This book was part of my new year's resolution to generally become the most perfect person who ever lived. I made it through the first eight chapters, doing all the recommended visualization exercises and affirmations. I was feeling pretty good about myself and the book until somewhere in Chapter 9, when I hit a wall.

In Chapter 9, we learn that in addition to several daily meditation exercises and verbally approving of ourselves literally hundreds of times a day, we're also supp...more

What I like about You Can Heal Your Life is that the reader can look up a specific illness to find out typically related emotional issues. This gives them a starting point in healing their life. For me, however, these connections were too vague and the affirmations didn't work for me. I was a novice at the time, and had trouble understanding the full impact. It was because of my lack of understanding, though, that I went in search of a simpler, more personalize method, and thus created my own. T...more

This is a classic, and can be very useful as long as one doesn't get too literal about these things. I find that sometimes people in the "new age" community use this kind of information to judge and define rather than to support themselves or others with possible interpretations.

I've been using this book off and on for years, but had never read the whole thing, until recently. I was impressed with the easy readability. The language is so simple and clear. I like the frequent examples Hay provides to illustrate her concepts. The part I was taken with was the little chapter, "Daily Work," in which she describes a longer term use of affirmations around her landlord and moving. I have mixed feelings about using her "list." On the one hand it seems too si...more

I loved the quotes Ms. Hay provides. Such as:

"In the infinity of life where I am,
all is perfect, whole, and complete.
I recognize my body as a good friend.
Each cell in my body has Divine Intelligence.
I listen to what it tells me, and know that
its advice is valid. I am always safe, and
Divinely protected and guided. I choose to
be healthy and free. All is well in my
world."

Even better...in Chapter 15 she again i...more

Dear Oprah,
I typically appreciate your literary leadership. "The Secret" and I have had some good times together. I even enjoyed A Million Little Pieces despite the lies. However, you have dropped the ball on this one. This chick is crazy! She has some good ideas, sort of, but wow this one was hokey hokey hokey. I forced myself to read it, and I wish I hadn't. Feel free to make it up to me by sending me a new car.

Okay, yes, cheesy title. I like her own story even more than her book. She has a very encouraging story. I am a confessed recent reader of a few "self-help" books (since motherhood, interesting:) and hers was good, but her own story of life was more interesting to me.

This book is a good reference guide to help me process what is going on in my thought habits that is creating undesirable results to my physical body. It also helped open my awareness to an attitude of self love. I still refer to it on a regular basis.

The premise is that every single ailment or physical problem you have is a result of an emotional problem. Cool, actually. Every sickness your mom, friend, mailman has, you can see what kind of emotional baggage they're dealing with (and your own, but that's not quite so fun). It's interesting how it's dead on every time. The problem is that Hay's proposed cure (simple positive affirmations) doesn't seem so effective. It's great to know that your headache is caused from fear, but then what?...more

I listened to this book as an audiobook of CDs. I only made it through the first disc before deciding it was not for me. At first it seemed to make some sense, that we poison ourselves with toxic thoughts, but then the author (who as also the narrator, I believe) started going off with platitudes, too many of which I took issue with. For example, she implied that studying history was irrelevant and that we should instead teach our children about how our minds works, psychologically speaking. ...more

I have grown to appreciate Louise Hay very much. I don't agree with everything that she promotes. We have very different understandings about many aspects of spiritual growth and spiritual power. Still, I am drawn to her story and her message. I am practicing many of her teachings, especially where affirmations are concerned. I highly recommend the DVD version of You Can Heal Your Life. Again, I don't agree with every word, but I do see the spiritual world differently as a result of what I ...more

Louise Hay told a generation of dying gay men that it was their fault they were dying because they didn't love themselves enough. Her basic premise is that if you just love yourself enough, you'll never get sick. A stupid premise, to be sure. The hiv+ community of the mid-80s, looking for any hope to hang onto, desperately embraced this book and its author, and she returned their devotion with the disrespect any common carnival con artist shows their mark. This book is indefensible and she shou...more

This was a fabulous book that really explores the way we think. All the principles are really simple, but there's so much good information it's hard to absorb all of it just one time through.

Now that I've read it from cover to cover, I'm going to try to read one chapter a week like she suggests and do all the exercises. This is particularly suited for me at this time in my life as I still have this pesky shoulder pain from the car accident....I can't believe I didn't read it sooner!...more

Author Louise L. Hay did not grow up with a "charmed" life. She had a lot to overcome, and she did. She is the author of an international best seller, "You Can Heal Your Life" and the founder of the publishing company, Hay House. Her publishing company handles the writing lives of many people you know including Suze Orman, Deepak Chopra, and Wayne Dyer, just to name a few.

I strongly recommend this book even though it was first written in 1984. Her health book is ...more

This is a book that I keep right next to my bed and refer to often, particularly for the chart contained at the back. However, it is also filled with wonderful affirmations, and just reading a small portion of it, regardless of what point in the book it is, reminds one that 'What We Think About and Thank About We Bring About.' It's a great way to get back on top of being positive in the face of challenges.

This is also an example of the importance of being alert whie reading and tak...more

Some people thing self help books are a lot of bunk. Each person will take away what works for them. I think Louise Hay gives some very practical information on how to move forward with your life when you are stuck. Things happen to all of us but it's how you deal with it that makes your life what it is. I would reccomend this book to anyone who is going through some difficult times.

I checked this one out from the library and had it too long, so I had to return it. I am honestly not sure whether I liked it or not! It focused on finding and accepting your true self, which I think is a great quest. But she carried it so far that I had trouble finishing the book. There are lots of exercises in it which I think were helpful, but I didn't like the way that she blamed every single bad thing that you ever experience into something you chose. I simply don't agree with that. It soun...more

I would have NEVER have read this book without the high recommendation from a friend and an interview of Louise Hay on Oprah. I bought it and then 3 more books Hay wrote. She is an inspiration and such a positive person I have learned a lot and hope to take more of her suggestions and make them a part of my daily life.
