Last year, I reviewed the first in the Save the Cat! series by Blake Snyder. This time I’m reviewing the third and last book in the series called Save the Cat! Strikes Back. (I’ll explain why I didn’t buy the second one in a bit.)
The series was recommended by the fabulous author and writing instructor, Les Edgerton.
Years ago I took a screenwriting class, not because I wanted to write for Hollywood, but because I could see that the pace and structure of books was becoming more “movie-like.” I wan...more

Another great book in the SAVE THE CAT! series. This one builds on the first, so there is overlap, especially in the earlier chapters. For this book, Blake Snyder draws on his experiences teaching the principles he laid out in the first SAVE THE CAT! book across the country, and the world for that matter. Much more of this book is only applicable to screenwriters, since he discusses the mechanics of the movie business and how to get scripts before producers, etc. As a novelist, this is interesti...more
If you’re a natural plotter or you’re determined to convert into one, I can’t see much of anything in this book that won’t delight you. Even as a pantser, I’m an enthusiastic advocate of Blake Snyder's beat sheet. Knowing how stories should be structured isn’t going to turn me into a plotter. Writing is a journey of discovery for me and that keeps it fun and interesting. If I knew every twist and turn ahead of time, I'd lose interest. That's just how I'm made. I've generally got a fairly decent...more
Completing the trifecta of the Save the Cat! books, this edition is not just a rehash of the previous two. It adds depth and expands on the concepts introduced, but it also adds more material, more creative juju, and more how-to-do-it-right instructions. It helped me understand some concepts I was still a little fuzzy on after several years of studying and practicing the craft of screenwriting. Highly recommended, along with the first two. They're all extremely valuable on an individual level an...more
What a great book! A fitting tribute and legacy to Blake Snyder, from everything I've been able to learn about the man.
The first book in the series demystified the screenwriting process (or at least attempted so to do), but this book, third and -- sadly -- last by Snyder, is much more than that. It's so darn cheerful! And uplifting. And encouraging. As I finished each chapter, I felt almost compelled to write. And, as I was reading it just before going to bed, it was responsible for more than a...more

Most writers I talk to refer to the first book, but this one not only has all the relevant content of the first, but expands it in extremely helpful ways, showing the writer how to practically transfer the beat sheet into a story board. If you want one book on structure, this is it. If you want two, get the first book as well. ;)
This book is not as helpful to novelists as the first two, as about half the book focuses on career-related advice specifically for screenwriters. However, it includes some good stuff, especially about the third act of the story, and is worth seeking out if either of the other two Cat books resonated with you.

In his 20-year career as a screenwriter and producer, Blake Snyder has sold dozens of scripts, including co-writing Blank Check, which became a hit for Disney, and Nuclear Family for Steven Spielberg. His book, Save the Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need, was published in May, 2005, and is now in its eleventh printing. It has prompted "standing room only" appearances by Blake in...more
