Moments in our lives. A woman's eye view...

Rate this book
Moments in Our Lives contains 65 short poems - little vignettes of everything that women experience during their lives. It's chronological, with a picture opposite each poem about moments in all our lives, from a baby's birth to the wisdom of age and the everyday memories in between. Florence Henderson said, "Kathy Brodsky's poems are a delight. They are full of humor, compassion, and insight into women's joy, frustration, and sadness." This is a very nice "pick up, put down" type of book, a wonderful gift for any woman in your life.

Kathy Brodsky is a psychotherapist. Who dispenses advice is iambic pentameter. Not quite, but close enough. I had occasion to read her book, which is a really delightful read. I say this without having too much interest in poetry. I know I'm missing out on the whole scene. I do have all the classic poets, but, except for Elizabeth Barrett Browning, I'm not really interested. I have to force myself.

Kathy's poetry is very simple. But powerful because she speaks in a very straightforward manner. She's not esoteric. She's a poet. And she knows it. Yet, I say her work is powerful because she really is teaching lessons to the reader, about how to live in a crazy world of mundane monotony. But she shows that even the mundane can bring joy.

She has an index to cover the issue you want to think about, and you read the poem, and reflect on it. Some of the stories relate to her own life, raising children, divorce, old age, losing a loved one. There's something in it for everyone.

I think every one should buy this book. If just to reflect upon one's life, to realize that there is no experience that any of us has that isn't experienced by someone else. And as a psychotherapist, Ms. Brodsky knows it. I think her poetry can save people a lot of visits to a shrink.
