Chickadee Winter, written by Dawn L. Watkins and colorfully illustrated by Gabriela Dellosso, weaves a Christmas story around a treasured childhood memory. "Things take some getting used to," Grandfather says. But Jack doesn’t think he will ever get used to the cold and snow at his grandparents’ house. Strange, though. Grandfather’s chickadees don’t seem to mind the cold. One day the little birds are escorted inside to perch in the newly cut Christmas tree. What could live ornaments have to do with Jack’s homesickness? Jack’s attitude changes as he watches the birds. Early readers will enjoy this charming picture book from JourneyForth.
This is a lovely story about a boy, and his family moving from New Mexico to live with his grandparents. Understandably, the boy is not pleased in the change, and clearly misses his former home. However, his grandfather (a man of few words) helps him see that he will "get used to it." I really enjoyed the way Watkins painted pictured with her words, using rish descriptions and poetic format. The illustrations are beautiful, and, combined with the detailed descriptions, make me feel like I am in the story experiencing the cold and quiet winter weather.
