The Last River Child by Lori Ann Bloomfield is going to be one of my favorites this year and will stay on my shelf as a reread sometime in the future. This debut novel of Lori's is terrific and one that I found I really didn't want to put down until I finished it. It's a shorter book at 280 pages making it one of those I actually wished had been longer as when I did turn that last page I was sad that the story was over.

Walvern, a small Ontario town has a legend that has existed fo More...

I really liked this one. Left me feeling happy to have read it and that doesn't happen enough lately. Too often this type of book is like watching an inevitable train wreck- your gut gets all twisted in knots from the relentless tragedy. Here there was tragedy but it didn't beat you down- the overall feeling was uplifting. The writing flowed nicely with great observations on nature. Peg was such a great character. I do enjoy WWI era stories. This one gave some sense of the actual war throug More...

I have had this book on my shelves for some time and was glad that I finally got around to reading it. The story unfolded much differently than I had expected, but in a good way. By the way it started, I thought the story was going to involve some paranormal activity or mystery that needed to be solved; which ended up not being the case.

It was a well-paced story that held my attention until the last page. I like how Peg matured throughout the book and even More...

This is a wonderful, delightful novel. The prose style isn't revolutionary or even particularly ornate (don't expect to have your socks blown off), but Lori Ann Bloomfield doesn't need revolutionary or ornate prose to grab hold of you. She just needs good, solid, old-fashioned storytelling, and she excels at this. The plotting is spot-on, the characters develop at almost exactly the right pace, the details are vivid, the stakes are genuine. It is a simple but a fantastic novel.

This was a wonderful book, I really enjoyed reading it! This was a Historical Fiction book taking place in the late 1800's - early 1900's. It follows the lives of two girls and their family, through joys and struggles (and there are many struggles).
In a way this story reminds me of "The Salem Witch Trials" how finger-pointing, rumors, and old superstitions can get carried away and ruin peoples lives!
I loved the character development. I loved and felt very attached to the 2 g More...

I thought the book was very uplifting and exciting to the point where I wanted to read more once finished. I was taken into a time where life was simpler where a real village superstitious mentality existed. Each character had their own personalities and the settings were very realistic to the point where you got drawn into the story itself.

A definite must read and I am looking forward to future novels.

I won this book from the Goodreads competitions and I am so glad that I did. I thought this book was so excellent that not only did I put my thesis writing on hold to finish it, but I had to immediately buy another copy to send to a friend. My copy needs to stay in my possession so that I can read it again in the future. The book is just a very loving and peaceful read and you fall in love with the main character and wish her all the best.

I was so happy to win this book free from the Goodreads First Reads contest. This book is one of my favourites. I started this book and finished it within 4 hours. I absolutely loved Peg's character. I love to see Canadian writers actually have their stories set in Canada. I fell in love with the story and the author should be proud it's a magnificent first book. I couldn't get through it fast enough . I hope to read more from this author.
