At first I thought this little book was a little too light, a little too once-overed. By following the footnotes, it seemed, all the best insights were by Brian Boyd (author of the gargantuan, 2 volume life of Nabokov) so why bother, thought I.

But once I really started to pay attention, I found this to be untrue, that Wyllie brought something new into this oft-trod (silly adjective) arena; in particular, the chapters about VN's later life (from Lolita to death). It became less Boydy and more in...more
