The Cowboy and the Black-Eyed Pea
Farethee Well is a woman of strong mind and bodacious body. But when suitors come to ask for her hand in marriage, can she tell a real cowboy from a fake? "Johnston's clever parody of The Princess and the Pea is rich with the language and details of the Wild West . . . a great choice for read-aloud".-- Booklist. Full color.

It is very frustrating to come across a wonderful adaptation of a fairy tale and then be forced to rate the book with only three stars, due to a (for me at least) glaring and problematic omission. I'm going to give Johnston the benefit of the doubt and assume he didn't realize that Andersen wrote the original. I love the P&P story and had always assumed it was 'traditional' (anonymous and iconographic). I adore this version, with the strong female lead and the updated setting. I do wonder though if her new husband is actually capable of helping her manage the spread. Maybe he can be a house-husband and do the cooking & cleaning & child-care.
Hilarious retelling of the princess and the pea but with a enterprising young woman who uses a pea to determine who is the real cowboy!

These Texas fractured fairy tales don't end. This one was great. I love some of the little jokes that children might not get. But it's enjoyable for all ages and will be perfect for the Book Time. Poor cowboy--I felt bad for him!
