This was a dumb book. The setting made no sense--they were supposed to be in the 26th century with 18th century technology, but that disjunction was never even hinted at. The characters weren't developed enough to even be caricatures and the book wasn't decent enough to have an ending. Quite literally, the author thought, "hmmm, vampires are cool and pirates are cool and 'vampirates' is witty!" And then he attempted the bare minimum needed to write a book that could be titled Vampi More...

I picked this book up to read for the afterschool Book club. I needed a book about pirates and found this one on the shelves. Like Hunger Games, the cover was really holding me up, but I went onward and really liked it. The book is about a set of misfit twins that never seemed to fit in in their small town. Thier father is the Lighthouse keeper and dies suddenly, leaving the twins, Grace and Connor orphaned. The two take their father's boat out to escape foreclosure and the orphange, to sail dow More...

I love vampires. I love pirates. What's better than either one? BOTH!

I loved this first book: the story of a brother and sister, Connor and Grace Tempest, who face the death of their father, overcome the psychopaths that are their townsmen, and then seek adventure on the open sea, where they are separated due to a storm. Each knows the other is alive, but how will they find each other again? How will Connor cope? And how will Grace survive the odd ways of the vampirate ship? More...

Let it be stated for the record that this was purchased for me as a joke. I expected it to be bad. I went into it knowing it was going to be bad. What I didn't know was that it was so much worse than bad, I could never have adequately prepared myself.

First off, it's set in the future. This way, we can talk all about modern things, while still entertaining the thought that pirates still sail the seas in oldie-timey ships, fighting with cutlasses and other oldie-timey things while no More...

Grace and Connor Tempest become orphans when their father - the rather eccentric lighthouse keeper who teaches them a shanty about Vampirates - dies. Under threat of being taken in by the local banker, the twins run away from home on their father's boat. When a storm sweeps in the boat is capsized and the twins are separated. Connor joins a pirate ship, and soon begins learning the ropes and making friends with other pirates, while Grace ends up on an altogether stranger ship. Mysteries are unco More...

First of all, before i get to the point of the story, i only just wanted to say that it was a very good book to read; the action in the sword fights(hell, yeah, some pushy fights!), humor(i enjoy humor), and kind of got to me with a funny, twisted and different feeling than any other book had.

Both twins Conner and Grace Tempest's dad dies suddenly, after being the lighthouse manager for some years. Probably since Conner and Grace were born, i assume. Deciding to leave Cresent Moonba More...

If you like pirates and vampires, you're in! There were so many things that I liked about this book. I love books about pirates, and my friend recommended this book to me, and I'm so glad I read it. My favorite character was either Grace or the Vampirate Captain. Grace was so demanding, she was so curious and would risk her own neck to find out the secrets of the Vampirate ship. I liked the Captain because he was AWESOME! He was so calm at frightening times, but could stil More...

If you're looking for an adventure story with an interesting twist, try this new exciting series. Although it has many features of a typical high sea adventure, this series is actually set in the future (2505) and the kind of piracy that exits is unlike any you may have read about. Good and notorious pirates abound, but there are is a new mysterious breed of pirates - those who seek More...

I picked up this book because the title had appealed to me, and when I began reading it I found it very interesting and original.

The writing is not proffesional, however it is not child-quality, so it's basicly in the middle. To those people who only want to read books that have professional-like writing style, don't bother picking this book up unless you're open-minded and willing to change your mind throughout the book.

The plot is very interesting, or atleast it was for More...

Vampirates by Justin Somper

This is the story of a set of 14 year old twins; Conner and Grace Tempest who live happily with their father, the caretaker of a lighthouse on the coast of Australia in the year 2505. Everything changes when their father dies and leaves the twins penniless and headed for an orphanage. Then Conner and Grace decide to take their father’s ship out on the open seas and head off to seek their fortunes. Not long after they are at sea they encounter a terrible More...

"If Pirates are bad, and vampires are worse, then I pray that as long as I be, that though I sing of Vampirates, I never one shall see."

That's a verse from a sea shanty often sung in Vampirates. The premise is pretty obvious, right? It's pirates, who are also vampires! How cool is that! Sadly, my own review might read something like:

"If stories of pirates are good, and stories of vampires are better, then though I read the Vampirates, I pray you never do." More...

What’s meaner than a pirate? A vampirate, of course. Set in the twenty-sixth century off the coast of Australia’s Crescent Moon Bay, this is the story of fourteen-year-old twins Connor and Grace Tempest. When their lighthouse keeper father dies, leaving them penniless and alone, the twins take to sea. But before they can begin a new life, a ferocious storm sinks their boat and separates them—perhaps forever. Connor is plucked from the sea by a pirate ship and the athletic youngster makes fa More...

