The Golden Road (The Story Girl #2)
I've thought of something amusing for the winter, I said as we drew into a half-circle around the glorious wood-fire in Uncle Alec's kitchen. It had been a day of wild November wind, closing down into a wet, eerie twilight. Outside, the wind was shrilling at the windows and around the eaves, and the rain was playing on the roof. The old willow at the gate was writhing in t...more

As usual I'm reading a public-domain book on my iPhone during stolen moments like solo lunches. And as usual, Maud's homey, poignant writing style has me enthralled.
Updated to add: This book really demonstrates the power of Maud's memories of her idyllic childhood on Prince Edward Island, and her keen understanding and observations of human nature. Love.

I like the Story Girl, but the theme of The Golden Road is so great. Montgomery called childhood "the golden road", and in this, Bev the grown-up narrator was able to pinpoint the time when they were all just about to leave the golden road. The children only had a small hint at the time that something was about to change, but the adult, looking back, knows.

Oh, I sooo enjoyed this sequel to "The Story Girl". Both of them together create the most delightful of books.
Now that I've finished reading it, I feel sad to leave my new friends behind. Beverley, Felix, Cecily, Peter, Felicity, Dan, Sara Ray, and, of course, Sara Stanley (better known as the Story Girl). Such charming friends that I won't soon be forgetting. Oh, and Patrick Grayfur too, for a good cat mustn't be forgotten either.

The Golden Road sees the King cousins growing up. They enjoy more antics and stories and get through more humorous trials but there is a much more sombre tone to the book, leading up to the goodbye as they spread out in different directions and say goodbye to their time of living and playing together. The preaching contest is my favorite little incident in this book. The boys have a contest for preaching and the girls get to decide which child preacher is the very best.

Sekuel dari The Story Girl.

I'm so glad that I read this book. I loved the Story Girl however I was a little disappointed when it ended; I felt there was more to tell. So when I read this book I was much relieved. Of course there were more stories to tell! You can't read the Story Girl without reading this book and vice versa.
This book made me reflect on my own childhood and all the good times I had exploring the woods and building forts. It actually gave me more drive to create lasting memories with my children. It's such...more

This book is perfectly fine. It's charming at times. The characters are likeable, but I don't know. It's not as good as The Story Girl. The characters aren't particularly well developped for the most part. Well, not all of them. I would say that neither Felix nor Sara Ray are strictly necessary. I just, I wanted more of the relationships between the children. I felt like some of that was lost in the second half of this book. It's again about the same group of eight children as the Story Girl.

Despite the fact that I gave 'The Golden Road' the same rating as 'The Story Girl' I enjoyed this one just the tiniest bit more.
Like most LMM, the story is at turns serious, amusing, and just downright silly, but one of the key themes of 'The Golden Road' is the path to adulthood and the loss of innocence that comes with growing up.
The characters are ever concerned with the idea of their futures, yet simultaneously completely terrified of them, which is such an easily understood feeling. The s...more

Oh, Maud, your characters live and breathe, beautiful and funny. They stay with me like no others.
Gorgeous descriptions as usual, and I really love all the little stories woven into the children's adventures, which are all both hilarious and poignant. The children bicker a lot, but it's obvious they are all fond of each other. I was touched by Felicity's sorrow at the Story Girl's departure.

I read this book primarily because I wondered whether the Awkward Man were going to court the Story Girl (view spoiler). Because, despite her being only 15, these things DO sometimes happen in this sort of book, and I wondered why Montgomery had had the Story Girl and the Awkward Man get acquainted in the previous book.
Anyway. I liked this one mostly better than The Story Girl, and I loved the chapter in which they spend the night with sup...more

