I am not a big contemporary fan... but this one caught my eye... and I read it before any in this series... another shocker LOL... what I found is that it really almost felt like a Regency Historical. He would have been a rake and she would have been the strong, kind of plain heroine that doesn't take any crap. I really enjoyed this book. Who knew!?

Well, this third book in the BUCHANANS is definitely not "sizzling", but it sure is sweet.

SIZZLING is a feel-good romance about the plain jane and the celebrity playboy falling in love. If you have read the previous books in the series, you can appreciate the trials and tribulations family members have experienced at the hands of the bitchy matriarch of the Buchanan family...whew! She certainly is a handful, but she becomes somewhat more tolerable in this installment.

The plot in the series thi...more

My gif. review on Sizzling, by Susan Mallery

Susan Mallery is a GENIUS.
There are no words to describe how amazing this novel is. My absolute favorite of Mallery's so far. :)

5 stars is not *effing* enough for this book!

He's out of the baseball field now and runs one of the companies food businesses.
Laurie is a therapist and is going to take care of Gloria Buchannan. She is a problem patient, nothing is going right, she complains about everything.

Forthright & responsible nurse is fighting her crush on famous playboy & former professional pitcher Hero who hired her to be 1 of 3 nurses of his disagreeable grandmother. She doesn't think he'll return her attraction b/c she doesn't look like the type of woman he usually sleeps with yet she feels hurt that he didn't have sex with her like he did the other 2 nurses he hired. Hero likes her refreshing no-nonsense approach with him & his grandmother as she tells it like it is b/c she...more

I found this one at the second hand book store and I was really surprised and delighted with what I found. This is going to start something new for me, I'm totally hooked on Susan Mallery now.

Reid Buchanan is a retired baseball star with nothing to do. When he picks up the newspaper one morning he finds that he is again in the news, but this time it is questioning his prowess in bed. What? Disgusted with the way things are going in his life, and trying to hide from the press he seeks a refuge a...more

Lori takes a nursing job that gives her the flexibility to also care for her dying sister. Not taking any flack from the grumpy old woman, Lori sets out to show Gloria that the only person she is hurting with her cruelity is herself. Having pushed her family away for so many years, changing is difficult.

Reid is he man who hired Lori, and Gloria's grandson. A flighty ex-baseball pitcher lacking in self-control and responsibilty, he sleeps with any woman that asks. Not wanting to deal with the day...more

Summary: Lori doesn't take anything from anyone. She is the bull headed kind of nurse that Gloria needs to get her back into shape, and the type of woman that can call Reid on his BS. This book follows around several characters. Lori is one of three nurses hired to attend to a ruthless, wealthy, and rich woman named Gloria. Gloria needs constant attention because of her broken hip. She is a bitter old women who pushes everyone out her life. Gloria's g...more

I am torn with this book. I really liked it, liked how Reid was able to change, but I still have a big problem with him and his man-whore ways. Maybe it was the way that he was so nonchalant about it, but it bugged me. I sort of liked it when the reporter laid out the story with not good news about him, he really needed to be taken down a peg. I also found it interesting how Lori seemed to really accept this part of his past, maybe that makes her a better (yet still fictional) person than me.

Reid....Mmmm wasn't that fussed on him in the first books, hes so "I love me". But put the man in a room with the right woman, and well, he just melts doesn't he!! Lori Johnston, we met earlier, when she was hired by Reid, as the day nurse for his nasty grandmother, Gloria.
Lori comes across as a strong, honest woman, who seems to know her own mind and what she wants.... but is she??
She is immediately attracted to Reid, but wont let on to the fact. Shes a strong character, and takes Gloria on...more

Overall, I enjoyed the book. I found it to be quite an emotional ending, which surprised me quite a bit. Definitely not sizzling, but it was cute. A plain jane tames a celebrity bad boy and an atrocious grandmother. Simple and sweet romance.

One of my biggest pet peeves of Mallery is the random interjections of unrelated stories. In this case, Dani, the 4th sibling of the Buchanans would just randomly pop up. It would just be there suddenly and didn't add anything to the romance between Lori and...more

This is yet another wonderful novel by Susan Mallery. I'm 3 or 3 with this series thus far, and only looking forward to reading the last book of the series with hopes that it won't disappoint.

