Dorks, Dweebs, Debutantes, and Jocks—Where would you fit in?

Being the new girl is tough—just ask sixteen-year-old Rio Jones. A New York transplant, Rio has no clue how she's going to fit in at her fancy new private school in Southern California. Plus, being late, overdressed, and named after a Duran Duran song doesn't make the first day any easier for her.

Then Rio meets Kr...more

For those of you who love this book, I would turn back now. Unless, of course, this is the kind of review you're looking for.

I first read Art Geeks and Prom Queens (AGPQ) when I was at the height of my YA craze which began with the Immortals series, also by author Alyson Noel. I wasn't really a fan of her writing, but, like any good addiction, it wasn’t so much about the quality. And so I embarked on the unreal, painfullly so, journey that is the life of Rio Jones. For whatever reason, I was ac...more

The book I was reading was called Art Geeks and Prom Queens by Alyson Noel. I loved this book beacause of the way it hooks you in and I think a lot of girls would also be very intrested in it beacause of the things that it states and the way all the characters act.
I liked this book because it makes every scene look like a movie. For example, when JC is going off(yelling)on Rio. The narrator describes it so well it seems like your right there watching it happen. Also it definatley shows the pee...more

So let me begin this review by stating that I finished it just a few hours ago and wanted to write the review up tonight. Now I've left the book downstairs and completely forgot what the book was called. I know, that sounds terrible because the fact is, the title has a lot to do with the plot so I think this already suggests what I'm going to say about the rest of it.
I was super excited to get this book because as many of you know I have a huge thing for books that have school, whether public,...more

I think this a good book it shows many readers who read this book how high school is for many people and how they get nervous and tense. Rio in this book moves to a new school and becomes nervous on her first day of school. When Rio gets to school and she meets Kristi who makes her feel loved and welcomed at her new school. Rio doesn’t always agree with her actions and what she does tot other people. But she realizes that Kristi does not always become friends with everyone and she decides to sti...more

This has to be one of the worst books I have EVER read. This is like a horrible adaptation of one of my favorite movies, Mean Girls and its insulting. The main charcter has to be the most obnoxious protagnist ever. Rio starts out to be relatable, a dweeby kid who likes photography and dosen't fit in very well and her mom not always agreeing with her. Then when she befriends Kristi things get to be very unlikable. She becomes instantly popular by doing things that she should regret doing like not...more

Rio Jones is a new kid from New York. She's got her mother's look and height. Basically, she is a gorgeous girl. But somehow she doesn't aware of it. She starts to hang out with Jas and Mason and for some reasons, she got detention and her mother told her not to hang out with them anymore. Then she meets Kristi, a popular girl who seems to have lots of friends. Kristi told her that in order to be one of her friends, Rio needs to follow some rules, which most of it are rid...more

New girl who starts off pretty smart and confident, but at her initiation into the popular clique, she fizzles to weak, bitchy and a complete follower.

Irritating.

There's no other way around reviewing Art Geeks and Prom Queens than getting nasty. Halfway through, I'd rolled my eyes a few times, wondering if I was reading a cheesy diary of someone who is actually in high school, giving writing a go.
The tone of writing, the voice of the main character, all the brand name dropping and fancy living h...more

77 pages in and I'm really not enjoying this anymore. It starts out ok - Rio Jones is the new girl at her school (having just moved to California from New York). Rio's never been all that noticeable, but she gets her braces removed, shoots up a few inches, and, suddenly, in the new wardrobe her former-model mother has purchased for her, she's a knock-out. Rio falls in with a group of art-geek stoners her first day of school and develops a crush on Jas (hot surfer boy material). But she's not sur...more

Having not been terribly impressed with the Evermore series, old school contemporary Alyson Noel hit the sweet spot and reminded me of what she does best. Rio moves to the deliciously shallow community in Southern California and immediately feels out of her depth in both the geek and the popular crowds. Though she feels slightly more comfortable and able to be herself with the geeks, she is swayed to the dark side when her romantic feelings are shut down in an oblivious but insensitive way.

Brief Summary:
Rio Jones just wants to fit into her new school.
First, she is 25 minutes late for her class and totally overdressed...and for sure she'd be the only girl to be named after a Duran Duran song. Even when she had made new friends, Mason and Jas, one quick move and being caught by the school security just gave them one entire week of detention. Now Rio's mum is disapproving of Mason and Jas.

After an uneasy start to her new school year, she meets Kristi Wood and her extremely popular c...more

A few quick quotes to demonstrate why I skipped pages 141-217

[Pot] ... "But all that happened like way long ago, and I haven't really done it since. But not wanting to look like a total geek, I go, 'Yeah, I light up every now and then.' And then I pinch it from his fingers, take a long, deep drag..." (p. 16).

