he first time I picked up this book, I was a newbie knitter. I flipped through it and thought, "Nnnnh. No patterns. Pretty pictures." And then I set it back on the shelf. Fast-forward three years. NOW, as a self-admitted fiber addict, I looked at -- and read -- this book with a new eye. I loved the vintage knitting pictures, adored the essays, and truly enjoyed the whole package. If you love yarn and knitting, you'll love this book. It weds intelligent, emotional writing about knitting with ...more

This is a rare book, a coffee table book devoted to the art found in knitted items, items by fiber artists, knitting advertising through the decades, and images of beautiful yarns. That alone would have been sufficient, but in addition are the stories from and about the people connected to all this, the history, the anecdotes, and even the silliness. I wish I could find more books like this, not necessarily knitting books like this, just any type.

This was a great book on the ART of knitting. And yes it is an art, not a craft, a hobby or something that just little old ladies in rocking chairs do. Knitting is something that can be as simple as a garter stitch scarf or as complex as a lace or cable shawl or afghan.

This book is comprised of short essays from those who have knitted and one or two from those who don't.

No there are no patterns but it is a lovely book nonetheless.

Great coffee table for a knitting fanatic. . . Lots of great one-page essays from classic and contemporary designers. I learned a lot about yarn and the history of yarn crafts and got a kick out of the old advertisements.

A little bit light. Its for knitters but maybe not so much for the technical, more for those who love knitting for the social and spiritual aspects.

Mostly made up of short, anecdotal-type short stories. It was sweet. I mostly enjoyed looking at the old-school pictures.
