My Thoughts: FYI, this book contains a few m/m sex scenes. I'm not particularly bothered by them but I realize some readers might be.
I was excited when I got this book because it seemed right up my alley & also had an interesting twist on demon lore. That wasn't what I got..kinda. First, this book seems not to know if it wants to be Urban Fantasy or Erotica. I don't mind sex scenes, even like sex scenes in my UF but only when done right & tastefully. That was not the case. Our heroine Mo...more

I find the first-person girl-demon-hunter genre increasingly baffling. Why is it always in first-person? Why is the romance so formulaic? Why do I keep on reading it? This entry in the genre doesn't really answer any of those questions, but kept me reading it in search of the answer to a new question: “How is this book so fail?”
Several specific sorts of fail aside, it's not a bad book of its sort, if its the sort of thing you like. Androgynously-named Girl is an exorcist in a world where demon p...more

Okay, color me surprised. I read the first two or three chapters of this book months ago, and I was very unimpressed. First-person narration, so popular these days, is a hard sell for me, and the narration in those chapters irritated me. Morgan, the main character, spent too damn much time talking about her clothes, her attitude problem, even her tattoo. I don't need to know what a character's wearing unless it's important to the plot, you know? BDSM outfit for an undercover sting? Okay. Very ti...more

If you are like me, you are easily drawn to any new book(and there are many!) in the dark urban fantasy genre just by the cover and teaser(they all sound very interesting at first glance). Although not every book finds a unique approach/twist or hits the right note(by howling, of course) to satisfy me, this was a good find. Morgan Kingsley is a strong and sexy woman, reminiscent of Rachel Mariana Morgan in the Kim Harrison novels, who has the ability to exorcise demons(slightly different from a...more
I wanted to like this one. I really, really did. A professional exorcist who discovers she's been possessed by a demon of her own for months... a demon that drags her into his war of succession to the throne of Hell... what's not to like, right? Well, I'll tell you what. There seems to be this movement of oversexed, unnecessarily kinky novels in the paranormal genres and I rather wish it would stop. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a sexy book as much as the next person. But riding on the coatta...more

At first I really didn't like this book. It is really graphic with its sex scenes and there were a lot of them before you even really knew the characters in the book. Sometimes I think authors detract from their own lack of skill in writing by writing steamy scenes. I was afraid this was going to be the same. I was wrong I am so glad to say. It had a lot of the "forbidden" in it, presented in a very sexy way. However, I was sucked in with the story and ended up liking it very much. I will defini...more
I checked this book out from the library, and there was a scene, quite early on, that made me distinctly uncomfortable to be holding a many-times-read paperback. Because, essentially, this book is porn. There's nothing wrong with porn, but I prefer not to get mine used.
Morgan Kingsley is the typical urban fantasy romance heroine: she's hot, she's got tattoos, she wears leather, and she is a supernatural savant. In her world, demons can possess humans, whether by invitation or force, and it's Mo...more

THE DEVIL INSIDE really does pull a bait-and-switch on the reader. As the book opens, we meet Morgan Kingsley: kickass heroine extraordinare. She's tough, she's smart, she's a wiseass - readers of paranormals know the drill by now, and she's a winner. And then she realizes that she's hosting a demon, and in a very short space of time the book changes. Morgan loses her support system - and even tough, independent heroines need a support system. Her best friend, her boyfriend, her worldly possessi...more
First in the Morgan Kingsley urban fantasy set in an alternate Philadelphia in a world where demons can legally possess willing hosts but illegal possessions result in exorcism or burning.
The Story
One reason Morgan chose to embrace a career as an exorcist is her terrible fear of being possessed. Helping other people is a minor point for Morgan is no hero. Then after a horrible misadventure in Topeka, reinforced by unexplained attacks at home, Morgan's worst horror is confirmed. At great cost to...more

I started reading Jenna Black with her Faeriewalker series and I have to admit, she does well in both genres, adult and ya. She writes a mean story! This was so interesting. I don't know if the premised had me completely when I read it, but it was intriguing enough for me to pick up this book and start it. Once I started, I couldn't put it down!

Morgan Kingsley is definitely not the strongest female heroine I've come across, but she is one of the most realistic protagonists I've read in this genre. Morgan has her faults: self-centered and trigger happy in situations that we'd all like to believe we would think through before acting out. She's not terribly charismatic to me, but she believes she is to herself, which is a blow. The majority of women do not go on about how badass and good looking they are, but that's just a minor irritatio...more
I started reading a different book on Friday, but after getting 60 pages in, I just had to put it down. I couldn't get into it. So, I went over to my bookshelf to pick out a book that I was sure I would enjoy. And this is the one I picked out. You know what? I wasn't wrong. As soon as I picked it up and started reading, I was hooked.

