Zimbabwe is in a state of crisis. Once an African success story, the country has slipped into a downward spiral and is fast becoming a threat both to political and economic stability in the region. Led by president Robert Mugabe since its independence in 1980, the most recent decade has been traumatic for Zimbabwe. Its annual inflation rate is the worlds highest and its life expectancies are among the worlds lowest, mostly because of poor governance and economic mismanagement. Socio-economic recovery is estimated to be ten years awayat the very least.

"Zimbabwe: Picking Up the Pieces" chronicles the steps that led to the downturn of the Zimbabwean state and economy and assesses what can be done to resuscitate the once-thriving society. Experts from and on the region explore the country's options on key governance issues, from strengthening institutions to boosting the tourism industry to mobilizing donor country assistance. This collection offers a unique glimpse into a fragile state and the severe costs Zimbabweans have endured and will endure for its reversal.
