I saw this book at the same time I saw "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers" and bought both. I enjoyed the movies and figured the books would be insightful.

Plot:
At the end of "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers", Lister, Rimmer, Cat, and Kryten were stuck in a video game--"Better than Life". They realized it was unreality, but as they got what they wanted, they didn't care to go back to the real world. In this installation, Rimmer's fantasy starts to te More...

"We're talking about the trigonomics of four-dimensional space, you simple-minded gimboid, we're not talking about some seedy game of pool in a back street Scouse drinking-pit."

Lister's pool shot has to be one of my favourite scenes in this book, but all of it is top-notch and funny to boot. Arn's mental instability is topped only by the disregard the entire Human race held for the Earth, and the Eurovision and Star Trek references were well appreciated.

Once again Rob Grant and Doug Naylor harvest some of the best moments from their television series and add some new material to produce a very funny book. Playing pool with planets, Lister marooned upon an ice planet with a just a tube of bonjela, a tin of dog food and a pot noodle for food (Which one of them will be last on the menu?) and a planet Earth where time runs backwards all make an appearance from the show. New material includes the human race using one of the planets of the Solar Syst More...

Funny book! Best line (and perfect description of "Cat"):

God, it was cruel to have been born a male, and have a reflection that was also male, forcing him into a platonic relationship with his own image.

A continuation of the first book, this story picks up with our Crew trapped in the addictive game of Better than Life. Very different than the episode of the same name, it becomes a revealing exploration in the psychology of Lister, Rimmer, and Cat. My respect for Lister grows from reading this, as he shows himself to be a very mature person with very real and grounded ideals. Rimmer, on the other hand... well, it's a good thing he is so messed up, or they would have died in that game. Cat. More...

Growing ever more surprised at how much I enjoy these Red Dwarf books. I always thought I would be disappointed as I love the series' so much but I must say I'm convinced.

What the books have essentially done is bound the episodes together and rewritten them in some part but with nothing that doesn't feel true to 'The Dwarf'.

This book contains snippets of the episodes of Better Than Life (much more the concept rather than the episode), Marooned, Future Echoes, Polymorph a More...

I found both Red Dwarf books on audio and just (re)listened to Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and it was a joy to hear Chris Barrie. I know I had just read the book but I had to listen to IWCD before I listened to this second instalment Better Than Life. I'm so glad I did as it set up a good mood that lasted until the end of this book and beyond. I'm still smiling.

I've been in a humorous stories phase lately and this just fed right into it. I would count this as another must rea More...

I have the unabridged version of this read by Chris Barrie (Rimmer) which I have heard a number of times. The story is taken from a single Red Dwarf episode and greatly expanded. This is very enjoyable and thoroughly recommended to any RD fan.

The best way to experience this book is as an audio book read by Cris Barrie (actor who plays Rimmer in the show). He not only narrates well, but is spot-on with his impressions of the different characters.

I highly enjoyed the book, but most of the content here is identical to shows in Series III of the tv show.

This book was difficult to rate. I adore Red Dwarf, but I'd seen basically all these stories as episodes and they are much funnier in that format. So, I like the concept of the book, but it's not nearly as funny in print. I would recommend that anyone interested go watch the show instead!

Loved the first book (Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers), and this is (almost) as funny. If you watched the TV series you'll enjoy this. I actually think I preferred the books, although it helps picturing the actors and their accents etc when reading. Really sarcastic. Great fun.

I'm embarrassed by how much I enjoyed this book. It's goofy, juvenile humor, but also just really funny. Another book where I think you probably need to have seen the show to fully enjoy it.

Love Red Dwarf, and the idea of some Scouser being the last man alive hilarious. So much to love about Red Dwarf, and a must for fans of the programme.

While the first red dwarf goes further to establish character and tone the sequel is far more action packed.

Just like the previous book in the series, Better than life is based loosely on the events of the television show. Better than life has a flowing quality that the TV series and previous book lacked.

The action in this text is gripping while not taking itself too seriously. That’s a quality I enjoy about these books. The characters are well formed and are a pleasure More...

As good as it's prequel. Also recycles lots of jokes from the show, but it was an amazing show!

Very funny and makes the Better Than Life game a lot more detailed than the TV show. I think that parts of this dragged on a bit but overall, well worth the read and well recommended.

A quick read, rather mercifully. I laughed twice, but the rest of the book is basically empty and useless. Much like the first book (Red Dwarf), if you're looking for coherent and purposeful plot, look elsewhere. But the first book was funnier, which made it better.
