If GWTW had been written like this, this book would never have been written. There would have been no movie and no one would ever have heard of Vivien Leigh.
I started off with low expectations, and found that "Scarlett" was easy to read and reasonably entertaining. I knew from the start that it deserved no more than 2 1/2 stars but was planning to give it 3, because I was enjoying it. Like many, I really wanted to find out about "Act 2" of Scarlett and Rhett. I got this book in hardback for Christmas in 1991, shortly after it was first published. It was highly anticipated and, of course, there were folks lining up on both sides of the issue as to whether it could even hope to be a worthy follow-up to Margaret Mitchell's epic novel or whether it should be judged on its own merits as the continuation of Scarlett's and Rhett's story.

Not only did I not like this book, I hated it! I fell in love with "Gone With the Wind" when I was little and watched the movie over and over with my aunts. When I finally read the book, it was one of the best I have ever read! I even fell in love with Margaret Mitchell's story and why she wrote the book.
When the made-for-tv "Scarlett" movie was made, I watched it with my sister. It wasn't the worst ever, but nothing to the original. I eventually read this book as well a...more

I believe this book came out my senior year, and we read it in school originally. I was glad I had read GWTW previously because my friends who had only seen the movie felt a bit lost when trying to read this book. I think Margaret Mitchell would be pleased with this sequal, and I think it ties up the story of Scarlett O'Hara and her family very nicely. This novel takes us off to Charleston, Savannah, and even Ireland to meet some of Scarlett's family living outside of the Atlanta area. And o...more

When I was a freshman in college, I saw Gone with the Wind for the first time. My roomie loved the old movies and I saw it with her one weekend at her house. I loved it!
I could not believe the ending. It's so funny because I didn't know much about the movie, but I sort of knew that people were not happy with the ending. Not sure why I never was intrigued to find out why or what they were talking about.
I was up in arms after seeing the movie--how could it end that way??? Luckily, the...more

hey now. this is a good book. i look at it as an extra-gone with the wind, not a continuation. i get annoyed at people who think that it's impossible to improve upon the original version just because someone else wrote it. for one thing, the original was basically a long history lesson on the civil war. now, i don't know about you, but i know a lot about the civil war and while it may have been nice to read that stuff before i learned it to give me a head start, reading it in the middle of ...more

If you have read Gone With The Wind you may be tempted to pick this up and "see what happens"...what happens is the author had about 16 ideas for Harlequin romances she never got around to fleshing out so she used them all for this...it's a mish mash of plot, she does sort of get the writing style of Mitchell... and she did mold the plots to the established characters somewhat deftly, but the plots and new characters are all very "brain candy romance" (which , hey I own a to...more

Don't waste your time. Very long winded and much of the plot (if you can call it a plot) is written for shock value. It looks like an attempt to further exploration in Scarlett's character, but it fails miserably to be entertaining or worth the too many pages to turn.
The ending is hokey and the naming of a certain child is so obviously a plot purpose it was annoying. I would give it less than one star if I could.

Ok, this book was flat-out terrible. I read it because I LOVED Gone With the Wind, but in this book the characters aren't even recognizable as the same people, and do all sorts of well, just bizarre things. Scarlett goes to Ireland to get in touch with her roots, of all things. And she's always obsessing over Rhett and simpering. The real Scarlett was too self-absorbed to ever be like that!

Gone with the Wind fans who badly want to know what happened to Scarlett and Rhett
Obviously, nothing can beat the original Gone with the Wind, but nevertheless, this sequel is an honest effort put forth by the author to complete the incomplete ending of the original. I know that most people would be very deterred by the thought of someone else writing a sequel to Margaret Mitchell's book, but it really isn't as bad as that. In fact, if you loved Gone With the Wind and you are dying to know what happened between Scarlett and Rhett, then you may want to read this book to remove...more

Although this book is the author's attempt to complete the story of Margaret Mitchell's Scarlett O'Hara from "Gone With the Wind", it should not be compared to the original book unfairly. The Margaret Mitchell Estate chose Ms. Ripley to write this book, and she does an excellent job. One must remember that each author has her own strengths and weaknesses, and judge each on her own merits. That being said, I liked Ripley's book. The character, Scarlett, as the book begins, is still ...more

Fans of Gone With the Wind
I'm going to be perfectly honest: I quite enjoyed this book.
In a guilty pleasure sort of way.
It held none of the historical beauty and epic scope of it's masterful predeccessor Gone With the Wind, and of course it takes great liberties with the continuing story of Scarlett O' Hara Butler. What I loved about Scarlett, was the fact that I was reunited with two of the most iconic romantic characters in the history of fiction. Badly written, or even sometimes cheesy, I didn't care. This was the first book I remember being so anticipated, and dreaded at the same time. I didn't think anyone could do justice to the first story and thought they should leave well enough alone. Yet I had to read it the first chance I got, and it truly did suck, with as much force as a book can suck. The characters were watered down versions of their original glory, and Scarlet, though never an angel, was just this simpering fool of a woman that the original would never have put up with. I discovered this on the bookshelves. I was intrigued to know what someone thought happened to Scarlett after the first book. I read parts and was appalled bu what I read. However, I read enough to know what happens in the entire book and do not need to go back to read it straight through. Plus, I have seen the movie. I don't know what possessed me to see such an awful thing. And it just goes to show you how something can be done in a way that it intrigues you, and you can't tear yourself away. ...more

As trash fiction, this was fun to read. As a sequel to GWTW it indeed gave closure; Scarlett is such a tragic character with so many flaws and strengths that it was sort of satisfying to see her finally figure out something approximating happiness.
That said, I didn't find it at all convincing. Scarlett may have realized her love for Ashley was a childish fantasy and her loves for Rhett and Melanie were real, but that doesn't mean that she would suddenly be able to throw off a lifetime of the...more

just finished reading the book. i have to say that i'm pleased with it. it definitely gave me closure. it will never be "Gone With the Wind", but no book will ever be, because the writer will never be Margaret Mitchell. i missed the enticing conversations between Rhett and Scarlett, the in depth descriptions of their actions...but i liked how Scarlett grew up, it was about time. as for her mooning over Rhett, well of course she was mooning over him, she was totally in love with him. an...more

I found this book to be every bit as good, if not better, then its predecessor. Where it was not penned by Mitchell, I was skeptical about whether the "feel" of the book would be the same. However, Ripley did not disappoint, and this novel has very much the same quality and breath-taking excitement as Gone With the Wind.

I was a bit wary of reading this one, but after reading Gone With The Wind, i couldn't wait to see if Scarlett could win back Rhett! I found this book fairly entertaining, and liked the evolution of Scarlett through the storyline. She becomes the woman that i secretly hoped she would, and was a much better mother the fourth time around. The beach chapter was captivating, Rhett was the same-old loveable bad boy type, and I was excited for Scarlett to start her new life. It was obvious that Ms. Ri...more

this is an alright book. but don't read it looking for the same humor, wit, intelligence, depth or character building as gone with the wind. it's hard to go from a masterpiece of epic proportions to a follow up novel, so let's not compare them. lets just say, if you want to read one person's interpretation of what could have happened, go for it, it is not a deep read. as far as actual writing and storytelling goes, the ending is severely lacking. it seems as if ripley was under a time crunch and...more
