Nachdem ich bereits von „Gracie in love“ sehr begeistert war, wollte ich unbedingt ein weiteres Buch von Susan Mallery lesen. Sie hat es mal wieder geschafft, mich mit ihrem wunderbaren Schreibstil, den tollen Charakteren und Schauplätzen zu überraschen.

„Suche: Köchin, biete: Liebe“ ist der erste Teil einer vierteiligen Buchreihe, die sich mit dem Leben der Buchanan-Geschwister beschäftigt. Diese bestehen aus den Brüdern Cal, Walker und Reid, sowie der Schwester Dani.

Schnell wird man ein Teil der Geschichte und leidet und freut sich mit den Protagonisten mit.
Besonders Penny und Cal sind zwei tolle Charaktere, die sehr gut miteinander harmonieren, aber auch zum Teil anecken.

Penny ist eine selbstbewusste Frau, die mit Mitte 30 in den besten Jahren steckt. Durch ihren Ehrgeiz hat sie es geschafft zur besten Köchin der Stadt aufzusteigen. Allerdings hat sich ihr sehnlichster Wunsch, eine eigene Familie zu haben, noch nicht erfüllt.
Bereits in ihrer Ehe mit Cal hat sie eine Fehlgeburt erleiden müssen, nun will sie es erneut mit einem Kind probieren und nimmt eine künstliche Befruchtung vor.
Obwohl ihre Ehe mit Cal scheiterte, ist sie auch heute noch sehr gut mit dessen Bruder Reid befreundet.

Cal ist ein absoluter Sunnyboy: Erfolgreich, gutaussehend, selbstbewusst.
Doch auch er hat seine Geheimnisse und Schwächen. So hat er Probleme, Gefühle zuzulassen und hat damit schon so manche Chance in seinem Leben entgehen lassen.
Wie seine Brüder Reid und Walker ist Cal auch nur bedingt an das Imperium der Buchanans interessiert. Schuld daran ist hauptsächlich seine Großmutter Gloria, die es jedem in der Familie und in der Firma schwer macht.
Durch seine Geheimnisse ist er Frauen gegenüber verschlossen und lässt keine so wirklich in sein Herz. Das ist auch der Grund, wieso die Ehe mit Penny vor drei Jahren gescheitert ist.

Aber auch alle anderen Charaktere haben ihre ganz eigene Geschichte, die sich im Laufe der Geschichte immer mehr entwickelt. In den Folgebänden der Buchanan-Reihe wird mehr auf die einzelnen Geschwister eingegangen.

Der zweite Band „Habe Mutter, brauche Vater“ wird sich mit dem Leben von Walker beschäftigen und wird demnächst von mir gelesen. Ich kann es kaum noch erwarten, in das Leben der Buchanan-Familie zurückzukehren. :)

Wer Lust auf eine wunderschöne Liebesgeschichte hat, ist bei Susan Mallery’s Büchern mehr als gut aufgehoben. (less)

Delicious was the traditional romance that a person will read. The couple fell in love, then a fight occurs, and then they make up and get back together and live happily ever after. Ex-spouses Cal and Penny find themselves in each other’s lives again when Cal hires Penny as the chef for a family restaurant that needs a major overhaul. There’s no emotional agenda on his part, he just needs the best chef. But unexpected events bring them closer together, leading them to discover truths about the past that had kept them apart.

This is the second story in a row I’ve read about a couple who were parted by a dealbreaker, which really highlights how much better this one was. In this case, the dealbreaker was Penny’s desire to have children, and the big hook of the story is the fact that Penny is pregnant, via a sperm donor, when they meet again. Or at least that’s what I thought; I expected a story about Cal’s jealousy and needing to come to terms with the pregnancy. In fact, the story was not about that at all.

The real issue between Cal and Penny was his inability to emotionally commit to her. Cal is detached towards their relationship for much of the book; at one point he thinks, “Two months ago, he’d never given Penny a thought.” Normally I would be incredibly turned off by that from the hero of a romance. But here the back story is so interesting, I was able to understand Cal and forgive him.

I appreciated the slow development of the new relationship between the characters, which made their reunion seem plausible. I also really enjoyed all the backstage detail about the restaurant business, and the set-up for Cal's sibling's stories, even though I had already read them.

I think this is the best Mallery book I've read, which considering that it wasn't the story I was expecting, and had the type of hero I normally hate, is really saying something.(less)

I am really liking Susan Mallery's writing style. Even how she can write her characters. I'm not necessarily fan of her "guys" but certainly the women come up with are certainly impressive. They leave their mark on you.

I liked this one a lot more than the last SM book I read. However, I'll start with the bad first. The romance, unfortunately wasn't good enough. I have an intense dislike for Cal. There were too many strikes against him.A serious part of me wanted her to forget all about him and find someone else who's actually worthy.

Penny is the best chef around. Cal needs a chef. Sounds simple enough... unless the were once married and now need to work together.

While we never really read much about Penny from their marriage (except the end of it) you will get the feel that Penny has changed over the 3 years she and Cal have been divorced. And since my memory isn't always great and I'm often reading more than one book at a time, the need to check details happens. This time I'm going strictly from memory so consider yourself warned. :)

This is one of those second chance at love romances although through much of the story I wasn't sure the heroine should give the hero a second chance. Penny and Cal fell in love, married and had a good life or so Penny thought. Then things started to unravel and Penny walked out, thinking that would jar Cal out of his apathy. But Cal let her go. Penny still doesn't know what caused Cal to shutdown and give up but she's moved on with her life, building a good career as a chef. Now she's back in Cal's life and she's determined to make their working relationship work.

