I read this book many years ago and it was my first introduction to the South African apartheid and Rhodesia. The descriptions are beautiful. Readers meet Boer settlers, English farmers, native peoples, miners, scholars, hunters, and more. In many of these stories, the role of the white mother/woman/and daughter in Africa is shown as very confining and unhappy.

Excellent collection of short and longer stories by a very powerful writer, inspired by her childhood spent in Africa. Before this I had only read "The Fifth Child" by Doris Lessing, which left a strong impression on me, although in a creepy way let's say. But this book is very different and I enjoyed it much more. My favourite stories were "The Old Chief Mshlanga", "The Antheap", "Hunger" and a few others... But if I were to choose only one it would be "The Story of Two Dogs", for me the most h ...more

L'unica

Dorris Lessing is very good at the long story, and this collection contains some her best early stories. Unfortunately the long story is not popular. Most writers don't bother with it. Anything over 7000 words is too long to be placed in a a magazine or a literary journal, and anything under 50,000 words is to short to be published as a novel. Lessing complains about this fact in her introduction, which was written in 1965, and of course this kind of formula thinking has only gotten worse in the ...more
I found the stories which concerned themselves with the lives of the white colonials to be most deeply felt. Those told from the perspective of the natives seemed superficial and, at times, condescending.

I haven't read many short story collections, but these were pretty amazing...except for the longest ("Hunger" at 100+ pp), which I could have done without. The last vestiges of colonial rule in British Southern Africa....

Both of her parents were British: her father, who had been crippled in World War I, was a clerk in the Imperial Bank of Persia; her mother had been a nurse. In 1925, lured by the promise of getting rich through maize farming, the family moved to the British colony in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Like other women writers from southern African who did not graduate from high school (such as Oliv ...more
