Very Victorian story poem about a little girl named Nell (popular name for girls in those years?) and what happens to her when her Grandfather dies. She is left alone with her dog Tray (popular name for dogs in those years?), in the care of the landlady, who turns out to be heartless and cruel, starving both girl and dog.

Landlady pockets the money poor Grandpa left for Nell's keep, then beats Tray with a broom to drive him away from the house. Tray limps off with a broken leg, but remembers all
