Some novels are character driven, others plot driven. Wisdom Hunter is unabashedly agenda driven.
Agenda. In Wisdom Hunter, Mr. Arthur pounces on and wrestles to the ground a modern American evangelistic model that replaces the joy and compassion of Christ-centered, Biblically focused Christianity with suffocating legalism and contrived tradition. Do you struggle with legalism, that dominating desire to do all things correctly and to condemn those who do not conform to your rigid view of personal conduct?
It is a lifestyle that lacks mercy. If that description fits you, this is the book for you.
In Wisdom Hunter, the main character, Jason Faircloth, is a legalistic Pastor with a tight reign on his congregstion and his family. Reading his prayers, one would think God is his servant. These are the character traits of More...

When I read the introduction I was under the impression that there was something controversial about the story, but I didn't find anything out of the ordinary at all. The story is about a right-wing pastor who is rather dictatorial in his beliefs: my way or the highway type. He loses his family and suddenly realizes that perhaps he has been wrong about how God works. He quits his church and goes on an odyssey to find his grandchild. The journey takes him across the States and to the Mediter

I've read so many books lately that they've all seemed to kind of run into one. Shortly after reading one I loose some of the intricacies of the story. This book, was definitely not one of those. I was completely blown away by this story. I wish I would've heard about this one years ago, when it originally came out. But I'm glad that I was given the chance to read it, even if it was 18 years late.

Pastor Jason Faircloth thought he had God all figured out. He knew the rules, and he made sure his congregation knew them too. There was no excuse for failure. He expected the same at home, but his teenage daughter could not abide by such standards and ran away. Jason prays faithfully that God will send his daughter home, and he is certain that God will grant his request in time.

I found this to be a very enjoyable, uplifting and thought-provoking book. Jason was once a prominent pastor who led a very large congregation, but then difficulty comes into his life and he learns that his Christianity was not all it was cracked up to be. So he resigns and heads off to find himself. Never abandoning Christianity he learns more about God and being a Christian while he is out trying to find his granddaughter.
I enjoyed reading of Jason's travels and the adventures a More...

“For years he had distanced himself from everyone, allowing himself to be idolized. He'd let himself be put on his pedestal alone. Now he would have to suffer alone”
When Pastor Jason Faircloth experiences a family tragedy that rocks his faith to the core, he finds himself in unknown territory as he tries to put the pieces of his shattered life back together. Affectionately called “The General” by his congregation of over 2,000, the one man who was always in control More...

I was very much loathing Jason, the main character, through the first half of the book. He was the ultimate in controlling men in every role he played, pastor, father, and husband!!
The life changing experiences he went through went were refreshing and wonderful! As he found himself and how God plays a role in life he becomes a kind and giving man. Really did end up liking him and the book.

After reading this story many years ago, I still remember the church this man found in Norway. I loved the way it was described and would like to attend a church that had that one's type of mission statment.

While some of the writing seemed a little cheesy, the content and subject matter were so important to think through. He made some excellent points that I will go back over time and again...

I loved this writer and found this story very inspiring. The story was heartbreaking off the bat and you find yourself rooting and wishing for the character.

This is a great story that is not very well-written. The author is obviously passionate about getting to the true heart of Christianity, and this work of fiction is an exercise in that. Trimming the text of some redundant narration and freshening up some unnatural-sounding dialogue would knock this up a star. Recommended for those who grew up in the church and are struggling with the (sadly) prevalent hypocrisy and judgmentalism therein.

I just didn't like it as much this time. I have really grown over the last several years since reading this and so it wasn't such a "shocking" revelation this time. Still worth reading, but just once.
