Both a personal memoir and a French novelist's encounter with American reality, White Dog is an unforgettable portrait of racism and hypocrisy. Set in the tumultuous Los Angeles of 1968, Romain Gary's story begins when a German shepherd strays into his life: "He was watching me, his head cocked to one side, with that unbearable intensity of dogs in the pound waiting for a...more

For some years ago, I heard there is a film made by Samuel Fuller (1982) based on the novel, also dedicated to Gary, the author, but the film was never released to theaters in the U.S, due to accusations of racism. But I consider neither the novel nor the film in relation to racism. It’s mostly a story about the terrible process of training animals.

“There are many ways of becoming a professional beauty, not to say a whore, and one of them is to write noble books, to take inspired, humanistic positions on all the right causes, keep signing those manifestos. You become a professional of other people’s suffering…” – White Dog

There is just so much out there. Before preparing to write on the film White Dog, I was not aware that it was based on a book by renowned French author Romain Gary. I was not even aware of the existence of Gary. He was a...more

Cos umani...more

Recommends it for: Fans of the Samuel Fuller film.
Recommended to Ryan by: No one, became interested in reading it after seeing The Criterion Collection's release of the film.
I actually became interested in reading "White Dog" by Romain Gary after seeing the Samuel Fuller film adaptation of the same name. I would have to say the film was loosely adapted, seeing as the book has a completely different thing going on in some sections. There were parts of the book where I began to feel bored and wanting more to do with the dog himself, I realized that he was would be missing from the story for long periods of time. I guess I was expecting more events from the film to be...more

Not the best I have read in this theme, but the story is interesting at some points.
It is very typical of Roman I believe.

Not the best of Romain Gary, but still good. it is a period of life of Gary, as he is the main character of the book and can be considered as his diary.

Oy...where to start?
Angry, cynical writer with idealist young wife adopts messed-up, trained-to-attack-'blacks'-dog in the midst of the '68 movements/ riots in LA and in Paris.

The book is an angry manifesto about the state of things in the 60's both in the USA and France, and feels very much like reading someone's personal diary, with an interesting twist at the end.

A fine book, it fits well with some of my other reading lately (Eldridge Cleaver, Hilton Als, etc) and a quite interesting premise, but probably the most pre-french-ious voice I've ever read. Maybe people kept telling him he did not understand America because he did not indeed understand it, not because they are stupid.

Romain Gary was a Jewish-French novelist, film director, World War II aviator and diplomat. He also wrote under the pen name Émile Ajar.

Born Roman Kacew (Yiddish: קצב, Russian: Кацев), Romain Gary grew up in Vilnius to a family of Lithuanian Jews. He changed his name to Romain Gary when he escaped occupied France to fight with Great Britain against Germany in WWII. His father, Arieh-Leib Kacew, ab...more