Twins Connor and Grace never dreamed that there was any truth to the Vampirate shanty their father sang to them before he died, but that was before the two were shipwrecked and separated from each other. For Connor, who is taken aboard a pirate ship, there's the chance to learn to sword fight, but for Grace, aboard a mysterious ship of vampire pirates, the danger is great. The twins want more than anything to find each other, but their time is limited and they're an ocean apart.

I would have given this a 3.5 instead of 3 stars if Goodreads had let me and if really it were worth my time to sit here and agonize over such things. Am I going to read the next book? Yeah, I am. Is this the second coming of HP, or even SP? No.

Here's a book where the concept alone was worth my good humor. For this Somper gets my hat tip, and I started this story with quite a lot of goodwill stored up. My chief complaints: much is made of how smart Grace is, but she does preci More...

Well, I have finished this book months ago, but now I search on Goodreads to review it. First, I choose a book for its cover and its content outside. I must say I'm impressed on the cover and its content. Siblings, get lost, vampires and pirates, fighting and blood, etc. There are a lot of books with the same contents about vampire and pirates, but some of those became famous, but some none. The different is really clearly. This book was not famous. I didn't say that it was bad. It just fine.... More...

Twins Connor and Grace both end up on separate pirate ships after their father dies and leaves the two destitute and parentless. Grace is on the fabled Vampirate ship, a cursed vessel piloted by the damned, while Connor is on your more typical pirate ship. The twins are trying desperately to find one another.

Vampirates is competently written, though rather lackluster overall. It's a stock entry in the young reader/YA genre and doesn't break any new ground. The characters are wooden More...

The first installment in the Vampirates series was completely enjoyable. Vampires and Pirates are two of my favorite things, so putting them together was pure genius. It was a quick read that completely captured my attention. I loved the original storyline, and the shanty is definitely catchy. It has been floating around in my head for days now!

I have just found a new-to-me favorite series and author and likely the narrator, too. I had so much fun listening to this first in the VAMPIRATES series and cannot wait to listen to the next in the series, TIDE OF TERROR, I hope it's next up on Recorded Books wishlist.
This is the perfect book to listen to for anyone, even though it's supposed to be a YA paranormal.

I'm really not sure how to rate this book. It was uniformly awful, but highly enjoyable because of it. So long as you read it aloud with a bunch of snarky friends, it's a fantastic way to pass the time. Friendly, law-abiding pirates who don't want to hurt anyone? Pacifistic vampires who also don't want to hurt anyone? Angsty teens? Ninjas in vases (who don't manage to hurt anyone)? You'll hurt yourself laughing.

I thought this was quite a fun, easy read! I loved the cast of colorful characters and the intriguing concept, and I really liked how so many of the characters were friendly and nice to our heroes. I will definitely be reading more of this series.

There were a few minor things I wasn't crazy about. I would have liked to learn more about Grace and Connor's world, to get a better idea of what it was like, what "technology" was available, etc. And, maybe it was just me, but it More...

Demons of the Ocean, by Justin Somper, is the first book of the Vampirates series. It is about two twins, Connor and Grace, meeting pirates of the ocean. They got separated after a boat wreck, and Conor ended up in a pirate's ship but Grace got ended up in a vampire pirate ship. They struggle to survive, and to find each other back.

Totul previzibil. Twins Connor and Grace's dad die and they run from town on his boat. They wreck in the ocean and get separated. Grace gets picked up by the vampirate ship and connor gets picked up by the diablo.

This may be closer to one star, but it's a slight step above the one star series I have.

The characters and situations are all OK, but forced. The dumbest thing is that their strange father continually "comforted" them when young with an old sea chanty about how Vampirates are dangerous. Most of the adults are flat caricatures.

There are some creative plot elements--the tension between "old school" pirates and new Pirate Academy graduates, the set- More...

Yep, you've guessed it. The above shanty excerpt is what I've had swimming around in my head for the last week or so, ever since I finished Demons of the Ocean. This book made me consider if I actually love to read. It was THAT bad. I admit that I don't like surface-level, mind-numbing, this-is-dumb-but-who-cares? books anyway (besides Nick Hornby), but this read is so ridiculously stupid that I feel like I may have gotten less intelligent by reading it.

There is at least one semi-good thing that came out of this experience, I suppose: it gave me hope that I too can get my garbage published someday!
