at once, and at the end they all interconnect in such a way that's so uniquely thought out. I haven't stated this before, but I think I'll do so now. I read The City of Ember series back when I was in 7th grade and loved it. I loved the idea of whole cities underground, and not only plain cities, but cities in exciting/dangerous peril. I read all 4 books and loved them. (With the exception of book number 3 which was a prequel to the entire series that quite frankly disturbed me a little.) Now, having read the Tunnels series, I really find that this series is WAY more realistic than the City of Ember series. I like books that are fantastical, but also pretty logical when thought about. For "subterranean fiction" lovers, I recommend reading the Tunnels series, then reading The City of Ember series and decide for yourself which you liked better. They're pretty similar, but Tunnels is better. ;)
For my last rant paragraph, I will say the scenarios that go down in this book are.... well, there is no word to describe the O__O of the book. In this book, s#!t gets real! Hard core stuff happens to the characters that you'd never think would happen to them. (Going back to the snow blowing up in you're face: "Surely they can't do that!") The action is taken to a whole new kind of level.
So in obvious conclusion, this book is my favourite in the series, and I heartily recommend you give it a read if you've gotten this far. Also, this will not be the final book in the series- if you live in the UK, the fifth book "Spiral" has been released. If you're like me and live in the US, then it has not been released yet. The fifth book is due out in spring, so hopefully that means either February or May (I know February isn't really spring, but Freefall did debut in February, and Closer debuted in May). So how can a book possibly make anyone this excited?? Read Closer and you'll see just where I'm coming from. (less)

The story picks up following the events of Freefall. It was great to finally get the last book (but is it REALLY the last book?) in the series. This was a page turner, you can't really put it down without feeling some kind of pain because you want to know what's happening next. I felt wholly disappointed at the ending however. The adventure, mystery, nefarious plots, lifelike characters, and science were still there from the previous books, but there was even more.

From the start in the first book, I have been impressed with the character development. A lot of adventure-filled science fiction books seem to skip this part in order to include more action. But Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams knew what they were doing. They used the situations to develop the characters, and they were not afraid to have the characters change over time. I think that the "most improved" character is Celia Burrows. In the first book, she was a self-absorbed couch potato who cared for TV more than she cared for her husband or adopted kids. She slowly grew over the series as she investigated the disappearance of Dr Burrows, Will, and Chester. She left that rest home and started to take yoga. She was captured by the Styx and used her yoga techniques to resist until they ramped it to crazy high levels, leaving her blind. However, as she recovered, her brain reformed differently, giving her a strong sense of smell and an almost sixth sense that allowed to sense things that other people could not. More than anything else, she has a sense of personal strength and determination that she lacked before. On page 443, she remarked that even if she was not blind, she would never watch TV again. That is a big chance for the better.

Another character that impressed me was the Second Officer. This is the same officer that helped imprison Will and Chester in the first book, but he developed some kindness and allowed Mrs. Burrows to stay in his home after the Darklight nearly destroyed her. He was kind despite his horrid mother and sister who just wanted to kill Mrs. Burrows. Eddie the Styx (Elliot’s dad) was another source of interest. For much of the book, the other characters (and I) trusted him, but Drake realized that he was still loyal to the Styx. This is also proven when he kidnapped Chester’s mom.

I could probably talk about each of the characters, but I will have to move on. I like how the plot advanced. The German bomber that Dr Burrows saw in the last book was finally explained when Rebecca One and Two (they’re alive! Elliot and Will did not kill them after all) stumbled upon New Geranium, which was originally set up by Nazi Germany in WWII as a refuge. This was a good twist to the story. While all of this is developed, Will, Elliot, Dr. Burrows, and Bartleby continued as normal, and Chester makes his trek home until crazy Martha imprisoned him in some random vacation home. During that time, Drake and Eddie are making plans. I guess what I am trying to say is that I enjoyed the complex story line that used multiple sets of characters that sometimes overlapped and influenced each other. It made for a much richer story than we would have had if the authors had just used one perspective.

The authors made some bold moves with the plot. The bushmen inside the second inner world pyramid were interesting, and I wonder how that will continue to develop. Having the Rebeccas kill Dr Burrows was a major plot twist. If any major character had died, it would have been major, but this is Dr Burrows, the reason why this entire story is happening. In terms of plot advancement, there was also the announcement at the end about the disease control hospitals being closed. This is because those were the hospitals that got samples of Elliot’s blood with the Dominion vaccine. The Styx-controlled government, especially the Darklit prime minister, will not allow for their plan to be foiled by those Topsoilers. They also framed Drake for a terrorist attack on a major bank. The Darklit New Geranium troops are actually responsible, which adds yet another layer to the evil plot of the Styx.

Just another note: After Dr Burrows died, his journal was passed along to some academics in Topsoil. One of them was Professor White who stole credit from Dr Burrows in the first book. This time, he lived up to his reputation by passing the journal along to some of his students who wrote a fictional children’s adventure story based on the events. They called it The Highfield Mole, which is what the authors called Tunnels when they self-published it. Will, of course, is upset because this fictional story could ruin his father’s reputation. I got a little kick out of it because I started to wonder if this children’s adventure story was actually the book that I was reading.

This is not specifically about this book but about the series in general. This will be a relatively long series, but each book adds something new to the story. I have never gotten the impression that they are just adding filler or publishing just to publish. Some series punch out tiny books every six months that really don't add much, but Gordon and Williiams thankfully don't do this. They write chunky books that contribute in a meaningful way to the overall story.(less)

This makes me hesitate to read the 5th book, Spiral, because I know another cliffhanger will be lurking...heheh.

