Hoo boy.

It's surprisingly difficult to win a book, complete with a personal and very affable letter from the author, and discover it's not your cup of tea.

Good Sci-Fi is soul food to me; it has the capacity to light me up like no other genre, to tilt my brain towards the extraordinary, to review familiar ideas from bizarre angles and watch strange hatchling thoughts emerge from my vertiginous mind.

There's a lot to be said for the other Sci-Fi that is more basi More...

This first book, in the great SF tradition of action and adveutures tales going from some Heinlein to some David Drake, is done with the love of it, entrhusias and a fair competence. The pace is relatively fast, the caracters could get you interested in their fate and it should please many of the readers of Military SF or Space Wars yarns. At times we had a feeling of almost being there" , or involved, even in thepart of the book that are the most far from our common real experience of life More...

I won this book on a goodreads giveaway; the first one I've won so far.
Fairly sure this is the author's first book, so I don't think I was expecting anything amazing. But I did actually quite like it. In fact, as soon as Captain Jace Spade put on his eye patch and lit up his cigar, I decided it was going to be a fun read!
There were a few parts where the writing came across a bit clumsy or unrefined, but I think thats understandable in a first book. However it didn't seem to matter More...

I'm very glad I received a copy of this book thanks to First Reads, as I'm unlikely to have stumbled upon it otherwise and it was a very enjoyable read.

Galaxy of Heroes is set in the distant future – a future where the human race is scattered far from Earth and under the constant threat of violence and extinction from the more powerful inhabitants of the universe. It focuses around the experiences of four main characters who share a common history and who meet again as the action unf More...

This is a first book, so I'm going to give constructive criticism. I hope that's what the author wants and that it helps him, even if just a little. Due to that, there will be spoilers.

Firstly let me say that I've had the opportunity to read other first novels and couldn't even finish some of them. I did finish this one, so that's a big positive right off the bat. And I didn't finish it just to get it finished. I was genuinely interested in where the story was going and what would happ More...

I won this book from Goodreads First Reads!

I wanted to give this book more than 3 stars, but my feeling about it is that it was closer to 3 than to 4.

This book has 3 parts to it. The first part is about Capt Jace Spade who finds himself a scapegoat in a plot to control the galaxy. It was very slow in building the character, and getting to the interesting part of the story.

The 2nd part was certainly my favorite. Genie the cyborg and Sgt Joe Grimes were a c More...

I liked the storyline. I liked the characters. I liked the physical aspects of the book (cover art/font/paper weight). But, as I got about 1/2 way through the book, I was leaning towards a "2" rating. My reason had to do with the writing itself. I felt as if the phrases that would have normally "packed a punch" failed to. This is because the writing was the same sparse/blunt style whether it was the normal course of the telling or it was that last power sentence at the e More...

Set in the far future with the human race facing extinction from being caught between two other warring races, this book focuses on a few humans struggling to save themselves and maybe the human race.

I liked the two warring races, even if one of them does not get much face time. The humans were also fun to read. They are all action heroes in an action movie, but they were still engaging individuals.

The plot itself revolved around some willful stupidity and a lot of mass hyste More...

A pretty good military science fiction space opera story. I had a few issues with some of the space travel parts (you know how picky I am about this area... ) but the story was interesting and the characters got under my skin (in a good way ;).

The plot line that humanity isn't the over all baddest in the galaxy in the galaxy was different. Instead humanity is hanging on by a thread, one of the more endangered, weak and junior races in the galaxy, just trying to live between the cracks More...

I won this book from the Goodreads first reads program.

The book had the potential to be a great story. The first problem was that it was in need of some editing. The story was interesting but there was too much going on and it seemed to race through all the plot points. The novel was split up into three parts and I think it would have been better if they had been separated into three novels/novellas and then expanded on. I think that way the pacing would have been better and there co More...

I started reading this because the title sounded corny and a bit fun. It has a lot of very detailed action/battle scenes, but it's also really interesting. There were a few, strange scenes that I liked -- by strange, I mean that they didn't really add to the plot, but as standalone scenes they were neat and the descriptions (like when Capt. Casey goes swimming -- I really grokked that) were really neat.

I also really liked the different kinds of humans and how they evolved because More...

Galaxy of Heros is a sci-fi novel that takes place in the future. The story is centers around the lives of four characters: Capt. Spade, Genie the cyborg, Capt. Mina Casey, and Sgt. Joe Grimes. I have to say that Capt. Spade was by far my favorite character. I didn’t always like him, but he was never dull.

