قل...more

Although the title was not that much eye-catching when I first picked up the book, I was absolutely engrossed right after reading the few first sentences. Pratolini has been pretty much successful to present the emotive aspects of what seems to be a mundane life. Family is the most fundamental social group, is the first bosom where you are warmewheartedly embraced, and in this capacity inspires a bittersweet kind of yearning. It is therefore no surprise that the proletarian viewpoint of the stor...more

I read it in Italian and must admit I don't think I understood 100% but from what I did understand the book was about the love between two brothers who lead 2 very different lives. The author writes the book in the form of a letter to his brother, who has passed away, and he goes through his memories of their lives and in a way tries to ask for forgiveness for some of the things that happened...

It's a small novel, not much more than a novella. The story of two Florentine brothers, between 1918 and 1945, who are raised separately. It evoked the sensations of childhood very well for me and also the complicated feelings of two siblings who are bound together by family even though they are often not understanding or trusting. Very nicely written.

Vasco Pratolini (October 19, 1913 - January 12, 1991) was one of the most noted Italian writers of the twentieth century.

Born in Florence, Pratolini worked at various jobs before entering the literary world thanks to his acquaintance with Elio Vittorini. In 1938 he founded, together with Alfonso Gatto, the magazine Campo di Marte. His work is based on firm political principles and much of it is ro...more
