Pure letdown. This book started okay, then got completely done in by the author trying to state everything he seemed to know about boring military garble. The names of things didn't matter, the story about how he got this wealth of knowledge would have been, maybe....no it wouldn't have. Somehow this average Joe hero seemed to learn how to do almost everything overnight. There was no indication of this vast wealth of knowledge in the first book. Making the character some sort of military command...more
I enjoyed this book just as much as I enjoyed the first one. I think combining a very first person narrative with a this genre really works, for me anyway.
I think that the original premise was a great idea, and I did adore the first book and getting to know the characters and getting to know how each character became part of the main story was what still leaves Book One lingering as my favourite of the two.
However, I do think Bournes writing style has shied away from the 'Dear Diary' style that...more

If you're a fan of weapons, gore and frights this book will appeal to you. It's obvious the author really knows war, weaponry and combat like the back of his hand. This makes the book believable, even though it's about zombies. There are some genuinely rather terrifying moments, moments that will make you sad, parts that will have you questioning what you would do in the same situation.

"Beyond Exile" immediately picks up right after "Day By Day Armageddon" left off, with our protagonist still kicking after the climactic confrontation with the roving raider band at the end of the previous book. Our nameless officer is licking his wounds, still leading his little band of survivors, and still making his journal entries.

The second book in J.L. Bourne's series is a lot less annoying and more clean, technically speaking, than its predecessor (far fewer misspellings). However, it pretty much abandons the diary conceit, becoming a basic first-person narrative.
Beyond Exile abruptly shifts gears in the second half, where unseen benefactors start (literally) dropping power-ups from the sky. This is also when, in a seeming contradiction, the book really starts to drag.

In den Hotel...more
Really enjoyed the first half of the book. The main character is very knowledgeable. I like how believeable the story is. At one point he is alone, on the run from zombies for many days and it is pretty intense. Just envisioning him coming upon a boarded house, not knowing if human enemies or zombies are inside, was scary. The author takes you in depth on the discovery of the house. Makes you think twice before reading it at night! After awhile, the book kinda turned on me. I think partly becaus...more
This is the sequel to Day by Day Armageddon by the same author. It continues where the first book left off at and is done in the same style, the main character’s journal entries. With this being the second book by this author, I expected more from him in way of his writing. There are still the grammatical errors and lack of contractions within the story that make it feel and read choppy and at times disjointed.
The story is a work of fiction, however, when any author and one who is allegedly an...more

Hmmmmm. Did I enjoy this book as much as it’s predecessor, Day By Day Armageddon? Short answer: No. Long answer: also no. Shall I elaborate?
From a technical standpoint you have to concede that Beyond Exile is Day By Day’s superior. Technically. A lot of the “flaws” of the first book are absent here. The problem is, as you may have guessed by my quote marks. Is that I never thought of Day By Day’s flaws as, well, flaws. Did the plot tend to meand...more

This is a reasonably good read for fans of the zombie/horror genre. Bourne is able to sustain enough suspense and tension in the moment-to-moment action to keep you turning the pages. Unfortunately, the 2nd installment in the Day by Day Armageddon series begins to feel a bit stale and the characters less compelling. The limited perspective of the narrative (again written as a series of brief journal entries by the protagonist) does not seem to lend itself well to character development for this a...more
J. L. Bourne has returned with his second entry in the Day by Day Armageddon series. Beyond Exile picks up right where book one ends. If you’ve not read the first one, and you are a fan of zombie fiction, I just want to know what rock you’ve been under. Stop reading this and get his first book: Day by Day Armageddon. No, really. Go ahead…I’ll wait.

ay by Day Armageddon was one of the first books I read when I became interested in zombie literature, to go hand in hand with my fascination with zombie movies, almost exactly four years ago. As is the case with many people who enjoyed its personal approach to the apocalypse as told by an active officer in the military, I have waited all this time for the long hoped for sequel. Since J.L. Bourne is himself an active member of the military, my guess is that he was only able to write bits and piec...more

Day by Day Armageddon, Beyond Excile by J. L. Bourne
When I read Bourne's first book I was surprised to discover there is a Zombie story genre. This is the 2nd Zombie story in his series. It, too, seems to attract a loyal following. Once again the protagonist is an active duty military officer in a nation that is combating an unknown disease. The disease turns out to be Zombieism (?) and the bulk of the world is infected. This continuing story centers on the survival of the few remaining uninfect...more

This sequal to ‘Day by Day Armageddon’ did NOT disappoint this fan. I was so delighted to find out that the author is continuing this story. I can’t wait to find out what will happen in the next book. What is the REAL story behind the character Saien? Is he someone the lead character can really trust even though things just don’t add up when it comes to his story. [BTW, is it just me or did anyone else out there automatically start thinking about the dreamy looking guy (Naveen Andrews, who playe...more
When I saw that this was a zombie book I thought it was going to be similar to the last couple of zombie books that I read. Kind of a light fun beach read. But this one is very different.
Now we all know the old saying do not judge a book by its cover.Well that is so true. I like the cover art on the book but if I saw it at the store I would not pick it up to look at because I would think the book was for young adults.