The strength of this novel is the action and it is action packed. It is not a boring read, but extremely fast paced. Is this a great literary classic, NO. However, it is a fun More...

I won a copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads and began to read it a couple of weeks ago. It started off as such a fun read, and I ended up telling my brother about it. While I was at the store, he "borrowed" it and I just got it back. (He thought it was a great romp, btw.) So I finished reading it last night. I can totally see this being made into a SyFy channel movie - campy, fun, crazy made-up creatures with awesomely predictable names, etc. The book was kind of chop More...

I won Galaxy of Heroes from Goodreads.

This book is out of my normal genre and not something I would have thought I would like. However, I was able to read the entire book, unlike some other books I have attempted.

I think this book is pretty good for a first depending on the reader. I am not really into this genre at all, but the book managed to keep me interested. It is not meant for a hardcore sci-fi fan, but more of a mediocre not completely uninterested in sci-fi type of p More...

I won this advance from Goodreads and I'm glad I got to read it. This was a great science fiction adventure. I loved the space aspect of the story and had a lot of fun reading. My favorite character was Captain Jace Spade and boy did he have attitude. A great book if you are looking for a fun space adventure with different races and space exploration.

This book reminds me of an episode of a sci-fi t.v. show. It could be somewhat good, with lots of revisions. It's written in a way that I think younger audiences would appreciate, but that would require taking out the adult rated material. I'd take it out anyway, it distracts from the plot of the novel, and was the reason I couldn't finish the book.

Not the genre of sci/fi I usually read and so not my favorite book, but it was ok. I got this one from goodreads and is kind of cool in that it is not a polished product yet - huge margins, no copyright and a few more typos that normal. The plot is a deep space adventure revolving around a few barely related characters. The individual stories are fun enough, but really feel disconnected from each other. Nothing in this book surprised me, but it was a fun enough read.

I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway I entered.

Galaxy of Heroes is a great example of ample imagination, with a difficult follow through. It felt as if the author struggled to piece together a solid plot, instead I inferred an attempt at a character piece. However, the characters really did not have the depth to handle the load.

I did enjoy the world created by the authors imagination, and I feel that with a rewrite and some outside editing there is promise there. More...

Won my copy here on Goodreads.

While I'm not a huge fan of outer space science fiction, I find it hard to not read free books. So I read it and was pleasantly surprised. It was indeed a good read.

My 11 year old son also read and enjoyed it.

I won this on Goodreads. Although SciFi is not one of my normal genre's I'm up for a good story of any sort. Much of this I did enjoy- particularly the characters and the action. I didn't expect to chuckle quite so much either but I did - that's kind of a first for SciFi for me since I guess the others I've read are more serious or something. So I enjoyed the dialogue greatly.

The writing was pretty good - at times the flow just seemed a bit off though but not severely so or anything. More...

I won this from Good Read's First Reads.

This was an enjoyable read. It was definitely different than anything I have ever read. It started off smoothly, and kept me intrigued within the first few pages. The characters were interesting and all had their own distinct personalities that felt real. I loved Spade and Genie the most, however. I also liked Tanaka. There were so many elements in this book that are so true to things that are going on in the world today, and I was constantly p More...

It's a good old fashioned space opera. All you need to know about the characterization is on the back cover and the novel really doesn't get any deeper.

The plot holes and inconsistencies are there, but it still is a fun read and kept me engaged all the way until the end.

Galaxy of Heroes is a title that sparks interest in a book. Unfortunately, this book was unable to hold my interest. The writing did not flow very well, the characters were under-developed, as was the plot. I feel this book had a lot of potential that the author just did not quite reach. The book was over before I had the chance to enjoy it.

I won this book on Goodreads and quickly found out it was not the book for me. The writing style was ok and I liked the main characters, I just don't really care for science fiction. Basically the book centers around four main characters and it is definitely action packed. Some of the word usage in the book was kind of hard to follow, but I did manage to get through it. For somebody who likes the sci-fi genera, this book is for you.

I received this book through First Reads. For a new author I'd say this is a decent first book. Not a bestseller, but certainly capable of finding a niche audience. The story was on the space opera side, which usually isn't my style for reading, but I still enjoyed it. I would only recommend this book to folks who read heavy science fiction.