I really liked Lori at lot. She wasn't classically beautiful, and very easy to relate to in how she felt living in the shadow of her perfect, beautiful sister. She was also a very no nonsense type of person. It was fun to see how she wasn't afraid to bump heads with Gloria as well as put Reid in his place....more

I think I liked this one better than the previous two in the Buchanans series. I loved Reid's transformation from playboy to dependable guy. Lori was a good match for him although I honestly wasn't sure I would like her in the beginning. Over the story she got better right along with Reid. Reid's growth as a person was consistent from the first of the story. Lori hit a road block with her insecurity. I would like to think with her history and reasons for her insecurity she wouldn't have been as...more

I was all ready to say this was an easy, breezy contemporary romance (sorry, Covergirl) until an unexpected development occurred near the end that literaly moved me to tears. This book has more depth than one might expect from what is sometimes termed "chick lit."

The plot is an intepretation of the "Why would he be interested in ME?" and "Why isn't she throwing herself at me like all other women?" plot that works well with the setting and characters of the Buchanan family (some of whom have the...more

I started out this series thinking Reid was a dog. His friendship with Penny, despite her divorce from his brother, showed he wasn't a TOTAL dog, and his help in Walker's book endeared him a bit more. But wow, he really is a great guy. I suppose I can see how what happened in his youth affected the man he became. Man, these Buchanan men sure do take their mistakes of their youth seriously!! It took someone who wasn't fazed by his fame or looks to give it to him straight, and when Lori did, amazi...more

This is the third book in the Buchanans Series and Reid and Lori's story.

Reid is the playboy of the Buchanan family and a former professional baseball player. He was the most likely of the Buchanan kids to take care of Gloria, their Grandmother. The start of the novel shows us that not all of Reid's women were "happy" with Reid and wrote a spiteful article in the newspaper, which just so happens to go national.

Because of Gloria's need for constant care, Reid hires 3 nurses to take care of her a...more

Really fun playful read. Second book I've read of her's and I loved it which surprised me. Thought it was better then the previous book in this series. Loved the main characters Reid and Lori. Reid was just adorable and fun to read about. The sexual tension and chemistry between them is enthralling. How they try so hard to fight it off with the whitty sarcastic banters/arguments is what makes it so fun. I loved how raw their relationship was, how real and intense it becomes and how Reid changes...more

Chemestry is right!
These two are a good match. He's full of himself, and she tells him like it is. Lori even wins the heart & respect of Reid's very difficult grandmother, and helps her to become a bit more caring towards her granchildren. Which wins the hearts of the granchildren too.
There are a few really laugh Out loud moments thru this story, because Reid is a typical 'Guy' of course. He has no idea what his manager was doing for him, or in this case, NOT doing for him.
And Lori comes of...more

Lori is annoying! Her insecurity and confidence issues pissed me off. Reid managed to grow up and evolve but Lori kept revisiting the same problems she imagined for herself over and over again. It took her too much damn time to actually think. I don't like people that avoid their problems indefinitely, and the fact that I felt the same with Lori must mean that she was well portrayed I suppose, so if that's what the writer wanted to convey, she did a hell of a job!

The Buchanans are a great family...more

okay I might be partial but I have really loved this series! it is funny, endearing, sweet and yes somewhat predictable but still a good read. I have to say though this one actually made me cry...sad and happy tears. Lori was one fought cookie who was not only fighting with Gloria (her patient and also grandmother to the Buchanan family) but also Reid...said patient's grandson. he was a playboy and age was ever the responsible one. but found themselves attracted to what they never realized they...more

This is my first Susan Mallery book and I'm not sure I'm going to be giving her another try. I'm almost tempted to give Sizzling 2.5 stars, but it wasn't absolutely horrible and Mallery is a good writer, technique-wise; I mean, there are no run-on sentences, her punctuation is correct, she writes good romance scenes, the characters are pretty interesting ... I don't know, the story just wasn't as compelling as other romances I've read. I was actually anxious to finish the book, but only because...more

This is the 3rd book in the Buchanans series, but it was the first one I read. Hero is an ex-baseball player who gets his sexual prowess dissed in print. (He was drunk and not up to his usual standards.) The tabloids are after him, so he goes to hide out at grandma's house. Grandmother is a truly nasty, unlikeable person who has succeeded in driving off her whole remaining family, her grandchildren. She's also had a heart attack and broken her hip, and has to have home health nurses, because the...more

“Where's Lori?" he asked when he saw the nurse wasn't there. "She's not avoiding me, is she?"
His grandmother slipped off her glasses, put down her book and stared at him. "Amazingly enough, the whole world doesn't revolve around you, Reid. Lori's sister is sick and Lori took her to the doctor. She'll be back in an hour or so. Can you survive on your own until then, or should I call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance?”