If you like your zombies sweet, awkward in a dorky way with a little paranormal love going on, you will be very disappointed. If however, you love your zombies to be mean, hungry, disgusting with a lot of war like images then you will love this book. This book has a lot of military imagery and it has to do with the main character who is, in fact a military marine man. It is he who has helped the remaining people to survive and his mission is to find as many survivors as he can.

Beyond Exile is the second Day by Day Armageddon novel, I admit I haven't read the first but have heard amazing things about it and can't wait to pick it up. I highly recommend reading the first novel before this one- I felt as if I was missing some tidbits of the storyline. The book was brilliant and fun, regardless. Now, just like in the first novel, the main character is an active duty military marine officer up against an unknown (zombie) disease- and just about the entire nation is infected...more
Okay first off, I just received this book yesterday morning and have not finished it as of yet. I can say I do know for a fact that I will enjoy this one as much as I did the first one. It took a matter of seconds for me to be pulled right back into the story. The author gives you a quick refresher on what happened in the first book right at the beginning to get you going.
The second book starts off right where the first one ended. Absolutely perfect!

J.L. Bourne has done it again. The sequel to Day by Day Armageddon picks up with our hero in an underground military base when a distress call from an army squad trapped near the city leads him back into the fray. Bourne does an excellent job of amping up the difficulty for his protagonist in this one, forcing him out of the comfort of a base and again exploring the thrill of survival out in the zombie wasteland. In the process, Bourne introduces stronger zombies in larger numbers, some demented...more

Zombie Apocalypse fans, military fiction
After a great first book, J.L Bourne follows up with a worthy sequel. The characters are consistent, the action set-pieces are exciting, and the conspiracy-laden story continues to evolve.
I felt the first book ended too abruptly. This book picks up right from the end of the first book, dealing with the aftermath of an attack. The story constantly changes...just when you think you know how things are going to play out, Bourne shakes things up, putting our hero in a different, more dangerous, situ...more

Day by Day is simply the best Zombie book I have read. All the negative reviews that accuse this book of lack of character development and straying from the Novel Format are completely missing the point of this book. It’s a “Day by Day” account of one guys journey through surviving the Zombie outbreak. Unlike other novels that start out as a journal then morph the reader into the scene to over hear conversations and thoughts of the characters, this book stays in true Journal format – so there ar...more
The same problems from the first book, haunted the second book. The main character lacks personality and so do his friends. The lack of interest in his gf still gives me the impression that she's depending on him for survival rather than love interest. If so, why so coy?
I enjoyed his trek back to Hotel 23 and the arab was actually interesting. I'd like to learn more about him. I enjoyed waking up from the crash with zombies strapped in beside him. I wish he hadn't gone with the idiotic military...more

A bit more polished than the first one, though I still don't understand why the main character insists on walking right up to a wandering zombie and blasting it with a firearm, when he knows for certain that the report of the gun will attract many more zombies. Why doesn't he learn? He knows that remaining silent is important, he knows that he can handle a single roamer without a firearm, he knows that he's putting himself in danger by continuing to dispatch the odd wanderer with a firearm, and...more
Our hero is back, with more responsibility than ever.
THE FUCK. The first book in this series was definitely badass; while it seemed male-centric, the protagonist was fuckin' SMART, and I respected that. NOW? This book? Buddy's transformed from clever survivalist with a military background to total military robot. Really, he doesn't even seem human anymore. He's completely detached from everything going on around him; even though he's got a hot survivor woman who wants a piece, she's relegated t...more

[I've upgraded this book from a 3 to a 4 star after some consideration. One of the things that really make this book stand out are the details. Details Details Details. This guy is always thinking about everything, where his next meal will come from, where the next toilet paper supply will come from, water, fuel, name it and he has a plan or is thinking about one. Back in the world before the zombies happened he must have been borderline survivalist NRA member of the year. In the zombie infested...more
This is the second book in the Day by Day Armeggedon series and, while I liked this book, I didn't like it as much as the first. I think, while the first book is about a guy who happens to have the skills of a marine surviving a zombie apocalypse, the second book gets too technical. The character gets recomissioned into the Marines to save the civilians hiding in a bunker with him. After this a lot of the book talks about different weapons and military devices in a technical way that sometimes p...more
