I won this book on Goodreads 1st reads. I didn't give it 5 stars because I agree with what someone else said that alot of this is common sense. Although, it would be great for late teens, early twenty's type woman that are still maybe learning about makeup, hair, and fashion. Some of the clothes tips to me are geared toward this age group, or at least one's that are fit and trim. This book is pretty much exactly what you'd expect. It's full of obvious advice catering to upper-middle to upper class thin whiteys. The tailor made advice even extends to her giving tips for short legged girls and girls with curly hair, and no tips for anyone of other leg height or hair type. After reading through the reviews, I decided I needed to get a fair review out there. Would you go to a hair salon that specifically caters to women who have curly hair when you have stick straight hair that doesn't hold curl? (the answer is no, you would not) Then why would you pick up this book, with a girl who is famous for being famous and knows exactly how to dress to her tastes and style? Would you go to a hair salon that specifically caters to women who have curly hair when you have stick straight hair that doesn't hold curl? (the answer is no, you would not) Then why would you pick up this book, with a girl who is famous for being famous and knows exactly how to dress to her tastes and style? While I believe that it would be cool for a Style book to come out where it crosses race, body types and so on, it's impossible. You would have to take into consideration not only specific races (not to mention us girls who are mixed), but you'd also have to include ALL body types (and not just the "normal" ones of hourglass, triangle and stick but ALL the combinations too) along with specific styles (jeans and a tee? Elegant? Heels all day, everyday? Tomboy? Boho? Alternative?) AND where you live. That's impossible. If you don't like Lauren Conrad and how she dresses, leave this book to those of us who do.

STYLE could be considered "common sense" but ladies... Look at pictures of you from when you were in 8th grade. TELL ME you had impeccable style. This, is the intended audience. Young Adults. I learned a lot from this book. Conrad includes the staples of what SHOULD be in every woman's closet (everything from a LBD to a well fitted heavy coat) and how to accessorize them to make them look like different outfits! She keeps everything to basics EVEN THOUGH the pictures show various things. Unfortunately, most people have the in ability to look at a picture of something (a dress, for example) and see what they like or do not like about it. No, you don't need a bright teal maxi dress with a flower print like Conrad wears on page 15 but you can see what kind of maxi dresses YOU like and look good in. The woman cannot buy and put together outfits for you. She is simply giving your mind the tools it needs to be able to put together a good, beautiful outfit that makes you feel good about yourself. Conrad also includes the best outfit to wear while on a plane (no, sweats are not the staple), different ways to wear your LBD, simple ways to style your hair and makeup and how to dress for your job interviews.

If you like the California style and want to learn the basics AND YOU HAVE AN IMAGINATION, you will like this book. You don't need to buy $700 dresses in order to be able to "get" this book, trust me. So the "spoiled rich girl" comments can take a hike.(less)

She dresses for the red carpet and paparazzi, not trips to the supermarket or visiting the library. She proudly offers that in five years of her reality TV show, she never once repeated an outfit. She talks about shopping trips that last for days, and going to the store two hours before flying to Vegas for her birthday celebration and buying a ridiculously overpriced dress that she'd only wear once, but that made her feel fabulous that night and was thus worth the splurge. She makes practical suggestions, like purchasing a $70 leather jacket to give it a trial run before investing in an expensive one to see if you'll really like it and wear it (because she's so frugal). Unfortunately, 90% of her readers are going to consider the $70 jacket plenty expensive on it's own. And we do not spend 40 hours per week shopping and planning our wardrobe and hair. We also do not have multiple stylists employed to help us. Really, this book is pretty much worthless for advice for anyone other than celebrities (who have their own personal shoppers and stylists anyway), but mildly entertaining and made me feel better about myself, like I have balance in my life. I love clothes and shopping and like to dress well, but it takes an appropriate backseat to other things in my life, such as being a mother and reading stuff.

Have you ever found a dress that you liked, so you took it to the tailor and paid to have him painstakingly recreate the pattern and sew you another one in a different pattern and fabric so that you could wear it again another time, but not have to look like you were wearing the same thing you wore three months prior? If yes, then this book if you for you. If you've ever worn the same pair of shoes or jeans twice within a 7 day period, then this book is NOT for you.

There. I just saved you a bunch of time and money.(less)

Although Conrad tries to hide the fact that she is a spoiled rich girl, it is very apparent anyway. I guess I was more annoyed by her attempts to appear normal (she claims to be so embarrassed about how much she spent on a dress, that she will not disclose how much it cost) than if she had just been up front about her fortunate background and expensive lifestyle. She also admitted that she had a team of people helping her clean out her closet including (if I remember correctly) FOUR stylists. If I am supposed to be listening to her advice on style, why does she need to hire FOUR stylists to help her with her clothes? They should be the ones writing a book!

The other thing that bothered me was that the advice in Conrad's book is suited to herself. For example, she says that she considers "kitten heels" to be the "mullet" of shoes and goes on (and on) about her love of super-high stilettos. Well, Conrad is relatively short, so I can understand her preference for high heels. However, kitten heels can be much more flattering than, say, a flip-flop and may be very well suited for someone who is tall and wants to wear a heel without towering over everyone. The hairstyles she suggests are all those worn by herself--her signature loose waves and her "goddess braid." Her styling tips, again, are suited to people with hair like hers. For example, she advises girls to towel dry vigorously... If curly-haired girls did that, they would end up with a frizzy mess! She also very strongly advocates for skinny jeans, which are really only flattering for certain body types, especially worn without boots. I could go on and on!