Not sure what to rate this book. Very different from my normal books. Not a bad story, but will not continue with the series. Read it because it was the BOM of one of my other groups. Had way too much kinky stuff - whips and what not(which I had no idea prior to reading and is something I don't particularly care to have included in the stories I read) and had a guy romance which doesn't particularly appeal to me. So the latest trend seems to be to take creatures which were once only characterize...more

This book had a little of everything – demon ass kicking, betrayal, and possession as well as phone sex, some S & M, and a little man loving sprinkled in. Morgan Kinsley, the reluctant heroine of this story, is a modern day exorcist who has very personal reasons to hate both the legal and illegal forms of demon possession that occurs in her world. Unfortunately she gets mixed-up in a battle between different factions in the demon world and is forced to choose a side. Her decisions and her po...more
Morgan Kingsley lives in a world where people willingly volunteer to become demon hosts. The demons take complete control of their host's body giving it extra strength & healing powers but leaving the host a silent passenger in their body for the rest of their lives. Understandably Morgan doesn't understand why anyone would volunteer for that position - in fact the idea of becoming a host is her worst nightmare! She became an exorcist to remove illegal demons who attach themselves to unwilli...more
I picked up The Devil Inside in the middle of my time in the Seton Hill University Writing Popular Fiction program. I walked into one the near by Borders and there it was on the new release mass market paperback display. And what heterosexual male wouldn't stop at a book cover of redhead in black leather pants and a tattoo on her back. Certainly not me. I read the back cover and said, "Woot!" to myself when I read it was about demons and the protagonist was an exorcist. I'm a horror guy too, how...more
"Your methods could use some work, but your heart is in the right place," is Morgan Kinsley is described. In a world where demons live in this world, called the Mortal Realm, she's an exorcist. The incorporeal demons can only live in this realm if they inhabit the body of a human host. They must be willingly offer their bodies. Morgan exorcises rogue demons, those who force themselves on unwilling humans. She hates demons, the reason unfolds as the story continues.

I just finished the 3rd book so I'm going to try to sort out all of books two and three and just talk about the first one. At the start of the book when she was talking about herself I started to think maybe I wouldn't like her very much, I thought she was going to be to uncaring about everyone but herself and I also didn't like that she flaunted how 'sexy' she was. I grew to like her though and finished the book, but as much as I loved it, there were so many things that bothered me about her. L...more
I'm rather torn on this book.
On one hand, the world building is excellent. The premise of demon possessions as a matter of routine, regulated by the government was very intriguing. The extra strength provided opens many possibilities, including extra strong policemen, firemen, etc. The idea that someone could be voluntarily possessed by a demon and be almost revered by segments of the populace for their sacrifice of their body for the greater good was fascinating, as was the psychology behind th...more

I ended up liking this book but it was kinda touch and go at the beginning. Not because the story was iffy or the writing was bad or anything. Rather because I got really tired of having how "tough" Morgan was shoved down my throat every other page. Honestly, you can tell me a character is a tough as nails, but until I see it ... well, those are only words. Plus, having a couple of extra piercings and a tattoo does not make one bad ass. However, Jenna Black dropped the over-telling about halfway...more
Slightly trashy but still fun fantasy. The plot takes place in a world where demons are an accepted fact of life and demonic possession is in many cases a legal and mutually agreed upon fact of life. The plot centers around an abrasive exorcist with a strong dislike for the parasitic relationship demons have with humans, whose job is to get rid of demons that hitch a ride on a human illegally and without consent, or who break the law. Naturally she ends up as the illegal host for an extremely po...more
I honestly didn't think I would like this one. But after reading good reviews from a few people whose opinion I trust I decided to pick it up. I'm glad I did!
The plot moved at a good pace and the characters were dynamic. I liked the different take on Demons. The story arc worked out well with enough conclusion to not be a cliffhanger, but enough left hanging to set me up to want the next book.

I can't make up my mind whether to give this book two, two and a half, or three stars... It wasn't a great book, it was an OK read. It won't blow you away. I was able to put it down a few times and not be in a hurry to start reading again, which says alot for/to me. I think the concept could be cool, but I was disappointed with how Morgan was portrayed, or rather, portrayed herself. I am a let the actions speak type of reader, I don't need to hear that she is a mean, selfish bitch all the time {...more

Jenna Black is your typical writer. Which means she's an "experience junkie." She got her BA in physical anthropology and French from Duke University.
Once upon a time, she dreamed she would be the next Jane Goodall, camping in the bush making fabulous discoveries about primate behavior. Then, during her senior year at Duke, she did some actual research in the field and made this shocking discovery...more
