As always, I LOVE an Amish book! And, like Winter's Awakening(click to see my review!), book 1 in the Seasons of Sugarcreek series, book 2- Spring's Renewal, did NOT disappoint!
This story captured me, I feel, even more than Josh and Gretta's story in Winter's Awakening. In this book, through Clara and Tim's story, a message of God's love for us-even with imperfections-is POWERFUL! He really spoke to me through this book. Not only does Shelley Shepard Gray's story speak of this mess...more

Spring's Renewal by Shelley Shepard Gray is the second book in the Seasons of Sugarcreek series. Clara has resigned herself to living a quiet life in her Amish community. She finds fulfillment in her teaching job, but taking care of her demanding mother exhausts her strength. After being badly scarred by a fire as a child, Clara has largely been ignored by the men of Sugarcreek, an attitude her mother only reinforces by telling her that without physical beauty, she'll never catch a husband. Tim ...more
"Spring’s Renewal" by Shelley Shepard Gray is a happy Christian romance story of how Cara, an Amish school teacher who is badly scarred from a fire sees her dreams come true. When Tim meets Cara, he realizes he does not love his hometown sweetheart as much as he thought he did, but falls for Cara. Although there are some obstacles to a life together, they find a way to work things out. This is a light, heartwarming read involving balancing one’s responsibilities with the pursuit of ...more
In this novel, Shelly Gray explores the feelings the protagonist has in coping in the Amish community. Badly scared as a child in a fire, Clara has resigned herself to caring for her demanding mother, earning a living teaching school, and being alone and lonely. She has a rebellious streak that she is sometimes unable to rein in that causes her trouble with the elders of the community. A subplot concerning the trials of a young English woman round out the story. If you haven’t read the first...more
This is a series set in Ohio and centered on Amish life. This first novel concerns the schoolteacher, Clara Slabaugh, a young woman physically scarred since childhood. The lesson is that beauty is not always found on the outside, but can be hidden under layers. Clara has a demanding mother, but still she remains kind and optimistic. Lilly has just suffered a miscarriage from an unwanted pregnancy and wants to hide from the world. Each person carries unwanted burdens, but with God's assistan...more
**This is the 2nd book in the Seasons of Sugarcreek Series. If you haven't read the first book, you may not want to read this review**

I have really enjoyed the books so far in the Seasons of Sugarcreek Series. I really enjoyed the character Clara in this story because she had a truly beautiful spirit. She had suffered a tragedy when she was younger and had some very bad burns. She felt that no man would ever want her because of them. She resigned herself to be the best teacher she could be and love did find her. I like this series because so far Shelley Shephard Gray has shown us 2 characters that had some physical issues ...more
An interesting story line with a good ending. Looking forward to the next book although I'm surprised that it does not involve the summer season.
My one major complaint (that has two parts) - with this book - involves one of the secondary characters. First off, the character Ruby is called Ruby Lynn for the first half or so of the book when she is mentioned. However, as soon as she becomes an active character, she is called Ruby Lee. Secondly, every bit of dialogue and facial expressi...more

"Clara is a well-crafted and relatable character. You'll soon be as partial to Clara as the author, especially as she develops and comes out of her shell." - Romantic Times

Jumping in in the middle of another series, but it didn't make any difference. This is another amish book. I enjoy these for their simplicity and there's always some sort of romance and finding oneself mixed in with the story line.
The writing is well done and I will give this book as a gift for sure but for me the charcters were too young.
-About an Amish girl who has burn scars finding someone who looks at her insides instead of just the outside.
This was a very good book. You will just love it if you love to read Amish books! =)
Woman with scars on face is teacher looking for love. Many editing mistakes.
Loved the continuing story.

Spring's Renewal is waaaay better than the first book, Winter's Awakening! I read it through in one day. I'm really looking forward to Autumn's Promise which will once again feature "Englischer" Lilly Allen. I think this is the first series in a while that I've really enjoyed that has featured the same main character throughout while also introducing a new main character in each book! If you like Amish fiction (I really don't care for it much anymore but I liked this book) pick this se...more
Although I expected the "Amish-ness" of the story, it did get a bit too preachy in the last third of the book for my taste. I suppose it was a decent enough story (loney girl meets guy, guy 'attached' to another, girl falls for guy, guy falls for girl, break-up scene between guy and first girl, and then the happily ever after), but I was gagging toward the end.
Delightful and uplifting!
Enjoyable read! Shelley is a great story teller and her books are alway a good read.
I loved Clara. I think there is much of her inside all of us and we'd be oh so much more at ease with ourselves if we only took the time to listen. Thank you Shelley for more time with the Graber and Allen families. I can't wait to start "Autumn's Promise."

Librarian Note: AKA Shelley Gray (Western Romance).
I live in southern Ohio with my husband, two teenagers, and two dogs. My days are filled with busy activities like most any other mom and housewife. But I also love to write books.
