Although basically a light, fun read, this novel was, nevertheless, somewhat more than just a typical thriller. There is a certain "flavor" to the lead character, Alison "Ali" Reynolds, to her family, friends and her home town of Sedona. No longer working as an investigative journalist, Ali has decided to start a blog in which she can detail some of the unhappy events in her life and, hopefully, help others who are going through similar circumstances. In their small town, where everyone seems to...more

I have yet to find a book by J.A. Jance that was not well worth the reading. It is escape fiction, perhaps, but it is good escape fiction, with a generally interesting cast of fully understandable characters involved in a complex plot that gives us understanding of how these people interact with what is going on around them to the extent that we can determine whether we might or would want to act that way, too. Isn‘t that what learning is all about? In addition, I am always eager to see how succ...more

This is the forth of J.A. Jance's Ali Reynolds series. This one was slightly better than the others in this series, but still nothing to write home about. Ali is having her new house remodeled, and her contractor is accused of murdering his wife. In the end, Ali finds the evidence to prove he is not guilty and they all live happily ever after (at least till book 5).
The writing is shallow, the characters flat, the story simplistic, and the coincidences never stop coming.

Of late I've been really souring on the insane overabundance of serial killer novels. They have been so overdone of late that it was hard to trudge through yet another one. Still, Cruel Intent was a pretty easy read and had a lighter tone than some of the others I've read lately. In Cruel Intent, ex TV journalist Ali Reynolds gets involved in a murder case when the contractor working on her case is investigated and later arrested for murder. In the process, she comes across a website devoted to...more
Why J.A. Jance would choose to create a character as ridiculous as Ali Reynolds only she knows!
Ali Reynolds grew up with intelligent parents and she raised an intelligent son yet Ali Reynolds lacks common sense, common reasoning skills, and she’s slow to catch on. Yet, she was a successful journalist. Ali seems to possess what is called all book sense and no common sense.
J. A. Jance had a winner in her J. P. Beaumont character whom I like and always looked forward to the next book.

Cruel Intent by J. A. Jance
Ali Reynolds just wanted to get into her house and make Thanksgiving dinner. Little did she know that a serial killer would thrust his ugly way into her hopes for a pleasant holiday.
This mystery really moved. Jance put the pedal to the metal and never let up. Ali is a likeable heroine who cares about people around her. She is tolerant of others and their differences. Her butler, Leland, provides her with a steady hand when she lets her emotions run away. Her relation...more

This was a nice book. I had read another of the Ali Reynolds' books before. I like J.A. Jance's detective J.P.Beaumont better, but I can understand that an author might like to create other characters for different series. Ali is remodeling a house and somehow there is a team of two videographers filming the action for a tv series. She has a son, Chris, who is planning to marry a lovely young woman who is missing part of an arm and leg due to an accident. Ali has to choose a finalist for a colle...more
Ali Reynolds is rebuilding her life in Sedona surrounded by her parents who still own and operate the SugarLoaf cafe, her son who is in a serious relationship and the butler/assistant that she seems to have inherited. Ali sees dreadful similarity between his situation and the rush to...more
The plot in this book is not particularly complicated--I have been reading some murder mysteries that have woven a fairly complex tale of late,m and this is not in that League. However, there are a number of life issues that come up--how to deal with parents, and in-laws when your kids are getting married. When do you need to be welcoming, when do you need to be civil, and how to have those conversations. And how talking with family can be like a game of telephone, where the message gets distort...more
I liked this book. It's a sort of cozy serial killer thriller. Why cozy? Because all of the sympathetic characters demonstrate that they care about each other. Sedona is a good place where intelligent, capable, caring people work and live out their lives. Sure there's the gossipy manicurist, but the reader does not spend time with her - hears about her from other, good characters. The heroine is quite one and shows it most when she trusts her mother to help out in a difficult situation...and her...more
An easy read. Ali Reynolds is in the process of renovating her new home. Bryan, the contractor is preoccupied and on the phone most of the morning. Later that day, his twin daughters go home from school and find their mother dead on the sun porch. Dave Holden, the local sheriff immediately suspects Bryan. Ali can't believe Bryan could possibly be a murderer but the town seems to suddenly think the worst. Very enjoyable book. I even liked the last thirty pages which were basically an epilogue, but it closed everything off for the reader.
I fell in love with the heroine's mother. She was gutsy and ditzy at the same time. I wish they'd kept in the killer's head when dealing with her at the end. It would have ramped up the suspense a bit. However, in the heroine's mind, you basically knew what was going on.