Cal Buchanan is in desperate need of a chef and the only one that will do is his ex. Lucky for him she doesn't hold a grudge and is will to work for him, on her terms. I liked Penny from the start. She knows what she wants and stands her ground with Cal, not accepting anything less than what she wants in the negotiations of her contract. Cal, well... the more I got to know him, the less I liked him. This dude had secrets up the wazoo!

The romance between Penny and Cal is slow to pick in because neither wants to pick it up. They both want a strictly working relationship and a short one at that. Cal has only agreed to the job of manager for four months, then it's back to his own business, a chain of coffee shops called 'The Daily Grind'. Penny's fine with that, figuring she can handle being around Cal for a few months. It was interesting because really, in the beginning, they both meant what they said. They didn't want to get involved again. But as they spend more time together and find that they still care about each other. The physical attraction is still there and they eventually act on it. It came as no surprise that they got together, what I did like is that Penny didn't get all crazy stupid in love. She still had her own agenda and her baby was priority number 1. Cal was busy still keeping secrets and thinking he knew what was best for everyone. Ugh!

The three remaining Buchanan siblings throw more complications into the mix in the form of marital problems, a ladies man and a war veteran. I liked the three siblings more than I liked Cal, which bodes well for the rest of the books in the series. I also liked that they still had decent relationships with Penny and didn't hold it against her for walking out on Cal.

So the question is - does our hero redeem himself by the end? Is he worthy of a second chance with Penny? This is a romance, so in the end Penny thought "Yes", Cal was worthy. Me, I'm not so sure. There was groveling and an argument could be made with the 'old habits are hard to break' theory. But Cal kept disappointing me with his constant need to protect everyone he loves by keeping secrets. Sure, he comes clean in the end but that was due more to circumstances and others finding out than to him simply revealing what he had kept hidden.

This would have worked better for me had the hero not got on my nerves so much. There were times when I found myself actually hoping they didn't get back together which is just silly since it is a romance. In the end, I still felt that Penny deserved better. I did like the setting of the restaurant - all the foodie lingo and the chaotic atmosphere of a busy restaurant. I also liked what I read about the siblings enough to continue with the series. I'm just hoping Cal's brothers Walker and Reid, are far less annoying.(less)

What a fun story of reunited love. I loved that Cal could see how much stronger Penny had gotten since their divorce. I loved that Penny knew what she wanted (a baby) and made it happen herself. I hated how many secrets were always being revealed (usually by a conniving Gloria). I still don't know why Penny didn't just tell Gloria (in the beginning) that she didn't have designs on Cal. Auftakt zu einer mehrteiligen Familien-Romanreihe. Hier dreht sich die Handlung hauptsächlich um den ältesten Sohn der Restaurant-Dynastie Cal und seine Ex-Frau Penny, die er drei Jahre nach ihrer Scheidung als neue Küchenchefin anheuert.

Es wäre natürlich kein Chick-Lit wenn sich die Protagonisten am Ende nicht kriegen würden. Dazwischen gibt es erstaunlich wenig Reibereien (meist werden doch etliche Hürden eingebaut), stattdessen einige hot&steamy scenes.

Full-bodied story with interesting characters. Backstory made real enough, and sequel-bait woven in well enough, to make me want to know more about the cast. Its only significant weakness is a tendency to fall flat when focusing on the one-note villain, for whose motivations we get mere glancing explanation. How "Delicious" this story has been. I totally loved it. Maybe a little too passion here and there but the story was really really good. I love the family interaction, the female bonding and mostly everything.

Besides, after a fair share of TSTL heroines, I greatly appreciated a woman with a solid sense. Yes, she got pregnant by IV, but I can understand a woman who wants a child and feels her biological clock is talking to her but still she was really young!

This book just didn't hold any magic for me. I could tell they were falling in love (or should I say back in love? By the end of the book, I still wasn't convinced that he had ever really loved her the first time around.) But for some reason it didn't feel like a love story to me. It's not that he wasn't repentant for his mistakes - he was, but he kept making the same sort of mistakes. It took him too long to learn from them. The big grovel at the end was impressive, but not good enough for me.

Cal is seriously screwed up and it’s all Gloria’s fault. At the begin of the book it was interesting to understand that these tow separated but still are friends, so working together can be strange but not impossible. Cal thinks it’s better for them to be friends than anything else, because everything he touch became destructive.

The descriptions of food in this book are, well, delicious. However, the rest of the story falls a little flat. The story is based around a divorced couple who rediscovers each other while trying to save a failing restaurant in Seattle. Everyone in the story has kept hurtful secrets. The secrets are all revealed, but I didn't feel that the characters worked through the emotions. Instead, all problems were solved by too much Deus ex Machinas. I would probably rate this higher if I hadn't just finished another audiobook with an "evil aunt/grandmother" who is pulling string behind people's backs and is basically hateful and manipulative. On top of that, there were so many secrets being kept in this book by various people that it got to be almost comical toward the end.

I will say Mallery does a better than average job helping the reader understand why the secrets were kept. Plus, Mallery doesn't try to absolve characters of their action...more
