Ogromnie podobał mi się prosty, trochę chłopski, gawędziarski styl i humor. I found this book extremely interesting, both because I'm studying Chinese and I'm a translator. I read Changes in Spanish because I'm not able to read a book in Chinese yet. However, I was able to understand certain structures that in Spanish were not natural, thanks to my knowledge of how the Chinese language works. Anyway, this has little to do with the book and more with my obsession with grammar and vocabulary.

Charming little book. If you're working your way through the "What is Communism?" series, I don't know how you'll like it - but I'm not, so I thought this was pretty neat. Lovely to have a slices-of-life look at what (a vague attempt at) communism was like for the average person.

I find it strange that the book is a part of "What is communism" series. Although its majorly Mo Yan"s autobiographical account, there are a few interesting comments on life in China in general and the changes that happened over a period of time. There is so little 'what is communism' part in this, though.

A slender novella, presented as the author's memoir. Beautifully written and at times very funny. The reader has to be well-versed in Chinese history to understand the context for the small, detailed snapshots and local episodes described here. Mo Yan is currently being severely criticized for exactly this, by Perry Link and others; the debate is interesting, of course, and it's getting pretty heated, so now I'm at risk of being called a reactionary but what the hell, I enjoyed the book.

Changes. How much can things change in time? This novel is the most personal tale of Mo Yan: his own life. Many of us have never heard of him until he won the Nobel Prize. With this book, the reader is transported to many of the key moments of his life. A sincere confession of how everything has been changing in his and his friends' life since childhood.

First book by Mo Yan I have read and I still don't know much about him. This short story doesn't tell much about the author, doesn't reveal much about China... The most remerkable fact I have noticed is that both Mo and his friend considered marriage as business deal. Pretty sad, isn't it?

Es el primer libro que leo del autor y creo que fue una buena elección. Es una pequeña novela autobiográfica que nos da breves pautas de cómo surgieron las ideas para algunas de sus otras obras. En particular, quisiera leer "Sorgo Rojo".

Sinceramente esperava muito melhor de um premio nobel. Mostra um lado intimista da china comunista de modo eficaz e original mas peca por falta de ambicao. Um livro mais parecido a uma conversa de cafe de um academico bebedo altamente eloquente.

Get a glimpse of how life is like in the Communist world. Mo Yan must possess a very good sense of humor. Some parts of this semi-autobiographical novella made me crack up real hard.

Perhaps not the best pick for my first Mo Yan novel. I dig his sense of humour, but even for me a little too much navel gazing. And I wasn't impressed with the translation.

In verhouding tot "kikkers" is "Veranderinge" een literair dessertje. Niettemin een boeiend stukje literatuur.

A memoir of high quality and important book for understanding contemporary China.