Anyway, overall, I like this book. I like the plot and the pace and the characters, and the character I like the most is Mrs. Celia Burrows! Yep; it's hard not to fancy her and her newly acquired ability. If you despise her in the first book, well, you should know that she changes a lot. She's more confident and wise. I...more

It has been a long time since I read the three earlier books in the series and I was afraid I might not remember enough but Mr. Gordon's prose was so good that it felt like I had just read the three others last week. Will and Chester's adventures continue and I was so happy to see Chester given more time to be developed as a character. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone with a weak stomach. I am not bothered by The Hunger Games at all, but this book made me feel nauseous. For those who have read the other books in the series, Martha and Chester make it Topsoil, but Martha goes crazy and forces Chester to eat Topsoilers without him knowing. The pretty detailed account of the bodies made me almost barf. All in all, it's a decent book, but not for those with a weak stomach.

I powered right through this thick book. The fourth installment of the Tunnels series, Closer continues the discovery of underground worlds, villains, alliances and unlikely heroes. The inner and outer worlds are more connected than anyone previously thought, and now the Styx are bringing the battle to the surface. Drake berhasil selamat berkat seorang Styx pengkhianat yang ternyata adalah ayahnya Elliot. Drake menerima sinyal yang dikirimkan Chester dan berhasil menyelematkannya dari Martha. Chester pun akhirnya bisa pulang ke rumah. Sayangnya Styx telah melakukan Cahaya Gelap, semacam metode pencucian otak ala Styx, terhadap orang tua Chester sehingga mereka tidak mengenali Chester lagi.

Sementara itu dengan bantuan tentara Jerman, kembar Rebecca bersama pasukan Styxnya menuntut balas kepada Will. Will dan Dr. Burrow yang tengah asyik melakukan penelitian dengan mudah terkepung. Elliot berusaha menyelamatkan mereka dengan membuat kesepakatan dengan kembar Rebecca. Will dan Dr. Burrow akan ditukar dengan virus dominion, virus berbahaya buatan Styx yang digunakan untuk menghancurkan topsoil, yang berhasil direbut oleh Will dan Elliot dari si kembar beberapa waktu yang lalu. Dr. Burrow yang sudah buta dengan keadaan mengira percecokan mereka dengan kembar Rebecca hanyalah permainan dan jauh tidak penting dibandingkan penelitian yang tengah dilakukannya. Rebecca Dua yang sudah muak dengan Dr. Burrow akhirnya menembak ayah angkatnya itu. Elliot akhirnya terpaksa harus menyerahkan virus dominion kepada para Styx untuk menyelamatkan Will.

Will dan Elliot kembali ke permukaan dan bergabung dengan Drake dan Chester untuk menyelamatkan topsoil dari serangan Styx.

Kesan
Tidak ada yang salah dengan petualangan Will. Hanya saja setting petualangannya yang berada di bawah tanah, yang semakin lama semakin dalam saja, memberikan efek susah bernapas. Belum lagi dengan adanya koloni bawah tanah yang pintar, kejam dan menyeramkan. Ditambah dengan sikap Dr. Burrow yang begitu menyebalkan. Dan kelangsungan hidup topsoil yang bergantung pada pahlawan-pahlawan yang tampaknya kurang meyakinkan....ckckckck sebaiknya ambil napas yang panjang atau sedia masker pernapasan sebelum membaca buku ini.(less)

I've generally enjoyed this series so far, but with this book and the one before, I've had a hard time sympathizing with any of the characters. I know most sci-fi is plot-driven rather than character-driven, but I feel so disconnected from these characters at times that when one character dies in this book, I was actually glad to be rid of that person. I have continued to enjoy the series and actually felt this one was a bit better than the last one, but I still feel like the characters are a bit flat or that they are just kind of annoying to a point. When certain characters died I wasn't really saddened as much as I was glad to get back to the story. I did like the addition of a new character or two but only because these characters showed more character than many of the more simplistic ones. Makin lama, ceritanya makin rumit, ya. Buku sekuel pertamanya "Tunnels" terasa mudah diikuti karena ceritanya menarik dan menegangkan. Tapi pas baca buku sekuel ke 4 ini jadi terasa "berat", mungkin karena penghubungan fakta dengan Jerman & Nazi. Dan aku sangat bete waktu baca bagian Dr. Burrows mati TANPA KISAH BERARTI! Excellent YA novel, maybe even J but it's a bit intense sometimes and it's got higher vocabulary than a lot of J. It took a bit to get into this book since I hadn't read the previous book since it was published - there are so many story lines going on that it's hard to remember - so it's best to refresh your memory before starting this one. I hope I don't have to wait too long for the next in the series - #5 Spiral.

This is an extraordinary continuation of the tunnels series. It has to do with another world at the center of the earth inhabited by tree men and a race of Germans who went there during WWII. I think this book is really great, I mean its filled with action, suspense and tradegy its like you can almost picture that you're in some sort of movie. Every ending in this series makes you think of what might happens next. I wonder if Will would and the others would somehow save the Topsoilers from the Styx.

A world under our, Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams have returned with the book, CLoser, and it is more dangerous, more exciting, and more intense than ever. I could not put the book down and now I can't wait for the next book, Spiral. If you have read the past book, you will enjoy this one as well.

Continuing with the series... I liked this one, perhaps a little better than some of the others. Fewer people die, and things seem to be turning a little for the heros. There are a number of things that need resolution and I'm waiting for the next 2 installments for the conclusion.

I liked this book much more than the last one and I felt like it didn't leave you hanging with what happens next despite knowing there is another sequel on the way. It reminded me of the first Tunnels book but had a stronger story line with overlapping plots.
