Abuse comes in many forms. Sometimes its results can be seen by others visually but not always. Why does the victim stay or keep returning to the abuser? Love is often a factor but then so is fear. Time investment as well. It's not easy to start over from the "known" even though the "known" is dangerous and unhealthy. The book started out slowly, but once the author started describing the abuse, it really drew me in and I was honestly riveted. The book is very short though, and I'm sure there were many more experiences she could have shared. She only writes of two accounts of abuse, and while she does describe how difficult it was to leave the relationship, I didn't feel like she fully discussed how much love she had for this man, and how much that may have played in her staying.