Audio Book - I found this while I was shopping at Tuesday Morning. I'm always looking for a reasonably priced book that I hope is entertaing to listen to on my daily commute. I wasn't disappointed in this one. I didn't realize that it was the fourth in a series. I didn't really feel like I was missing much by not knowing about the first three books. It kept me engaged and there were times I didn't want my commute to be over so I could keep listening. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. I round...more
Even if, like me, you enjoy spending most waking hours on the Internet, this book is enough to make you want to tear out your modem and drop it in the nearest river.
In Cruel Intent, as in most of her books, J.A. Jance tells a cautionary tale in the course of spinning out a first-class suspense story. In this fourth book of the Ali Reynolds series, the continuing characters are becoming rounder and more clearly defined. Not a bad murder mystery, suspense novel starring Ali Reynolds, the fourth in this series. When the wife of Ali's contractor Bryan Forester is brutally murdered, Ali finds herself believing his innocence (the husband is always the first suspect, right?), which puts her in conflict with both her one-time boyfriend detective and a good deal of the quick-to-judge town. Trying to help Bryan, Ali manages to land herself right at the focal point of a nasty serial murder. With the help of her unflappab...more
This is the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it. I read the book in about a day and a half. I just couldn't put it down. This book is apparently the 4th in a series featuring Ali Reynolds, a television newscaster who becomes involved in solving crimes. Fortunately, I didn't need to read any of the other books to enjoy this one. I really got a kick of Edie Larson, Ali's mother. She's kind of the comic relief in the book. As far as the crime, you get to know right away who...more

But when the savagely murdered body of stay-at-home mom Morgan Forester is found, Ali's contractor Bryan is the prime suspect. Bryan swears he has nothing to do with his wife's murder, so Ali decides to halp clear his name. By logging onto Singleatheart.com a website Morgan frequented she is plagued with a trojan by the cold blooded killer running the site. Ok I am really not good with words to writ...more
I received this book 4 years ago and it has just been sitting in my “to read” pile. While I had certainly heard of J. A. Jance, I had never actually read any of her works until a few weeks ago. This is my second Jance book and it, like the other one I read, hit the spot—sometimes it is just time to read a who-done-it! While it is not “great literature,” it is an engaging, entertaining way to spend some winter hours. The characters are believable and the pacing is good. A serial killer who uses h...more
I had a little trouble getting into this book, but I think that had more to do with my schedule instead of the book. Once I go into the book, I did not want to stop reading. In fact, I was up to 2:00 am reading. I have not read the other Ali Reynolds books, but I definitely will be looking them up. Cruel Intent is a very up to date book with the references to the internet and viruses. At the same time that this is a fiction book it does have an influence on what everyone needs to be aware of saf...more
How do you stop a serial killer who is so computer savvy? He has the perfect setup--his own online dating site, where he collects financial information and infects each subscriber's computer with a worm that gives him access to all their files. When they start asking questions,he kills them and sets up their friends to look like the murderers.
A great plot, and Jance's characters are always so real that you wonder what they're doing once you've completed the book.

THis author is always good. This is the 2nd or 3rd book with this main character.
It was awfull scary to think that someone who knows computers that well could use it for evil intentions. It makes you a little crazy to think that "they" are out there.
The bit about cheating on the internet through the internet is a very sad condition of modern society. If people think they can do so much better, will they ever try harder to communicate with the people that are near?

I have always enjoyed J.A. Jance's books, but much prefer her J.P. Beaumont and Sheriff JoAnna Brady series. This story is about Ali Reynolds, an ex-television journalist who has returned to Sedona, AZ and is in the process of remodeling a house when her contractor, Bryan Forester, is accused of murdering his wife. Ali is the only person who believes that he is innocent. The real calculating killer is using an on-line dating website to lure women into his web. It's a fast read but somewhat predi...more

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Ali Reynolds and her family. Ali is remodeling an historic home in her hometown of Sedona when the wife of her contractor is brutally murdered. The police and most of the citizens of Sedona are convinced that Bryan, the contractor and husband, murdered his wife. Only Ali is determined to prove his innocence. The reader knows the truth from the beginning but the question is will Ali be able to figure it out.