[Popularity] ... "And I'm not used to worrying about stuff like this, 'cause at my old school it was just me, Paige, and Hud... and we didn't really care what everyone else thought. I guess...more

Art Geeks and Prom Queens a was cute and light read that I finished in less than a day. I enjoyed reading about Rio's up and downs as she began to rise to be the most popular girl in her class and than going crashing to the bottom when the Kristi, the former queen bee, turns out to be well... mean. I thought Rio's character was very believable by how she handled the situation, because I could see why she would get lost in the moment of popularity which would quickly lead her to want to be the Pr...more

The book art geeks and prom queens by Alyson Noel was about a girl named rio.she was a art geek.but then she had to move state and school house. Already after reading the blurb and a couple of reviews, I knew this book was in the danger zone. I heard them talking about a stupid main character. And I absolutely hate it when the main character is a brainless girl. Still, I decided to give it a chance.
I only need two words to describe the whole plot of this book. Mean Girls. *the first movie*Yeah, that's all I need to say about it. Those two plots are exact matches. *spoilerspoilerspoiler*Normal girl goes to high school gets ge...more

What was this book?

I swear this is the ultimate fantasy of every girl, to somehow be magically 'pretty enough' to be noticed by the popular girl and welcomed into the folds.

Yes, this was a story about Mean Girls ... a twist on it.

It was so BAD. I can't tell you how many times the protagonist made NO sense. She stopped caring about her crush and started caring about the popular girls so fast it was unbelievable. Although what she did at the end was cool, she was just the most insufferable person...more

Waaw.
Started slow. Like your typical high school angst-filled, groving up kind of novel.... And than it was like watching a train wreck from a passing car, wondering: "what the hell..." knowing that this isnt gonna be pretty!

Clicks, bulling, emotional blackmail, manipulation,... basically the typical part of high school life no one wants to talk about but everyone knows is there. It shows the part of people that knows but does not want to acknowlege. The us that hide behind a mask and nearly ki...more

This book is about a girl in high school named Rio Jones who is very upset that her parents are making her move to California because they want her to start somewhere new... again! They hang out with her for a while but then Rio finds out about Jas's girlfriend, Mo...more

This book felt like a rip-off of Mean Girls.

I hated the way the book was written too. Rio is such a spoiled brat, and it really bugged me. Rio practically gets everything she wants in this book. She wanted a boyfriend, she got one. And then came along Tyler and her stupid "relationship" with him. She was so stupid, how could anyone be that naive to let KRISTI BELL, go into an empty room to "get a scarf"? She was always so bitchy to her mom too. And I literally wanted to flip a table when she cu...more

Rio's family has just moved to California, and on top of that, her body has filled out. She now looks much more like her former model mother, but wants to still be the arty-geeky girl she was before. But when she's spurned by a guy at her new school, she comes up with a theory that every guy wants to be with the prom queen, so she sets out to infiltrate the "In" crowd and be one of those girls. Of course, she loses who she is while doing so, and becomes invested in that world, until it comes cra...more

Reading this one for my library's Teen Book Discussion Group (The teens pick the books we read & we talk about them at our next meeting).

Unable to finish this one. If a book is going badly, I usually give it 50 pages before I make the decision whether I want to soldier on or give up. This is in keeping with my new motto: "Life is too short to read bad books". With this one, however, I stopped short of my usual cutoff. Maybe it was my mood, but I just couldn't stomach how shallow the charact...more

reading this book was like watching an american series like Hell Cats ... high school experience in America .... i have to admit that i liked reading this book it does really hook you up from the beginning till the end you just wanna know what will happen next to her, finished it in one day .

This has been sitting on my shelf for a few years now. I bought it at the L.A. Times Book Festival at the height of my, "I want to write YA fiction" phase. After making it through the first few chapters, I remember why my love affair with Gossip-Girl-type books came to an end.

I first read an Alyson Noel novel when I picked up Evermore and I was sucked into all the mysticism and Orange County references. The characters seemed real, multi-dimensional and funny, and Noel's tone was conversational;...more

This book is almost an enjoyable romp through teenage life.

Except for the stereotypes, the 16-year-olds doing hard drugs and the fact that it's the same book we keep reading over and over again: think Mean Girls, only not nearly as funny.

The character I hated most was, luckily, not the protagonist. It was her mother. Really, you have no choice but to hate her because her behaviour is truly awful and she's simply unbelievable as a character. That paragraph of explanation right at the end? Doesn't...more

It started out good - Rio has just moved to a new town, new school, and is adjusting to that plus dealing with typical teen issues such as mother-daughter conflict and body image. She starts out as a fairly confident character, content to live her life on her terms, but quickly changes into one of the in-crowd wannabes. It's supremely irritating. By the end of the book she begins to come back around to her real self, but the time in between is rather annoying. I completely understand wanting to...more

The redeeming aspect of this title, which separates it from most of these "I have to sell my soul and wear designer to be popular" books, is that Rio DOESN'T. While she begins on that slippery slope, in the end she stands up to the mean girls, remains true to herself, holds on to her virginity, goes back to her true "geeky" friends (realizing, of course, that they were her true friends all along). This genre seems to be growing by leaps and bounds, and I wonder how much reference to drugs, alcoh...more

I have read two of Noel's Immortals series and the title of this just called to me. I thought it was an okay read. Not much art was mentioned like I had expected, but that was okay. Rio did start to annoy me a bit about how much of a bitch she was being with the popular kids. Like she was so conceited. But in the end she saw the error of her ways, so I can get with that. Also I did kind of relate with her about her mother. My mother is the same way, but I can never get through to her like Rio di...more
