This morning I finished up Lilian Jackson Braun’s The Cat Who Tailed a Thief. This is the 19th book in the series, originally published in 1997; I’ve been working my way through them at the rate of about two to three a year. I was a bit surprised when I looked up this series to find out that this is the 19th book I’ve read so far…tells me my many years of reading are really starting to pile up :)

Another of my favorites in the series, because it introduces another of my favorite characters, the weatherman, Wetherby Goode. As always, Qwill has moved residence, and is staying in indian village. It means he has convenient access to Polly. I liked the collecting of the Short and Tall tales, and I liked the mystery of Danielle and her 'cousin' Carter Lee James. Mosca is a funny inclusion as well. I love the lighthearted approach to mystery here, and the personal interest Qwill had in the case...more
As with most Lilian Jackson Braun's cat-who books, this book doesn't disappoint. It is funny, however, how much skullduggery goes on in such a small town in the upper midwest "forty miles for nowhere." There are two murders in this story and lots of fun cat names courtesy of a contest that the main character Qwilleran puts in the local paper he writes for. Qwilleran is the local handsome bachelor millionaire, who's cats - Koko and Yum Yum (Siamese) - help him with his amateur sleuthing...more
You know there is not much more to be said about this series. Ms. Braun keeps on and on probably at the direction of her publishers. My thought is that she is ready to quit, but can't say no. This story is interrupted by several "tall and short tales" from Pickax old timers. I think these served as filler and added to the number of words required to get it published. Again, another character, although not particularly sympathis, was killed off. Qwill and Koko come through again a...more
The Cat Who series is always good for relaxing, and I've been using this one between bursts of work and to chill on all of the snowdays we've been having. As usual, it's a fun read, but I was surprised by how much material Braun added to the story that went out of the way of soft, happy material. Between divorce, marriage for money, murder, cheating, and other scandals, this book was chock-full of drama. Of course, it was all delivered subtly and under a fuzz of catfur, but what do you really ex...more
It was cute, as books like these often are. Although the plot was relatively predictable as well as the motives involved. It was quick and light summer faire. However, I did learn something. . . It appears that these books are set in the UP of Michigan (Braun refers directly to pasties, down below is Detroit, and they are in an old mining area. . . Sounds like the UP to me!) It was like visiting home.
I was a huge fan of mystery novels back in middle school, and devoured many of The Cat Who... series, probably because I was initially attracted to their brightly coloured covers (I remember some of these looking practically neon). Reading one of these books years later, I can understand why I was so into them. They're quite easy to read, for one thing, and the cats are somewhat cute, even if I'm not an animal person at all. The plot of this one was fairly basic. In fact, there almost seemed to ...more
I had read this particular series of books years ago and although i am sure i had read this one in the past because it was familiar it still kept me guessing. The series centers around a wealthy man who owns two very intuitive cats who help him solve town mysteries. This was a light enjoyable read and I will definetly read more of the series again.
When I first started listening to these "The Cat Who. . ." books, I thought they were so weird, but strangely enough, they held my attention and I kept getting them. Even stranger now, is I have really come to like them. The characters are so quirky, but they have really grown on me. This is my favorite so far. It was a great little mystery.
A really pleasant listen. I have found this series an undemanding read/listen. Just what I need when I am looking for something to listen to as I tackle a project I would otherwise find rather too boring to continue with.
Don't let this put you off. The stories are quite charming and the characters pleasant company. Nothing too dreadful happens.

I enjoyed the first couple of this series that I read. I'm not sure if this one was not as good as the previous ones I read, or whether it is just that the plots are very similar, and the characters have no dimensions to them, so that I didn't really care about them. I will probably read a couple more, but am taking a break from them for the moment.
I've enjoyed listening to a couple of books in this series. I imagine that Pickaxe is supposed to be somewhere in Minnesota, or maybe Wisconsin, and sometimes the dialogue of the locals is a little too folksy. But I put up with it because the storyline was fun and not too involved. Great for listening while driving or walking.
Braun has written a great series of "cat who" books. This is one of them. Things are missing in the town of Pickax and finally the gbridge cluilb's money is stolen. As ususal there are several themes going at the same time.
A good read.

The new banker in town is murdered in Chicago and his young wife and her cousin are trying to develop a street of classic houses and charging the residents big bucks. Qwill has bought a condo at Indian Village to live in for the winter, as the barn is too big to heat effectively. His next door neighbour is Weatherby Goode, the local radio station's weather man. Qwill is very suspicious about Danielle, the young widow. When her cousin suddenly marries Polly's sister-in-law, the whole town won...more
This is a fairly typical entry in "The Cat Who..." series. Lots of storylines about the life and times of the folks who live in the cold North with Mr. Q and his cats. In the center, of coure, there's a mystery and it's not too hard to figure out whodunnit.
Fast read, fairly entertaining. Great for brain candy.

Recommends it for:
Cat people, murder mystery readers who don't like violence
I am listening to this on audio book. It's on tape which is a little less clear to listen to. I don't have a CD player in my car. So far I am enjoying it - I am about 1 and a half tapes in. Koko and YumYum are entertaining - for cats....
Update:
I finished this book on my way home from work last night. It really is the perfect type of book to listen to in the car. The cast of characters is well written and interesting and the plot is just suspenseful enough to make you want to keep lis...more

These are charming and fun mysteries. I went through a binge of everything in the series when I was younger, but haven't touched them since. I remember really enjoying them, though, and both liking the main character and the twists to the stories.
A string of petty crime occurs around Pick-Ax and then a prominent townsperson is murdered Down Below. Only Koko would think the two cases are interrelated! Another fun, quick addition to the series.
If you are all wondering why I have been reading so many Cat Who Mystries, is because I can't remember the ones I have read in past years. I think I have read most of them in the nineties. They are a lot of fun.
I love these books--the main character is funny and really understands how cats think. I also enjoy these stories because they are mysteries, my favorite genre.
The mystery was pretty transparent & was not as exciting as some of her previous books. A lot of the book had filler color stories from Moose County. But I did enjoy reading about some of the back stories anyway.

A fun easy read. This was my first "Cat Who" book. I'm looking forward to reading more when I need a relaxing treat. Descriptions of the cats are a treasure!
This story was a bit twisted; and one that I wasn't quite sure how it was going to end; Lillian Jackson Braun kept me guessing throughout this story.
I remember this book being fairly cute, especially where cats are concerned, but not too much else. I think I read this is middle school or early high school.
I forgot how much I love this series. The stories take place in a small town with the main character having two helpful siamese cats.

i read this during my reading period when I don't bring a book. It's okay to fix up some boredom but not exciting really.
I always enjoy books in this series. Kind of folksy - no real bad guys. Well sort of.
Not my favorite of this series, but, as always, an enjoyable, comfortable read.
murder was SO preventable but came anyway
I read all of the "cat who" books. They were great fun.

Lilian Jackson Braun was an American writer. She is well-known for her light-hearted series of The Cat Who... mystery novels. The Cat Who books center around the life of former newspaper reporter James Qwilleran, and his two Siamese cats, KoKo and Yum Yum in the fictitious small town of Pickax located in Moose County, "400 miles north of everywhere." Although never formally stated in the...more