Like I said, there was some interesting information in the book. I like knowing that the most important lengths for necklaces are 12", 14" and 18". However, I had a hard time getting past the feeling that Conrad is spoiled, untutored in style (relying on her stylists), insincere, and stuck on herself. (less)

I'm probably the last person to care SO much about fashion but the lying-around Lauren Conrad book was just begging to be read and well, you know, I couldn't really say no to an offer like that. I took it as a green light to up my knowledge; it should help me with my kind of job.

this book was everything i wished derek blasberg's trainwreck "classy" would have been. LC gives tips on looking classy (down to how much cleavage is acceptable- i think it was 3/4 of an inch but didn't bother to remember because i don't have any cleavage) without being a jerk, proving that she (unlike my mortal enemy blasberg) actually IS classy.

Surprisingly I really enjoyed this book. I have a secret addiction to style shows and on occassion even attempt to ramp up my own wardrobe. First off, I must admit that I have no clue who Lauren Conrad is. A brief glance at her Wikipedia page gives the impression she's used her famous-for-what? reality star status to amass a miniature empire of fashion lines and book deals. I've always loved Lauren Conrad's style and this book is a really good reference to have with plenty of advice and top tips without trying to remove your own unique style.

Ehh, this book was okay. I've watched LC on Laguana Beach and The Hills and love her. But her book honestly was just alright. This is definitely not the usual kind of book I review. I jumped at the chance to get a copy though because I love doing makeup and hair and I was curious to see what Lauren had to say about that. I also love Lauren Conrad and her style is amazing (in my opinion) and I wanted to see what tips and tricks she could give me.

First: the style. I enjoyed learning about the staple pieces everyone should have and also how to hem jeans (which I didn't know how to do properly). I also love Lauren Conrad and her style is amazing (in my opinion) and I wanted to see what tips and tricks she could give me.

First: the style. I enjoyed learning about the staple pieces everyone should have and also how to hem jeans (which I didn't know how to do properly). I found organizing my closet was a bit helpful too. Other than that the other style chapters didn't really interest me. She talks about shopping and wearing vintage, getting the best t-shirt for you, dressing proportionately, and much more. It's not that they didn't inform me, the definitely did, I just didn't find that I would be using the information anytime soon.

Next: the makeup. I always loved Lauren's eyeliner, but I didn't know that she never wears eyeshadow. Did you? Even so, her makeup artist tells the reader the best day and nighttime looks, easy ways to do the smoky eye, tips on applying concealer, bronzer, and blush, and of course the eyeliner. I found all of these sections very interesting and I am definitely going to be trying out all of the looks.

Last: the hair. I was disappointed with this section for a few reasons. First, I found the instructions hard to follow. I wanted to try out the guide for making the perfect waves and the simple up do. Both instructions confused me though and I feel like I'd be better off looking on YouTube for tutorials. Even so, the tips for keeping one's hair healthy were very helpful and I definitely learned a few things.

There were other sections like organizing your closet and I found these helpful too. Although this book had very simple information, I still was able to learn from it. If you are an avid reader of style magazines, I would just borrow this book from the library because most of this can be found in magazines. It is a nice compilation of information though.

Overall I found this book to be a great starter guide for women. As for women who are more experienced in style, makeup, and hair it is still a great read and you are bound to find some new tips and information.(less)

Style, by Lauren Conrad is a non fiction book in which she expresses her perspective on many topics of personal style. These include Building a Wardrobe, Mastering your Closet, How to Shop and many more.

I personally love Lauren Conrad's style which allows me to fully enjoy this book but it does not only focus on her style but developing your own personal style. She starts with baby steps that make it almost impossible to fail.

I'm a closet fashionista, no pun intended. My interest in fashion lead me to buy Lauren Conrad's "Style" on a recent trip to Barnes & Noble. While I know virtually nothing about this Hollywood starlet, I was attracted to "Style" on the recommendation of others as well as the nice layout of the book itself. It was a short and enjoyable read, with only a few cons to prevent a full five-star treatment.

The book is divided into various chapters, where Conrad addresses a wide variety of topics. The book encompasses not only clothing, but overall 'style', with chapters on make-up, closet organization, and how to photograph well. The vast majority of the tips were helpful. For example, Conrad mentioned a shopping test, where one steps away from the mirror and when they step back, note what is the first they notice about themself. This test came in handy during my last shopping excursion! The overall messages of the chapters are positive and full of sound advice on how to dress one's body type, focus on buying versatile pieces, keep one's closet clean, etc.

The drawbacks to this book were minor. The make-up section is short and almost unnecessary, as it only offers only how-tos on Lauren Conrad's usual look. Of course, this book is by Lauren Conrad, but considering the rest of the book deals with personal style (and not Lauren's), the chapter seems out of place. Sometimes the details about Conrad's personal life create a disconnect with the reader. How often she shops, how much she spends, where she travels: While they're important details, they paint a picture of a charmed life that make her advice seem impractical. Plus, a personal disclaimer - I can't say I'm a fan of Conrad's signature mini-skirts/dresses. While this may not offend other readers, and it factored little into the actual content of the book, I think it is important to note this fact for those of like mind when it comes to modesty.

Nonetheless, "Style" is entertaining to read and a helpful companion to anyone looking to discover their own 'look' and develop their wardrobe. I would recommend to anyone who has an interest in fashion.(less)

This book is amazing. It can sound kind of stupid considering your taking advice from a TV star who has plenty of money to spend on anything, but it was actually benifical. I actually really liked this book, it's different than other fashion books. Conrad didn't try to sound glamorous and didn't have that I am above you connotation, too many of these books have. Her writing was relatable, humorous and had a real voice. The advice given was very handy and I learned a thing or two.

I'm not super knowledgeable about make-up and fashion, but I do love watching videos and reading books from time to time.