'The Story Girl' entertained us with the shenanigans of Beverley King and his cousins and friends, including a contest to see who could give the best sermon (with hilarious results) This book is no less funny as the children band together to create their own newspaper, 'Our Magazine' with some pretty funny articles and Q&A's. The story ends on a bittersweet note as the children are growing up, but is nonetheless worth reading.
The Golden Road is even more episodic than The Story Girl, perhaps, and maybe that's why I took a fairly long time reading it, returning to it every now and then when I felt like this kind of reading. I loved it, nevertheless, the stories that were at times heartwarming, at times wistful or even scary, but always have that combination of life and beauty which is characteristic of Montgomery. There's a bittersweet air of the end of childhood, with the narrator Beverley looking back to those years...more
I have a nasty habit of picking up the latter LMM books before the first ones in the series. I read "Mistress Pat" before "Pat of Silver Bush" (thanks to our library, which only had "Mistress Pat") and I read "Anne of Ingleside" before I read "Anne of Windy Poplars" and "Anne's House of Dreams" (thanks once again to our library, and the fact that Dad picked up "Anne of Ingleside for me at a book sale). I was determined not to read this book before I read "The Story Girl." So much for that! It ca...more
(by the writer of Anne of Green Gables) Sarah "The Story Girl" and her friends write a newspaper over the summer. It was fun to read some of the articles that the kids had written - the bad grammar, irrelevant details, made-up info, etc. There were other stories too about adventures they had. I learned that Montgomery was born in 1874 in Prince Edward Island and died in Toronto in 1942.
I was worried sick about poor, sweet Cecily. I skipped to the end because I couldn't stand it---I had to find out what happened to her!
I thought the Peg Bowen character was a nice and creepy touch. At the beginning, I thought it would turn she was really just a good and misunderstand old lady, but Montgomery really made her into a hag of sorts.

I enjoyed this one more than its precursor because it's not just a utopian summer, it's life happening. Still didn't care much for the very limited point of view, although it's nice how some things are worked in because Bev is eavesdropping, or because he's the one people talk to about things, or because the Story Girl writes to him forty years later. But things like weddings and Uncle Alec's concern for Cecily sort of come out of the blue because Bev doesn't figure much in adult happenings, alt...more
This was a lot better than Story Girl. The characters were flushed out really well and the author did what she does best. Write wonderful descriptions that doesn't seem drawn out or boring. The end of the book was particularly good because it showed how they have all grown together and now it is time to move on and go separate ways.
Pretty much everything I said about The Story Girl applies here, though this book does come to a proper ending. If you think about the books together, then you do get a full story with character arcs and less of an episodic feel.
I recommend The Golden Road along with The Story Girl to fans of YA.

This is the sequel to the Story Girl. It was fun to read about more of the children's adventures, and gave closure to the characters, as well!! There were times I laughed right out loud! L.M. Montgomery is such a good writer, and I have loved reading more of her books that are different than the "Anne" books!
A nice sequel or should I say continuation to The Story Girl. Perhaps a bit more about the childrens' lives and less stories than the first book, but I liked that. I would have liked to know a bit more their future lives, but perhaps that would just have ruined the atmosphere of the Golden Road of Youth.
You know I hate give anything by Montgomery under 5 stars because some of her books are my dearest, closest friends but...you can't win everytime! It was a great little book. It has most of the great things about Montgomery's writting but I think because of the point of view it is written from it just lacks some of the characterization we get in the other books.
As with all Montgomery's series, I liked the second book more than the first. The characters were a bit more adult, and we found out more about them and got deeper into them. Again, the Finnish translation felt a bit too modern for me and somewhat annoying ("Meidän Lehti" and the other missing possessive suffixes, argh!), but I'm starting to get used to it.
This second of the Story Girl series was just as delightful as the first. Again, we visit with the King cousins and friends and share in their many adventures and stories. This year they decide to publish a family newspaper complete with editorials, an etiquette column, a household hints column, a fashion column, a personals column, a fiction and poetry page, and a section for exciting adventures. And the paper is just as much fun as the rest of the story all filled with a lively imagination and...more
