The first in the series of Bad Hair Day Mysteries, featuring Marla Shore of Cut N Dye Salon in Florida, I found it quite fun to read. The beginning started off slow, and I was beginning to wonder if I would finish it or not. Many of the characters were introduced quickly and I found myself asking who is this again? (once they were referred to later on) The same thing happedned in her second book, Hair Raiser. I think if I had been consistant in reading the book, (not putting it down for a week a...more
Beauty Salon owner Marla Shore is more than a little upset when one of her customers, Bertha Kravitz, dies after drinking coffee containing poisoned powdered creamer. Not only is she afraid she'll lose her customers, but the police, especially Detective Dalton Vail, seem to think she's the murderer, since she was the only one with Bertha when she died and Marla is the one that gave her the coffee. Marla is afraid that the police will discover that she had more than one reason to kill Bertha and ...more
A quick read book with a decent mystery story line. I'll probably read this authors other books. Its something light to read between heavier readings. A beauty salon owner, Marla, is doing a perm on a regular customer. While waiting for the perm to develop she serves the customer her usual coffee, goes into the back room and while there hears a crash, comes out and sees her client dead. Since the client died while under her care Marla feels the need to find out who done it and why. Of course the...more
Marla, who owns a hair salon, is stunned when one of her customers dies of poisoning after having a cup of coffee in her shop. Vail, a detective suspects her. Marla's past includes a child drowning while in her care and indiscreet photos taken when she was desperate for money. One of her employees, was the murderer.

This was the first book in the Bad Hair Day Series and the editing was very bad in my opinion. I had it on my Kindle and perhaps that is why it was bad, but it detracted from the book for me. I am going to give this author one more chance to see if I like the subject matter. Maybe I just can't relate to a hairdresser.
Marla was kind of a neat character and I am hoping she develops into something more. I just started the 2nd one in the series and so far so good.

I never made it past the first chapter this was so bad. The dialogue was so boring I spent most of that chapter thinking about they left perm solution on the corpse and it was going to burn her hair off.
I liked this book. A mystery, and a quick read. I would read something by this author again.
Totally unrealistic. What self-respecting homicide detective would ask the prime suspect out for a date? There are some amateur detectives that readers actively root for, hoping they don’t get hurt in their quest for Truth, Justice, and The American Way. Then there’s Marla. What a pain in the ass she was. I kept hoping someone would kill her. Another author struck off my reading list.
I enjoyed the mystery in this story... I suspected the killer right from the start, however there were so many twists and turns that I was never quite sure until it was revealed at the end of the book.
Marla was a fun character and I look forward to reading more about her and her many friends. :)

NO stars! Couldn't even finish it!
Book #40 read in 2008
The problem with PtD is that about two seconds after the murderer appears on screen, you know who did it. Marla then spends the entire book trying to catch up, and not always with the best of luck.
Also kind of annoying is Marla's habit of calling everyone "pal." But that might just be me. For the most part a fun read, although I'm fairly certain I liked her later mysteries more.

I liked this book, but I can't say that it is one of the best books that I've ever read. I don't know if I'd take the time to read another book in this series. The book is about a hairdresser who tries to solve the mystery of who murdered one of her clients.
This was a good series opener that I enjoyed. It was especially fun because I was able to determine the identity of the murderer before the sleuth. I hope I am able to read the other books in this series
This series is just good, fun, mysteries. Best to start at the beginning with Permed to Death.
